Well today we took a bus to Innsbruck. I'ts not far, about 40 min. For me Innsbruck is too touristy. Bus loads of tours from all over. You will see in some of the images it gets crowded? So we did that and then escaped back to the beautiful peaceful valley we came from. We have 2 more days here. We leave Mon. but we're not sure which direction we will go. Depends on the weather. We have reservations in the Italian Dolomites on Sept 4th. There is some forcast for bad weather south of us so we will try to avoid that ? Here are some pictures from Innsbruck today. Sorry about all the building images but what can you do, your in the city ? Lowell... read more

Finally Swarovski World. Purchased a 24 hour pass with the Innsbruck Card to go out to Swarovski World at Wattens. Next bus due to leave at 10.20 am and we had an hour and twenty minutes to fill in so walked into city centre for a look around. When we had booked to come here I was having a look at pictures on the internet and the buildings reminded me of the song "Little Boxes". As we were walking along the street the lyrics hit me again: "There's a green one and a pink one, and a blue one and a yellow one" (see picture below). OK, I know they are not exactly little boxes, nor are they made of ticky tacky, but you get what I mean... Pretty place with so much detail on the ... read more

I didn't want a thirty minute walk to the hostel after yet another unexpected hike at Neuschwanstein but that is exactly what I got. My hostel in Innsbruck wasn't the most conveniently located and it is on long, tiring walks like this at night, when you're tired, hungry, dirty and cold, that you really wish you were home. Archaic Sunday trading laws have to change too; there was no place still open and selling food at 8pm - hardly past anyone's bedtime. Luckily I still had a massive loaf of sweet raisin bread that I had bought in Fussen. To top things off, I had managed to pick up a cold too; I would normally have jumped at the free breakfast included in the price of my stay but I was just too tired to get ... read more

I confess, today was a very lazy day for us. Our last day in Innsbruck and Austria altogether, and there wasn't much we desperately wanted to do. All that remained on our list was visiting Ambras Castle and Olympiaworld, and do a little bit of shopping. Like yesterday, we were in no hurry to leave the hotel. We had breakfast down in the restaurant again, which is expensive, but we came with a lot of money here (well, not a lot, but more than we needed) so we were able to afford the breakfast here everyday. After that, we rested up in our hotel and finished off getting ready before heading out for the bus that would take us up to Ambras Castle On our very first day in Innsbruck, I had seen a sign pointing ... read more

There's so much that we already love about Innsbruck. From its small town feel to the mountainous backdrop that is visible no matter where you go. It's so stunning here, and absolutely nothing like anywhere in Australia. The first thing we noticed upon opening the windows this morning were the mountains. They quite literally surround Innsbruck in every direction. The cloud and mist this morning just added to the feeling that we had entered a place that we would truly love. When we checked in yesterday, we had organised with the hotel staff that breakfast today would be added on to our hotel charge. After the mishap with rooms it seemed that she had forgotten to transfer that information over. It didn't matter too much, I don't think. They still let us eat, anyway! The breakfast ... read more

We have made it to Innsbruck, but not without a few mishaps on the way. This will probably be a rather short blog due to two things: we spent most of the day at the airport and it seems that the better the hotel you stay at the more difficult accessing and using the Wifi is. Well, where shall I begin? We woke to a very white Vienna today. It seemed that overnight the snow had continued to fall, leaving the ground a good 2-3 centimetres thick as you walked. After enjoying our last breakfast at the Zeitgeist Hotel we made our way to the hop on hop off bus. Our flight wasn't until the afternoon, so we had a few hours to kill and the zoo was the last thing on our list before we ... read more

Another day of "work" checking out a few things. This time we went to Innsbruck to arrange for our group to visit the Swarovski Crystal shop. As the "Kristlalwelten" in Wattens is closed until mod 2015 - all groups now have to visit the store in Innsbruck - which means it will get a little crowded at times. Buyers will be disappointed as the store does not have anywhere near the range of product that was on offer in Wattens. Have to report that there is absolutely no snow in the Inn Valley - and this means no snow in Innsbruck. The locals and the store-keepers do not mind this - as it usually means more business as skiers now spend more time shopping instead of having to travel to the nearby glaciers to get on ... read more

I'm sitting at home and finally got my blog running. The decision was made to write it in english in order to make it available for everybody. My Parents have a capable translator at home and for the parents in law it is a challenge i like to pose. They try to improve their english at the moment, so this should be good practice. Tomorrow we head to Japan. My girlfriend will stay for 3 and I for 5 weeks. Why is she leaving earlier? She has to attend university classes and I'm going to engage in lots of kendo for the last two weeks in Fukuoka, which were organised by Shinsuke Murakami, who helps me very patiently to improve my kendo. Our emotions switch between pleasant anticipation and nervousness. This time I'm the only ... read more

Day 37: Innsbruck. I took a train through Switzerland with my face pressed to the window. Mountains and lakes and blue skies. Beautiful. I also ate Swiss chocolate because always. I got to Innsbruck and my couchsurfer met me at the train station. We went back to his flat, and I made lecso, which is a Hungarian dish. It tasted like home. And it was finally healthy non-carby food. Thank god. By the time we finished dinner it was late, so we went to bed. Day 38: Innsbruck. TODAY I HIKED AN ALP. I woke up, had breakfast, and tried to google hikes in Innsbruck. Seriously, why is it so difficult? My couchsurfer pointed me in a good direction to find trails, but he doesn't do a lot of hiking. On my way to a place, ... read more
