We drove to Zagreb on Easter Sunday. Let me rephrase that. We spent the entirety of Easter Sunday driving to Zagreb. The bus ride was along the Dalmatian coast again, which was a win, and we even got to stop in Split for a brief break! It was a really good thing that we had loaded up on snacks because all of the things were closed. Everywhere. We got to Zagreb and night and found our couchsurfer's flat easily. His name is Julien and he's from France. He moved to Zagreb for a girl and fell in love with the city. He's a professional photographer who takes these amazing pictures and is super nice. Kathleen and I were exhausted from sitting on a bus all day (it's real, okay?), so we fell asleep pretty quickly. On ... read more

We woke up early and started the 1.5 hour drive to the Plitvice Lakes National Park. We used the restrooms before our 4-6 hour hike (and by restrooms, I mean holes in the ground) and headed to the bus to drive us to the starting point. The hike was gorgeous, with crystal clear waters, waterfalls, beautiful flowers, a boat ride, and more. We absolutely loved it and felt that we went at the perfect time of year - it was not too warm and the tourists weren't as bad as other times of the year. We changed altitude many times and saw such beautiful scenery. After we finished our hike, we drove to Zagrab (the capital). We were so hungry after only having a snack during our hike, so we showered quickly and walked to a ... read more

Sunday July 28 – Another early day. Up before 6am, out before 7am. We had a bus to catch at 7:30 and weren’t sure when the tram would come. We also didn’t know where to buy a tram ticket so early, so we went on without one and hoped for the best. It worked out. We only had three stops. Two other Americans living abroad were there and told us which stop we needed. In the end, they were on the same bus, in the seats next to us! But there was a guy in their seat and he told them that people just sit wherever, so they sat behind us instead. The bus arrived at 9:45am and we never saw them again. We walked to our guesthouse and saw there was no a/c but we ... read more

Short entry today ladies and gents! Spent the day enjoying the park again. Since I had done most of the trails yesterday, today I went down to the ferry and took that around the lakes. So beautiful. The park was crowded again, sigh, but I did find one spot that was relatively calm. Even had a few birds join me - it was lovely to hear them sing as I wrote in my journal for a bit. I actually got quite cold after awhile haha. It's warm today, but sitting in the shade by the water... there is a strong enough breeze. Brrrr. I had to move in search of somewhere else to sit that was in the sunlight. Speaking of sun, I have the best tan going on right now... but only on my arms? ... read more

I really should just post photos from today - they say more than anything I could type. (Internet connection is woefully bad here... so... photos might wait until tomorrow. I'll be back in Zagreb at night, so I'll have proper wifi.) Plitvice is stunningly beautiful - one of the nicest places I’ve ever been, and that is saying something. Again, I fear the photos don’t do it justice... even if they are lovely. The colour of the water, the waterfalls, the trees, the waterfalls, the electric blue dragonflies... did I mention the waterfalls? I don’t think there’s a spot in the park where you can’t hear a waterfall, and very few places where you don’t see them. They are everywhere - big, small, solo, in a cluster... just all sorts. Truth be told I much preferred ... read more

Zadar and Plitvicka National Park 10 to 11 July 2013 The road from Sibenik to Zadar along the central coast of Croatia was again, magnificent. I will let the pictures tell the story. The coast from Split to Zadar is 149 kms. The coastal road from Sibenik to Zadar is 74 kms. These roads are slow travel because of the windiness, the number of villages and the number of cars on the road. We didn’t mind because that gave us more time to look at the scenery. We stopped as much as we could but we wanted to get to Plitvicka National Park in good time because this was going to be yet another highlight of Croatia. When we arrived at Zadar we parked and walked around the town. As usual, there are glassy café-bars sprinkled ... read more

The Plitvice lakes are 16 lakes strung together with streams, in the middle of a forest. They are considered one the best attractions in Europe. The colors of these lakes and the greenery around them are truly magnificent. They are also home to many rare european species of animals and birds. I will visit them to enjoy the natural beauty of Croatia. Below is a short video of pictures taken at the lakes. ... read more

Well, todays blog won't take long to read 'cos we didn't do a lot because it rained! We did need to go to the market in the next town about 8km away as we didn't have anything for dinner so we gave Cindy a short run in the countryside. The villages on SS1 which runs north towards Zagreb are all just a few houses,a market about the size of a 4 Square store at home and a restaurant if they are lucky. After last nights delicious tuna salad and in the light of nothing else in tins we could understand or any edible looking fresh meat we opted again for tuna! You can't go wrong with a tin of tuna in Croatia because the word is spelt the same in Croatian as it is in English or at least ... read more

We had hoped for a fine, sunny day to visit the lakes area of the National Park and we got it.Tomorrow the forecast is not so good so we will make the most of it today. We had the option of driving the car to the entrance of the Lakes,a UNESCO World Heritage site, and parking at K7 per hour but the BBA V2 avoids parking fees if it can.....so we walked the 2km to the entrance telling ourselves as we went that we were warming up our limbs for the days walking in the park.We weren't quite sure what we would be telling ourselves to will us on our way home after what we expect will be several more kilometres around the lakes but that was for the future and we always support each other so ... read more
