Wednesday (1/9/2010) Surprisingly by 6am the following morning the port was still again as we boarded our ferry to Split. After a snooze we pulled in to a pretty port town. We stored our luggage and bought bus tickets for the afternoon to Plitvice leaving us a few hours to explore Split. Starving first stop was coffee and pastries (our second worst addiction to ice cream!). We battled the tour groups through yet another old town. We passed through the Silver gate to the Peristal (central court) and the grand Cathedral Sv Duje. We climbed to the top of bell tower for view of the port, old town and distant countryside. We climbed back down continuing through the vestibule into and back along the promenade to the new town for some shopping at summer sales. Jez ... read more

Both have been the victims and agents of ethnic cleansing not only during the Second World War (Croatian Fascists, the Ustaše; but more recently during the bloody disintegration of Yugoslavia of which atrocities were committed by both sides). They are different to each other although ethnically the same: Croats are Roman Catholic and use the Latin writ... read more

Our last days in Turkey roar up on us, like a Turkish minibus driver, and we fly back to Istanbul from Cappadocia. We never really had a plan on how to get from Turkey to Croatia, and Bernard’s options came down to a 2 hour flight, or a 36 hour train ride in a second hand Turkish train, now run by the Bulgarians. Despite the close contest, the expensive air option gets the green light, so we manage a few more days in Istanbul, curiously named “European Cultural capital 2010”. Turkey has been incredibly engaging. We cannot begin to suggest that we understand this complex country at all, but many things have proved fascinating: 1. This is a big and proud country with feverish national pride. Flags are everywhere, on buildings, on cars, on factories ... read more

We arrived in Zagreb in the rain but it cleared up pretty much as soon as we got there. We went on a walking tour which took us from the cathedral, through the old town gate to Gornji grad (the upper town) where we saw the colourful roof of St Mark's church and stood by Lotrščak Tower where you can see over much of the newer part of the city. We got some very nice bread from a bakery for lunch, which we were just finishing as the rain started again!... read more

Geo: 45.8069, 15.9614Four years ago, I had plans to visit Plitvice National Parks, plans that never materialized largely due a lack of funds. That trip involved 99 days of travel and over a dozen countries, so there simply wasn't the money to spend a night in one of the park's hotels. The only alternative affordable accommodations were in a nearby town, and when I tried to book one of them on-line, the person I dealt with wasn't able to confirm if it was a place within walking distance of the park. That was the end of that idea! Also during that trip, I never made it to Hvar island, something I also wanted to rectify this time around. I ended up cutting two days off this summer's voyage to Europe, so a choice needed to be ... read more

Pipaya checking in from Zagreb as the starting point for ˝Off to the Balkans˝ - this time, with Pippa present in spirit :( There were no flight attendant-ejecting issues, and though I did not have all the ingredients for Pippa's concoction for a restful sleep on the flight, I made due by compensating with upping the dosage of wine. However, the remaining leg of the trip was a bit of a process - mainly due to my penny-pinching. Somehow, while booking, spending 9+ hrs at Frankfurt airport for the subsequent connection to Zagreb didn't seem like such a bad idea. How bad could it be - I LOVE airports. It's a feast of sights of people dressed in their national garbs and sounds of people conversing in all different languages. Most importantly, there's an excitement in ... read more

I think what attracts me to these crazy trips is the element of survival. I made it to my sister’s wedding - the mission; now the trick is getting back unscathed. Along the way there are complexities to test those survival instincts. All sounds a bit dramatic I suppose, but that is how it feels. Today’s complexities have to do with how far to travel and how to deal with money and gas. Today was a trip covering three countries. Heading west out of Bulgaria, into and across Serbia and then into Croatia to its most western part, the city of Zagreb. A lesson in this kind of travel is have more Euros. Before I left home and I was sifting through my large bag of foreign currency and coins (don’t ask me why we keep ... read more

I arrived in Zagreb in the afternoon, and took a walk through the city on my way to the hostel. My friend, Robert, had told me that I would see many similarities between Zagreb and Vienna. Both cities were developed by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and their architecture was similar. I first encountered the main train station, which was at the south end of a long square. Across the street from the train station was a statue of a man on horseback. Manicured lawns with geometrically arranged flowers filled the space between the statue and the next building. Old row houses lined the sides of the lawn. As I continued toward the hostel I passed a park and botanical garden. After walking for a couple hours through town, I finally arrived at the hostel. When I checked ... read more

Woahhhh apologies for the lack of blog entries lol. I have been having far too much fun and been far too busy to update this! So I will attempt to remember what I have been up to but ha yeh. So last time I was in the Czech Republic...seems like years ago lol. So next stop was Germanyyy! I went to Dresden and then to Berlin. Dresden was beautifulll and I stayed in a cool hostel called Kangaroo something. I didn't get to spend long there though as I had to catch the train to Berlin. The transport system in Germany is AMAZING. Using the S bahn and U bahn I saw all the sights like the Brandenberg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, Holocaust memorial and I queued for 2 hours to go up into the Reichstag. View ... read more

I arrived in Zagreb in daylight. Two somewhat frustrating hours later, I finally found my host Dunja’s home. Dunja is a singer and folk song enthusiast. She can talk about folk music all night, if you let her – and you’d be a fool not to. Dunja set out early on just trying to give me some background on the Croatian music scene, and introduced me to a few artists. Dunja’s apprentice, Nina Romic, was the first Croatian musician I heard when I arrived at Dunja’s home. She’d set it up so that I would get to hear Nina right away when I walked in the door. Her soft voice, laid over misty, haunting arrangements was quite striking. I learned a tremendous amount from all the time I spent with Dunja. “I’m very emotional,” she said, ... read more
