Geo: 45.815, 15.9785Trying to burn some Slovenian tolars today - bought some Haribo gummy bears. Haven't had these in ages. A rainy and dreary train ride to Zagreb - uneventful. I ate some orange chocolate that I had bought. Little bits of peel inside - normally I hate that but it tasted pretty good. I have lots of tolars left - I'll have to change it in Croatia. Got to Zagreb, checked into the hostel, and walked around the old town. Things are fairly expensive here, almost on par with areas in Western Europe. Walked to a mall ... very cramped. Also saw another cathedral ... the usual. Got to the market just as it was closing. Good produce but pricey. Had a jelly donut - not very good but it was nice to have something ... read more

1. The Architecture: the buildings are ornate, grandiose and beautiful. The parks are green and fountain-filled. The squares are open and the al fresco dining irrestible! 2. The food: The fruit and vegies and fresh, juicy and delicious. The meat and cheese are unmissable. The hot chocolate and beer at Tolkein's are the best. There's lots of pizza. And did I mention cheap? (compared to NZ) 3. The people: Beautiful and oh so friendly. The dogs are also fantastic (especially the big, big, fluffy one). And don't have guns (see the stone arch for details). In Conclusion: Zagreb is wonderful, can't wait til we come back and explore the rest of te country. We 'heart' Croatia!... read more

We left Budapest at 3pm on the train. We met a lovely Canadian couple who were on their honeymoon and interrailing of all things! Unsurprisingly, for the third time in the third different country we bumped into our favorite french people Charlotte and Stephanie on the train. Arrived in Zagreb at 10pm decided to follow an English couple who seemed to know where they were going, soon discovered they were lying bastards and had no clue where the hostel was. After much deliberation and consultation we located the Ravnice Youth Hostel. First hostel that we have stayed in that was actually built to be a hostel. As everyone in our dorm was already asleep we went straight to bed. Next day we planned to spend sightseeing, but we were out of sights to see in an ... read more

Hello everyone! Another country, another random keyboard format to contend with. This one continues the Hungarian trick of reversing the zs and ys, and throws in another couple of quirks to puzzle the mind. Can't wait for Bosnia, where the cryllic alphabet is thrown into the mix. Anyhoo... Our two nights in Zagreb have been and gone, and we can honestly say that one day in this city is time enough. It's very nice and pretty, and is set in lovely greenery with medieval state buildings atop two hills, but most of the sights take all of two hours to see. Especially when they are all going through restoration work. It seems that the Wellington City Council isn't the only municipal body with surplus construction funds at the end of the financial year, as everything in ... read more

Okay, so on to Croatia! The two nights in Zagreb were perfect. It gave us a day to explore the capital city by foot and wheel. We had a walking guide from one of our tour books which took us around various aspects of the city including a botanical garden with a Japanese pond, the olde town, and up a funicular railway line to the top of the city. Of all places, I didn’t expect it to be so accessible. We did have two encounters with trams and near, very near, misses! In hindsight, it was quite funny if you could imagine us running away from an oncoming tram. ... read more

Our last full day in Croatia was fun, we went out to this club/pub/bar district in Zagreb, to a pub where Ivona's boyfriend Ivan was dj'ing that night. It was a small, cool little pub with a great vibe. I had a couple Karlovacko and Renata had a multi-vitamin drink. I wish we had those in Canada. At one point I went to the bathroom, and noticed that the wall between the mens and women's was only about 5 ft high. I wasn't too sure how to react, so I just pretended that I couldn't see into the women's toilets. As soon as we got there it started pouring. We were going to go to this techno dance club but there were 8 of us that couldn't fit in a Yugo, and we weren't going to ... read more

Posting Time: 8:21pm Location: Zagreb We planned to leave Betina on saturday evening. Basically all we did was swimming, eating and napping. What a nice life. We had to head back to Zagreb on saturday evening and I will take the train to Venice on sunday evening. I called Barbara, she wants to go out on saturday night and told me to call her when we get to Zagreb. The drive is 3.5 to 4 hours, we left at 10:30pm. We arrived in zagreb at 2:00am. Renta and I are hanging out at the internet cafe in downtown Zagreb. Its really hot out today now. Want to hear about my trip here? Sure ya do. When I landed in Toronto we couldnt get off the plane because of a storm. I waited in that bloody plane for three hours. When I finally got off I had 15 min. to get to the next flight here. Needless to say my luggage didnt make it on with me. Now I have one underwear and one sock to get me by until it gets here. Oh well. Jon will like this: Evian water in Vienna is 1.50 euro. Beer is 1 euro. Beer is officially cheaper than water. I noticed in Vienna, everyone was drinking Red Bull. I guess it really is that popular in ... read more

Posting time: Tuesday 8:30am. Location: Zvon's apartment, Zagreb, Croatia. Another lazy day in Vienna, basically I sat in the courtyard and read. I figured this is a good place to be lazy. Besides it is very hot out there. I finally moved my lazy ass and went to a shopping area. Everything seems to be on sale. Diesel store have 50% off for most of the tops and 30% off for the jeans. I would buy some if I am not backpacking. I can't afford the extra weight. {PG-18} I am starting to have a bad habit, I don't get to the train station until 15 mins before the train leave...... not a great idea. Since you don't have time to buy something to eat.....and I like to eat. Anyway, I don't know what to expect ... read more
