Hellooo Americans! Its Sara. I apologize in advance for my terrible punctuation, these keyboards dont like contractions, apparently. We are in a really fun hostel in Zagreb, arriving here after taking a 5:57 AM train, which really was horrid, except we had our own compartment. Our last night in Vienna we spent at the Museumquartier, where there is a plaza between the major museums that people hang out and talk in, and can get drinks from a nearby terrace/cafe thingie. Anywho, we bid adieu to Alex and Csilla, our wonderul emergency hosts and set out for Hostel Lika. We met some really nice people and Leah and I had dinner and spent the evening with a girl named Suzy, who is originally from Ohio, but is studying at the University of Manchester. After a really superb ... read more

A year is over. I am back in Austin, I cant believe that I am already repacking for my next life adventure in Nashville. I have not forgotten of course that no blogs have been written for the last 3 weeks of travel. The last week at home has been quite busy catching up with family and friends as well as trying to readjust to things like driving and get organized for my move. So....here we go. There are lots of blogs coming, so I will start from the very beginning and space them out as much as possible so you don't get overwhelmed. Its a good thing I kept a very detailed travel journal! First up. Stuttgart to Zagreb. After a short train ride from Karlsruhe to Stuttgart Airport, Justus and I caught our flight ... read more

Monday 23rd June: (Video footage still to be uploaded) - Took a catamaran from Hvar Island to Split and looked around the harbour. Unfortunately no time to look inside Diocletians Palace as I had to catch a bus to Zagreb. Arrived in Zagreb at 11pm and checked into a cheap hostel for 4 hours as I have a 4.56am train to catch from Zagreb to Budapest in the morning. ... read more

As I left the comfort of EU style open boarders and had my passport scrutinised at the Croatian boarder, I had the warm and fuzzy feeling of "adventure". I read that Zagreb was "often overlooked by travellers, making a b-line for the coast" (Lonely Planet) which made it an intriguing destination. Sure, it rained almost the whole time and is not a particulary beautiful city, but this was far out-weighed by the people I met, the warm hospitality of the locals and the wierd and memorable events that occured. Once I was absolutely sure, I negotiated, sucessfully, the tram system once I arrived at 9pm to make it sucessfully to Hostel Lika. Now this place was unique and is a contender for the coverted award of "best hostel of the trip", the reasons of which will ... read more

I rode a natural high into Croatia. My whole life, i´d always been so excited to visit the land of my ancestors. I don´t know what it is about Croatia, but i´ve always felt more of a connection to it than my German or Irish roots. I was so excited getting off the train in Zagreb as i headed to the main town square. It was a Sunday afternoon and all the locals were out. There was old men performing on stage, all sorts of things being sold in an open market and culture all around. Jelacic´s statue in the center used to face the Hungarians, but was taken down and hidden during WWII for preservation purposes. Now he´s been reassembled and faces the Serbs. I took pictures of Jelacic´s statue ( a croatian hero who ... read more

Thursday 22 May 2008 It was a restless night on the bus from Korcula to Zagreb. frequently through the night we would hear the bus driver's panicked call "passport check! passport check!" Each time we quickly pulled out our passports only to be passed by so that the police could check the id of the non-tourists. It wasn't until afterwards that we realised why. Thanks to yet another dodgy Lonely Planet map, we didn't even know that we'd passed through Bosnia along the highway! We had changed countries and didn't even know! The driver also had stopped the bus late at night for a dinner, beer, coffee and football stop at a roadside eatery high on the cliffs overlooking the Adriatic coast. Michael joined the boys inside for Karlovacko and football while Barbara stretched her legs ... read more

I had been training with an Aussie Rules team in Vienna, the Vienna Kangaroos, for a number of weeks and the first of the Central European Cup Tournament's had arrived. I travelled with another Aussie ex-pat, Jimmy, in his car from Vienna to Zagreb. The trip took us through the WeinStrasse near Graz and into Slovenia. Travelling through Slovenia was an amazing sight with clear skies, steep mountains, and green everywhere. This was probably the most beautiful countryside I have ever seen. After 4-5 hours we finally arrived to destination Zagreb where we were playing 9-a-side football on a soccer pitch. A good concept to teach some of the Europeans the basics of the game and to allow a free-flowing game. The sky was clear, not a breath of wind in the air, and an excellent ... read more

So, Berlin was pretty cool, we didn't get out to see a lot of sights but enjoyed definitely enjoyed our experience there. We just chilled out our fist day there, walked around a bit and had some dinner at one of the many outdoor cafes which was renowned in the lonely planet guide as being the best restaurant in Budapest. It was pretty good and it was nice to just sit and people watch. The second day was our last day with Alex as he was on a tighter travelling schedule than we are and needed to carry on to Croatia. So it was his day and to celebrate we checked out Margarit Island and the baths. We rented this four person bike. haha, we toured the island without any major crashes so it was pretty ... read more
