My Croatian journey is off to a fantastic start. I did, however, have to return to the hostel to get a pen that works to complete that opening sentence so hopefully that is not a bad omen. It's Tuesday evening and my stay in Zagreb is coming to a close. I will catch a train tomorrow down the Dalmatian coast to Split. This is a very appropriate time and place for me to begin this journal as I find myself sitting on a bench at the top of a hill overlooking the city. The view rivals that of anything that I have come across in my travels. I am not surprised that Zagreb is a beautiful place--most European capitals are. To find such unbelievable beauty, comes as quite a shock to me. It is depressing to ... read more

Join us as we visit this developing democracy as it emerges from the chaos of Europe’s latest war. Croatia is crescent shaped, ironically because it clung to its coast while resisting the Ottomans who threatened from Bosnia for centuries. Hungarians took it over in 1102 and held on until the “war to end all wars” which we call WWI. It then joined its neighbors in becoming Yugoslavia. It declared independence in 1991 — but fought the Serbian-dominated Yugoslav army for 5 bloody ... read more

We woke up late today because of miles and miles of walking and traveling and sleeping on hard mattresses! Oh and snoring Australians (it was so bad, I had to wake the poor Aussie up). We got out around 9am and skipped breakfast! It is probably a good thing we got an extra hour or two of sleep.. because we had some unexpected surprised coming our way! Last night we planned out our route, so we had a good idea of where were going. First we stopped at the market which was very overwhelming because there were so many people, but the space was not so big. We got some souvenirs and headed to the cathedral. At first there was a mass going on, so we watched the mass from the back and when it was ... read more

Our spontaneous decision to head into Zagreb was fueled by the chance to experience U2 in this unique setting as well as an interest of seeing more of this incredible country that really is catching us a bit by surprise. We had thought most of our enjoyment would be along the coast but this venture inland has been wonderful. The country (or at least the city of Zagreb) has truly been captured by the U2 visit. The whole city is buzzing and accommodation is non-existent. The two concerts back to back meant that on the 9th and 10th there was not a room to be had. People were coming from all over Europe for this spectacle. A flurried set of emails sent out (http://www.travel-library.com/ ) (good site) and we ended up securing 2 nights in a ... read more

We left Optija after talking a bit with Davor...and stopped for lunch in Karlovac. We ate at McDonald's and then met Domagoj at the toll area in Zagreb so he could take us to the hotel. We checked in and then went down to Jelacic Square to do some shopping. We also met Domagoj, Martina, Lea and Luka. Domagoj called Drazen Petrovic's mom to see if we could get into his museum since it is closed for the summer and she arranged someone to meet us there. We got a tour of the museum, which was amazing, and we bought a few things from it. It is an amazing place... We then went to eat...we tried to get into Boban's but they didn't have room for 10 of us, so we went to the restaurant at ... read more

We left Tucepi at around 9:15 this morning and after about 40 minutes on the scariest road I have ever been on through the Croatian mountainside with hairpin turns and 90 degree rock faces looking straight down at the water we reached the A1 highway - a most welcome sight. With a "speed limit" of 130 we were in Zagreb in no time (once my nuckles recovered from the climb up the mountain). This is just a short stop - we will go out for a walk about and dinner and then tomorrow morning off on the train to Budapest.... read more

Today started out as hot or hotter than yesterday but the trick was to get going early. We were out by 8:30 and had 5 good hours of touring done before the sweltering midday sun got to a point where us mere mortals couldn't handle it. (People here are dressed in jeans and leggings and even long sleeve shirts believe it or not! The temperature in the main square at 9 pm read 28 degrees so I can only imagine what it was at noon today! ). All that said, the mornings and late evenings are great and we took full advantage. We saw the Milonvic sculture museum (his home full of sculptures that he donated as a museum as well as the museum of naive art. I've included a few pics of the best churches ... read more

After leaving Sarajevo we headed up to Zagreb for a few days. We’re trying to make it a bit closer towards the top of Eastern Europe (i.e. Hungary & Poland), before our InterRail tickets run out, which sadly means we'll have to give the Croatian coast a miss this time. The train was an older train. Air-con came in the form of opening the window in the carriage and then opening the window in the carriage hallway, and trying to create a wind tunnel though the train!! I learned that trick on the previous train by watching this old guy! However, this only works when the train is moving, and as we would spend SO MUCH time stopped at stations this knowledge seemed pointless. I share it though with anyone who may find it useful. The ... read more
