Geo: 44.7804, 15.6349Okay folks we made it to Croatia yesterday and Handsome Pop's most anticipated location today, although there are several only a smidgen behind. We sit here composing the blog listening to our kids' favorite songs (Cotton Fields and King of the Road) on an iPhone speaker. We're sure they will be pleased.Oh the lakes, what can one say? We imagine there were 10-12 levels of lakes, although Bird recalls seeing 16 somewhere. The lakes maintain different elevations, thus there are waterfalls between them, many appearing to flow from the ground. At some locations the water falls from crescents. The water is crystal clear. We thought water in the Caribbean was clear, but here the bottom reaches up to you. However, at least in the Caribbean, it is level where here we were constantly walking ... read more

I was so happy to see one of the items on my bucket list. On our way from Zagreb to Split, our friends took us to this beautiful national park with the stepped lakes and waterfalls, crystal clear blue waters, and stunning scenery. I was so excited for this. It is not a direct route, so we had taken the long way through the countryside. Fay and I were able to get to know the 8th member of our party, Marko. He is definitely talkative and the life of the party. He recommended a stop for lunch at this cute little spot near the park, Rastoke, where he said they had the best fish. The fish did not disappoint. I was still full from our brunch, but I tried it - when in Rome, right? Who ... read more

This was our last morning in Zagreb – Stacey started the day by getting the rental car, or more accurately, she met with the person from the rental car agency who personally delivered the car and explained how to drive in Croatia. We thought we were getting an Audi or BMW, but instead we got a Peugeot – it has a lion as an emblem. This was apparently a free upgrade – brand new and much bigger car than we were supposed to get. Thank you Pat and Ellie Brennan!!Meanwhile, James discovered Zagreb is not so great for running. He got in another visit of the Promenade and a park in the city before heading back to meet up with Stacey. We set off, back to Aida, for strudels. It was late morning, so they only ... read more

Today we headed just a few kilometers down the road to the lakes. We decided to take Irena's advice and follow route C that would take us from Entry Gate 1 to Station 1 and from there right up to the top lakes, then a walk back down to the ferry, across the lake and the final walk back to the car around the lower parts. I'm not quite sure how far we walked, but all in all it took about six hours and it was blinking hot. It was well worth it though. I have never seen such beautiful water. It was an amazing azure blue. Apparently it is due to the limestone and chalk it runs over and filters through. The water was amazingly clear, which made the fish look as if they were ... read more

There is a lot to love about Croatia. This is in my Top 5 favorite European countries to visit, so I will try to help you understand why this little place is so incredible. The first cool thing about Croatia is that it is the childhood home of Nikola Tesla. The next cool thing is that they still use their own currency, the Kuna, and not the Euro. Their capital city, Zagreb is smaller and cleaner than many other capital cities. The design is very old-fashioned with the layout revolving around the city center. Although, there is much more green space planned throughout the small city than one would expect. Another reason this place is awesome is because the weather is semi-tropical, so it’s great year-round. Also, there are hundreds of islands to skirt away to ... read more

21 April 2015 Tuesday. After the huge breakfast which was also enough to make sandwiches for lunch, Mike and I proceeded the couple kilometers to Entrance 1 to the Plitvici Lakes National Park. The park, founded in 1949, is composed of sixteen lakes with travertine rock waterfalls between each one. Interestingly, the first shots of the Croatian – Yugoslav War we fired here on Easter Sunday in 1991…on such a holy day and in such a beautiful park the war’s first casualty was a park policeman. This has got to be a definition of evil. At the information center they provided advice as to which trails were open; the others being flooded due to the spring runoff or under repair as the boardwalks can deteriorate. We decided to take the cave access to the lower lakes ... read more

During our stay in Croatia, we decided to book a trip to a place called Plitvice Lakes. We didn't know much about this place, only what we had been told by the lady who was selling the excursion. We were shown some photo's and it looked incredible, beautiful lakes with turquoise water, multiple waterfalls and amazing greenery! We couldn't wait to arrive there and explore. It was an early start for the tour, we were picked up by a private driver who drove us into the city of Zadar where we got the coach from. We were advised that as we were going quite high up into the mountains it can get quite cold, and sometimes be raining. Ooops i hadn't planned for any other weather than sunshine so i had to treat myself to a ... read more
