Anybody understand that? One more time: I thought that I've been in Austria now for more than 5 months, so you all should understand German well, because I've learnt so much. How'd it be if wrote to you all in German? Good, right? I think so. Alright, maybe not. Anyways, since your eyes last grazed this page, hanging on my every word, wishing you were all me , much has happened, even if it might not seem so. I've basically been locked up in my room for the last few days, doing agonizing ... read more

Servus, It’s a snowy Groundhog Day’s morning, so I figured I should let you all know that happyhaps here, and also say Happy Birthday to Rachel. Since we last spoke, it has been an absolutely crazy few weeks here in Österreich. The semester officially ended on Friday, the 30th, and with that came weeks of exams and minimal sleep and everyone freaking out about 25% from having our exams in German, and about 75% because a lot of the people were heading home. One night right in the heart of exams, ESN decided to throw a going away party at one of the clubs here in Graz, with the theme of Karneval . Since it would probably be the last time we got to see a lot of people, of course we all decided to go, ... read more

Greetings all! I know it's been kind of a while since I've written, so I'll try to catch you up on what's been going on. The squirrel (aka Julie) left last Wednesday at the crack of dawn in Vienna. We pretty much just hung out for the week in Graz, and she got to meet my friends here. I took her down to Slovenia for a day, and then she also got a crash tour of Vienna the afternoon before she left. I ended up taking the train at 5:50 in the morning on Wednesday back to Graz, arriving at about 8:20, and then had my oral final in Czech at 1 o'clock. It was a long day overall, but fun...and I also got the Austrian equivalent to an A in Czech, which I am quite ... read more

Greetings all. I'm back in Austria after an exhausting but fun 9 days in Italia. Since Julie is currently sitting on my bed and most likely very, very bored, I'm going to skip the pleasantries and get right to it. After spending two of the most depressing days in Graz ever (the city was literally EMPTY, nobody was in my apartment, I had nobody to play with, it was sad), I caught the train at 8:30 at night and headed south, destination: Florence. After 10 long hours on the train with various co-travelers in my compartment, I finally knew I was in Italy when 2 women sat down in my cart and I smelt nothing. Then, 3 men joined us, and I was overwhelmed by the amount of 3 different types of cologne. After finally making ... read more

I'm not sure if I've already told this story, so you'll get to hear it again. One night last week, I decided to take a shower. I know, you're shocked. Kristy is probably squealing with glee about making a joke that I'm dirty or gross or should shower more often. I know you too well. Anywho, the lightswitch for the shower-room is outside of the room, so we like to play a game in my apartment of, "make so and so take a shower in the dark." It usually only lasts for a few seconds, maybe a minute , before the person caves and turns the light back on. Well, on said night, I was in the midst of shampooing when the lights went out for me. I didn't think much of it, and went on ... read more

It's a pretty sad time right now in Graz. Yesterday was most people's last day of school before our Christmas vacation, mine included, so now I'm officially on break until January 6th. For most of the Americans here, it was their last day of European school ever. Since our university schedule in the US is so far off from the rest of the world's, the American kids staying here only for a semester have to leave in the coming weeks to be back in the US for spring semester. Since I don't hang out with any Americans really, it doesn't really affect me. However, Dietlinde, one of the few I am friends with, was only here for a semester, and so last night she, Libor, Elizabeth, Meghan and I went out to dinner as a send-off, ... read more

I'm writing to you on the eve of my department to the one, the only, Salzburg, Austria! And it now occurs to me that it's almost midnight, we're catching the train at 8am tomorrow, and I have yet to pack. Oh well, might as well waste some time on this. Been pretty lowkey since we last spoke, just doing work and hanging out. Officially skipped my second class in my entire college career today. A big group of us last night went to the Kunsthaus where we've been known to Salsa dance on Saturday nights. I know, I know, you're certainly saying, "But Matthew, you are a diligent student, what are you doing out until 2am on a school night when you had class at 9am the next day?" What can I say, when in...well, Graz. ... read more

Last night after I got back from school, I looked at my mailbox and I had a note from the Doorman waiting for me, "I have for you a post." This morning, I went and paid the Doorman a little visit, and got a nice package from Nanbo & Grumpi. The part I got the biggest kick out of, though, was that on the customs declaration form, our Poopsie claimed absolutely everything inside, eliminating the element of surprise but giving me quite the laugh. Anyways, I received some small gifts and whatnot that I haven't yet opened, and Nanny also packed in a small artificial tree, so I have that sitting on my desk right now with the gifts around it. It's a quaint Christmas set-up, as Libor and I are still trying to figure out ... read more

It's been a crazy and hectic weekend, but overall a good one. Friday night I just laid low. Didn't really have anything to do or anyone to play with. Thomas was off with the Frenchies , and Libor had his volleyball class and went out with some of the people from it after. I ended up going for a little tour of the city on my own, as it was heavily snowing and I wanted to see everything lit up for Christmas with the snow. It was really really nice, and we ended up getting several inches of snow. I also ended up hanging out with Martyna and Agata for a little, which was fun, though difficult when they'd randomly start talking to each other in Polish. Oh well. Saturday morning we were up at the ... read more

Grüßi. Though I talked to several of you yesterday, I figured I'd update this thing with some more information, etc. Yesterday in Austria was....totally normal. It was very odd because I knew it was Thanksgiving but it didn't feel like it. I slept in, hung out for the morning and afternoon, and then went to class at 3. Not terribly exciting. However, since it was a holiday , I decided to take the day off and do absolutely no homework. It was a beautiful day. As I've said before, the Americans can't play well with others. I'm considered very odd that I don't hang out with Americans (or native English speakers), and that I'm taking regular university classes, not the easy ones designed for the Americans. Since I'm sure to get some comments saying I'm bashing ... read more
