As I walked through the streets of Vienna I realized how great and imperial the entire city is. It is pretty cool to walk on Graben (1st district) around the corner to Kohlmarkt, which is Vienna's most expensive shopping street. Yes, you can find high-end designers, however the scene is more of a "has been baker/taylor/silver smith to the royal palace", which is just up the road. Buildings aren't too tall so the whole city has a very laid back atmosphere and relaxedness to it I really like. Now I can understand why Viennese spend that much time in coffeehouses and just enjoy....what a great attitude. ... read more

The scenery has changed a lot since crossing into Austria. Reminds me of the west coast of Canada somewhat, with the massive hills and blue water. The service stop we went to was regarded as the best service stop in Europe and damn was it good!!!! Pork with crackle, creamy potatoes and veggies - all just like your Grandma made it!!! Had the drink they suggested which just tastes like fizzy apple juice. It’s called Armadoodela or something equally as dodgy…I’m happy to be here where it’s the home of the schnitzel and meat and potatoes!! We arrived at our hotel resort in finally, so nice inside, wish they were all like this! This is how I’m supposed to live!! The rooms are spacious and there are chandeliers throughout the hotel and trees outside the windows!! ... read more

Coming from the Czech Rep. to the land of Euros was a bit of a shock. We arrived from Cesky Krumlov into Vienna last night at midnight, checked in and had a beer and soup for €8. The night before in Czech we had dinner by this amazing river. We each had a bottle of red wine , a massive meal and pancakes for 250 crowns which is about €8 as well. We left prague a couple of days ago, went to Plzen which is the home of pilsner beer. Went to the pilsner urquell brewery which was cool. Also went to the 3rd largest synagogue in the world. Very beautiful, nice and simple and not so ornate. After that we headed down to Cesky Krumlov, we had to stand the whole way because we got ... read more

We made our first trip Tuesday to the Danube Valley. It began with a boat ride along the Blue Danube River, which, surprisingly enough was not blue. I heard it normally is but because of the amount of rainfall it was just an ugly brown : ( The boat took us to the medieval village of Durnstein where we hiked up to twelfth-century castle ruins that overlook the Danube. I must say it was a pretty intense hike leaving me quite parched when I finally made it back down to the bottom. After we hiked up the mountain (well…what I would call a mountain, but considering the Swiss Alps are nearby I don’t think anyone else would) we went to have lunch in Gottweig. As the buses were driving along I looked up on this hill ... read more

The flight over went off without a hitch. I must say when I landed in Vienna I was quite relieved to be directed to buses that would take me to Gaming. The entire summer I was under the impression that in order to get to Gaming I had to take a train from the airport and then Gaming was a forty-five minute walk from the train station…with all my luggage. Needless to say, I was a bit concerned, but I figured since so many students had done it in the past I would more than likely survive the arduous journey. However, a few days before leaving the U.S. Johanna cleared up all my confusion. From Gaming to the train station is a forty-five minute walk that you have to make when you travel on the weekends. ... read more

We arrived in Vienna at 4.30am in the morning, checked out bags into a locker and headed down town. Its lovely walking around a city at this early hour, no-one about, no traffic, no tourists, it was beautiful. But we had to kill a few too many hours until the Information Centre opened at 9am and we were pretty tired from the bus journey. But we made it ... well gareth slept in Starbucks for a couple of hours while I tried my best to stay awake by drinking tons of coffee and so we wouldn t get thrown out. We checked into our campsite in the morning which was a little outside the city but in a beautiful spot along the Danube river. Was very relaxing and lovely few days as we just chilled out, ... read more
