Olin ostanut jo Suomesta lipun klo 12.03 Graziin lahtevaan junaan. Vasta paakadulta loysin tutun Austria Bankin automaatin. Keskustaan kavellessani poikkesin kahvilla. Oopperatalon edessa oli menossa ralliajo. Ilokseni huomasin etta ydinkeskustassa sai ajaa ilmaiseksi ratikalla 3 pysakinvalia. Olisin muuten kylla ostanut lipun ja ajanut kokemuksen vuoksi jonkin patkan ratikalla. Kavin syomassa vanhassakaupungissa. Sitten hetken mielijohteesta kiipesin maelle. En sitten ehtinyt enaa ajoissa ottamaan kuvaa erikoisesta sillasta. Hotellin laheinen nettila oli taynna 45 minuuttia ennen sulkemista, joten menin takaisin keskustaan toiseen paikkaan, jossa kerkesin olla 20 minuuttia. Yhteys Travelblogiin ei toiminut. I left Nove Zamky today and headed off to Graz, Austria and it was a nice day until I got about 30 miles out of Bratislava and it started pouring buckets of rain. It was insane worst rain I had encountered along my whole trip and I really wanted to stop in Bratislava and see the city but the rain was so bad I didn’t want to go around navigating in it because it is a pain in the butt when you have no clear place to go just wandering around. So I decided to just carry on with my ride to Graz and now I have an excuse to come back to Slovakia. I took a pretty nice ride along the way it was very scenic and that is what I was looking for so ... read more

Ossiach, Friesach, Graz in Austria 19 and 20 July 2013 After leaving Slovenia, going through Italy for a short distance then entering Austria, it reminded us how beautiful Austria is also. It’s features are the mountains (snow fields) and the major cities. We drove through Villach, Feldkinchen, St Veit an der Glan and then onto Friesch where we stopped for a few hours. Friesach is known for its old, moated town. We drove into the town at 12MD and it was extremely quiet. We parked in the town’s main square and found the Information Centre. They gave us a map so off we went. We saw the Palace which was now being used as a theatre, the castle, which is now a restaurant and museum at the top of the hill, and many different ruins. The ... read more

Because the road and rail is closed between Obertraun and Bad Aussee, Larry took us and our bikes to a top of a hill near Bad Aussee where he would pick us up later in the day. The start was ominous in that the first few kilometres was downhill flat out - which meant we had to bike up it later in the day. Once we arrived at Altaussee, we took the R61 bike trail to Blaa Alm which was several kilometres up a valley to a ski field, through forest and on to open meadow. It seems to be a popular place in the weekend with many cyclists and motor bikers coming and going. Coming back down to the ski lift we had lunch and headed back down to the lake of Altausseer See where ... read more

Today I walked to the village and did a grocery shop, bought a new skiing jacket, and some ingredients for Apfel Strudl and a roast of some Fleish I thought was beef. Walked the five kilometres home, very slowly, the weight of the groceries was mental, and I had to walk through the snow and ice. Found my way home, and as most of you will know, I don't cook, so Alfred mostly made the strudl for me, and I acted as his assistant (well, I did the dishes). We didn't have the roast I was going to prepare, partly because it ended up being turkey, and secondly we went out on an excursion to the local Höhle (cave) open only once a year for visitors. This cave has a story to tell, a man went ... read more

Our first skiing lesson with the professionals on the baby slope. Two disappointing things - firstly, I had two women teaching me, and secondly, I was with a group of three and four year olds. I worked hard, but mostly helped the girls pick up the little people. Finally Thomas came to the rescue and taught me a whole lot and now I am ready for the Loser (a very steep alpine mountain in Alt Aussee. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=duCbmgBbZUQ Loved every second and think I'll probably be in the next winter olympics, representing Australia. Had dinner at home with cousins, Reinhart, Sabine, Tobias and Laura.... read more

Departed from the hotel in Vienna this morning and had früstück (breakfast) at a traditional cafe. Great coffee, freshly baked cake, servings the size of a medium corgi. Oddly contemporary toilets however - clear glass cubicles and doors - completely transparent - until you lock the door and a sensor clouds the glass. Quite disconcerting but sehr fantastiche. Collected Isabella from her mother and grandmother who resides in an inner city apartment with the most stylish (and wealthy) taste in Persian rugs, carved mirrors, chandeliers and more. Wien chic. Drove home through the Danube Valley, and you know what!? It really was blue. Apparently quite an odd sight but the weather was perfect, clear skies and the blue was reflected on the water. Such a sight to behold. Passing by the Stift Melk (or Melk Abbey), ... read more
