Our final day in Hvar started much too early for a stop that was meant to be relaxing, but, it allowed us to make it to Split in time for our schedule tours. Also, fortunately for us, we apparently had one of the last ferry tickets off the island today, presumably from Ultra stragglers. After a quick breakfast, we walked along the shore to the ferry terminal while the hotel used a golf-cart to bring our bags and others’ over to the ferry terminal. With the ferry not yet arrived and thinking we had time, Stacey went and got some cappuccinos to go while James waited in-line. Unfortunately, that plan backfired and it took forever to get the Cappuccinos so we were almost the last people to board the ferry. We enjoyed the ride back and ... read more

This was our last day in Hvar, so we decided to spend some time exploring the town and started by heading up to the old fortress overlooking the town. We grabbed breakfast and checked the status on the hotel pool – staff were hard at work cleaning up after Ultra. They had already drained the pool and were halfway through pressure washing the dirt away (there was lots and lots of dirt). Once entering the town, we stopped at the top of the Arsenal, a large building with a terrace overlooking St. Stephen’s Square. It is also home to the first public theatre in Europe – in the 17th Century or so, the working class citizens got fed up with being second-class citizens to the rich merchants and Venetians. Eventually part of the compromise to appease ... read more

Tuesday morning started calmly – the calm before the storm. We headed up for breakfast, got towels from the hotel, and went to meet our excursion guides. After waiting for six other guests, including two that spent all of the previous day at the pool just like we did, we boarded our boat and headed across the bay to pick up a few additional guests; in total there were 12 of us. We had a little over an hour’s ride to our first stop – Blue Cave. We sat with 2 couples in the back – it was the shaded region of the boat. One was a couple from Canada (the guy was originally from Perth, Australia but had moved to Edmonton to be with his girlfriend). They were traveling for 2.5 months before going back ... read more

Since we would only be allowed to use the pool today, we decided to maximize our use of it – it was also our first day to just sit back and relax, so it worked on both fronts. We slept in, a little, and headed up for breakfast. As with the previous hotels, Amfora’s breakfast was a full buffet with an assortment of teas, “pastries” (rice cakes), fruit, cheese, meat – literally a gigantic ham ready for slicing, cereal, eggs, sausage, bacon, mini-chicken franks, breads, salads, and waffles, pancakes and bread puddings. It was quite delicious. Stacey favored the eggs and this amazing chocolate bread that was just the right balance between hearty and sweet. James favored the sour cherry bread pudding and the cantaloupe. After eating, we headed out to the pool area. We managed ... read more

We started the day early with a delicious breakfast at the Hotel Ethno. Although nothing exquisite, the breakfasts have exceeded our expectations of breads and cheese; each breakfast had several choices and a few American-style proteins (eggs, sausage, bacon). However, if you thought bacon was bad for you, you should see the bacon in Croatia – it’s almost entirely fat, with a small portion of meat and generally not worth eating unless you really enjoy the taste of pure fat. After packing up our gear, we headed out of the Plitvicka Jezera area and made our way towards the Dalmatian Coast. The trip was generally uneventful, but there was some magnificent scenery along the way. A lot of rolling hills in the first hour (fun side note: Europeans consider this area most similar to the Western ... read more

MISSING July 11th 2015

Today we visited the Plitvicka Jezero, or Plitvice Lakes. Thank you Meagan Wengrove to the tickets into Plitvice and for the hotel right outside the park! This national park was the original reason we wanted to visit Croatia. It is BEAUTIFUL! We spent the entire day here, and actually hiked some parts more than once. In total, we probably hiked well over 8 miles, well worth it. There are so many waterfalls it is unbelievable! By the end we almost felt “waterfalled-out” and some of the smaller waterfalls seemed more like babbling brooks, because the others are so spectacular.Plitvice is broken up into two lakes regions – an upper set of lakes and lower set of lakes, with the National Park’s largest lake serving as the boundary between the two areas. The book James bought prior ... read more

This was our last morning in Zagreb – Stacey started the day by getting the rental car, or more accurately, she met with the person from the rental car agency who personally delivered the car and explained how to drive in Croatia. We thought we were getting an Audi or BMW, but instead we got a Peugeot – it has a lion as an emblem. This was apparently a free upgrade – brand new and much bigger car than we were supposed to get. Thank you Pat and Ellie Brennan!!Meanwhile, James discovered Zagreb is not so great for running. He got in another visit of the Promenade and a park in the city before heading back to meet up with Stacey. We set off, back to Aida, for strudels. It was late morning, so they only ... read more

Thursday morning started with a continental breakfast, which we figured would be light pastries. Oh how wrong we were. James said it was the biggest breakfast buffet he had seen – there was a selection of cheeses and marinated veggies, meats, yogurt, smoothies, eggs, sausages, and hot dogs (every little kids dream come true – hot dog for breakfast), local pancakes which are like crepes with jam in the middle, and American pancakes. Additionally, there was a huge selection of breads and pastries with a machine that dispenses Nutella! Or something like Nutella. Espresso drinks are a huge deal in Croatia, so there is also a machine that makes a good cappuccino. There was also champagne set out for those inclined to start their day with a mimosa. Feeling stuffed and caffeinated we set out to ... read more

After last-minute changes in flight schedules (our original flight from Chicago to Paris was canceled, and the two of us were booked to Paris on two different flights), our adventure started late Wednesday afternoon in Zagreb, the capitol of Croatia. Zagreb is a very walking oriented city and our hotel was nearby to the city center, so it was easy to get around. After checking into the hotel, we started our trip by visiting the Zagreb Eye, which is a lounge on the top of the tallest building in the heart of the city. We got some great photos, and were able to pick out many of the city’s most well-known buildings. Following the Eye, we went to Moonshine, a whiskey bar, where James sampled some whiskey and Stacey tried her first Croatia white wine - ... read more
