Got up this AM, showered and suddenly decided to skip Mozart, the countryside and hopped a train to Vienna! So we crossed through all of Austria, checked into a hotel, purchased a local train (baun) ticket and got oriented to the city by heading to "the" Opera House. Of course we were hungry after all this traveling and went into a beautiful cafe next to the OH. We ordered tall coffee ice cream floats, sparlking water and a salad. (The schnietzle thing will have wait until it cools down here.) Unfortunately we found a bug in our salad. I wondered if the Viennese waiters are as emotional about complaints as the french waiter was when I had complained about Jenee's Creme Brulee back in Paris. The Vienesse waiter offered another entree but since we were no ... read more

Jenee and I are now in Salzburg. We spent about 6 days in Berlin. It was surprisingly cold and rainy. We got around town using the local train system. The highlight if you could call it that was a exceptionally done tour given by Paul's roommate, Edo to a concentration camp. We stayed in East Berlin where most studetns live and experience some of the pop culture. Edo and Paul's other roommate Stephka really personalized our experience. On Monday we traveled by train to a medievil walled city-- Rothenburg. We stayed in the home of a local just outside the wall. The town is storybook like. The highlight was a trip to the Crime and Punishment Museum! When I get it together I'll post a photo of the "Tongue Screw!" Another highlight was the "Night Watchman" ... read more

On to Austria. I had planned to meet up with my roommate James in Austria since he is taking a German course in the town of Klagenfurt. I first spent 3 days in Vienna, just in time for a bunch of rain, which kind of takes away from the experience. I was also getting to the point where I had enough of seeing the big cities and wanted to spend more time in the countryside and the smaller towns. However, I stayed at a pretty fun hostel and ran into a couple of guys there that I had met in Prague so we hung out a bit. I also checked out a couple of decent museums to get out of the rain. Im not much of an art buff but I actually enjoyed seeing some of ... read more

We drove to Austria to a small town called Hopfgarten. It was a very cute little town in Austria, everthing was so cute and perfect. All the houses had bright flowers in planter boxes along their window sills. The place we stayed at was a big house, full of rooms. We have started to be impressed by small things that we never thought about. Things like having our own shower and toilet has become a real novelty. And enough room to open our suitcases has almost become a luxury. But this place was lovely. We had a really yummy dinner at the house and then a group of us went for a walk into the small town. Some of the group were going into drink at a pub but we decided that a low key night ... read more

Vienna is our next stop, Vienna home of the Hapsburg family had more palaces than anything else. This royal family liked their residences more than their incestous relationships. We proceeded to visit as many palaces as we could, our favorite was the summer residence "Shoobrum Palace" this of course being around 5 miles from their Winter residence "Neuberg". I had to see all there was to see in the summer palace so we dished out the money for the 40 room tour instead of the measly 20 room tour. It was worth the dough just to see the royal porcelain potty! We also enjoyed some culture by enjoying the outdoor operas by city hall in the evenings. We lasted maybe an hour before starting to get really bored, operas are definitely not our thing. All in ... read more

We took the overnight train to Salzburg and the next morning we were in fairy tale land. Outside we had a beautiful view of a castle and just glorious scenery all around. Salzburg will forever be remembered as one of the most beautiful and cleanest places we have ever visited. To top off the experience of spectacular scenery we also had the BEST and I mean BEST BEER IN THE WORLD!!! People who know me know that I do not like beer but I have to admit that I know understand why people enjoy a good beer especially if served next to some authentic Austrian bratwurst. On the advice of a friend I begged and I mean begged Michael to take me on the "Sound of Music" tour. Yes, folks it is as cheesy as it ... read more

Here in Innsbruck we got a Pension room with a t.v, thank god. I see London got the 2012 games over Paris, damn rights. We're pretty much resting up here. We've done the walk around and seen some sights. Innsbruck relics over its Habsbourg history, particularly Maximilian I. Innsbruck feels smaller than its 100,000 population. Its surrounded by gigantic mountains, so the views are great...only now its raining (which reminds me that yesterday the temperature was 9 in the evening, bloody unbearable for July)...So Ive got my Alps fix, and we're going to head to Venice...oh I almost forgot that our Innsbruck stop was made possible by me altering the dates on our eurail passes after the conductor never stamped it. Hi there, back again to tell you about Vienna! Well, we arrived on a beautiful sunny day and walked into our hostel room only to see the two guys who we had befriended in Interlaken, Switzerland sitting there! It was absolutely bizzare! Great though since it then started to rain - and did not stop until we left 2 days later. So we basically went to the supermarket and made food in the hostel kitchen and played cards all night with them. The next day Graeme and I attempted to see some of Vienna's sights but the strong wind and rain sent us back to the hostel early. That night we hunted down some other Canadians and celebrated Canada Day. It was great, although we were a little sad to have missed the Salmon Festival of ... read more
