Friday July 26 – Today was got up at 5:30am. We wanted to take the bus back to Ljubljana at 6:25am so that we could get the 8:15am train to Zagreb. The next train wasn’t until 2:45pm, and we would have wasted the day. The bus came on time and got us to the train station around 7:45am. The train was also on time, which was great since it is a train coming from Zurich. This was actually the train I had considered taking from Zagreb to Zurich to get home. I’m glad I just bought a flight instead. There were a lot of people waiting for the train, and we didn’t have a seat reservation, so I was worried. Many of the seats on the train had reservation tags, but many turned out to be leftover tags from an earlier portion of the trip, so we were fine to sit. We made it to Zagreb by 10:45 and then took care of a couple of things at the train station, like getting some money and asking some questions for Tina’s trip back to Munich later.
When we were done, we waited for tram #13 to take us to the
apartment we rented. Tram #13 must be on vacation also, because it never came. There were tram road works and many trams had alternate routes, so we found another tram going in the right direction and that worked out ok. When we got off the tram, we asked at a nearby restaurant if we could use their wifi to contact the guy with the key. They let us and we emailed to say we were waiting. Meanwhile, we ordered some lunch. It was Italian so we both got pasta. Jagor came and showed me the apartment, which was nearby and on the (American) fifth floor up, but with no (British) lift. There was also no a/c – and there was supposed to be – and no fans. Excellent. When we got back down to Tina, the lunch had just arrived. After we ate, we settled in to our place and then went out to see the town. It was hot – over 90 degrees and will remain so for the next ten days apparently – so that makes it a little less fun to wander the streets. But wander we did. We saw many churches and the cathedral and the
main square. We eventually ended with a bubble tea before heading back to the apartment. We weren’t hungry since the lunch was so big, so we didn’t eat dinner, though Tina had an ice cream on the way home. At home the evening goes by so fast. We washed some laundry and used the internet and then it was time for bed.
Saturday July 27 – We had a relaxed start today. At least Tina did. I was still up relatively early, who knows why. Tina got up at 9am and then we made eggs and bacon with a side of yogurt for breakfast. First up on the itinerary was a cemetery just outside Zagreb, reportedly one of the most beautiful in Europe. We took a bus to get there, but it was a short ride. The grounds were really extensive. It was so sunny and hot that we did not see it all by any means, but what we did see was cool. I always like graveyards, for some reason. Maybe it was my photography class field trip to one in high school. I especially like graves with pictures on them.
We took the bus
back into town and then took a tram to the train station. Tina settled up her plans to get back to Munich for her flight to Florida (via NYC). It will require an overnight train from Split to Zagreb and then another train to Munich, and all this after a five hour bus ride from Dubrovnik. It will be an epic journey home. From there we took a tram to the bus station to buy our ticket for tomorrow’s journey to Plitvice National Park. On the way to the bus station, we noticed a movie theater. On the way back, we stopped there and ended up seeing The Heat instead of going to a museum. But it was great. There was air conditioning and Tina had popcorn and gave me some. Very fun. From there we went for some food, since we’d skipped lunch. We went to Good Food and had the Good F#@* burger. I also had a berry smoothie. At this point it was after 5pm and we decided to make our way back to the apartment and have a relaxing night. I updated my blog, which takes forever, and we watched some True Blood and Dexter for
background noise. I also washed the clothes I wore today and my pajamas since we still had a washing machine. Then when I finished we watched Mirror Mirror, which was a fun diversion. We each found an ice pack in the freezer and used in on the back of our necks to keep us cooler. It worked well. I also got repacked – again – and went to sleep. In only a couple of hours my pjs dried enough for me to wear them to bed. Amazingly hot and dry here.
