Geo: 47.8, 13.0333Happy birthday to our beautiful girl - sweet sixteen!! She is smart, beautiful and our peacemaker - always caring and loving. What a special place to celebrate this special birthday. Grandad had given the kids a day of tours in Salzburg for Christmas - first to the Salt mines at Berchtesgaden (just over the border into Germany) and then the Sound of Music tour in the afternoon. What a wonderful day!!We joined the bus trip at Mirabellplatz, and Walter our guide entertained us with stories and anecdotes about Salzburg and the surrounding countryside until we stopped at Bad Reichenhall, the turnoff to Eagles Nest. Hitler loved this area and had a house/palace here, and for his 50th birthday, the Nazi party built him the Eagles Nest - a stunning mountain-top retreat. Unfortunately, Hitler was ... read more

Geo: 47.8, 13.0333My Birthday Salzburg 29/12/16"I am Sixteen..."I was very spoilt by my wonderful family this morning, some highlights being "Your Keys to Driving - Learning to Drive in Queensland" and a timeturner from the boys. We then had a delicious breakfast at the hotel, including cake as part of the buffet. Then we set off on a day of tours. For Christmas, Grandad had given us a tour of the Saltmines, just outside Salzburg, and the sound of music tour.We started off with the Saltmines Tour. We loaded on to a bus in Mirabel Place, and set off into Germany. First we stopped at a viewing spot, under Hitler's Eagle's Nest. We were very excited to see all the fresh snow from the day before. Then we stopped in the small town of Berchtesgaden, which ... read more

Geo: 47.8, 13.0333The kids have been hoping, wishing and praying to experience falling snow- we didn't get a white Christmas in 2013 or 2016....but today in Salzburg, guess what happened!!!!Recapping - we arrived at 8pm last night and hauled our selves and our bags to our cute hotel in the pedestrian zone, under the Capuchin hill at Hotel Trumer Stube. Rooms were not as tiny as we feared, and at least had normal sized beds (the doubles in Munich were not double sized! Fine if you're in love, less fine if you're sharing with your brother!). A nice breakfast and then out into what at first seemed like light rain...but then we noticed that the snow stuck to our jackets (and nose and eyelashes, as the song goes!)We walked through Mirabell Gardens - frankly, not their ... read more

Geo: 47.8, 13.0333Salzburg 28/12/16"Snowflakes that stay on my nose and eylashes!"We started with a lovely breakfast at the hotel. Then set off on "Dad's walking tour of Salzburg". First stop was Mirabell Gardens, where many scenes from Sound of Music were filmed. Unfortunately, they are dead in Winter and many parts of the garden are closed. Then we walked up to a Capuchin Monastery on a hill, overlooking Salzburg. We were very excited when it started to snow! Then we walked along the snowy streets of Salzburg, crossing Mozart bridge. We had a delicious hot chocolate at a café, that's Benn there since 1703, then walked around Residenz Place. We then went inside the Residenz State rooms and looked down to the Cathedral from the Choir Loft, where Mozart played the organ. We also saw Rembrants's ... read more

Without a doubt today was one of the surprises of the trip. We had intended to stay on board but changed our mind and instead opted to tour Salzburg and do the Sound of Music tour - and I am so pleased we did. Our tour guide, Sebastian, should be awarded Local Tour Guide of the Year. Dressed in traditional Barvarian costume (vest, coat, knee length lederhousin, and knee high leather boots) was so entertaining. On the 1.5 hour bus ride entertained us all the way, both the historical information and amusing stories. He could not for the life of him understand why so many people liked the movie The Sound of Music. On reaching Salzburg (which is an amazing city - so clean and fresh), Sebastian took us on a walking tour through the city, ... read more

Geo: 47.8005, 13.0444Good night sleep until the bells of the church rang 100 times at 6:00am -- obviously time to get up!Breakfast was included with our room so we enjoyed a typical bread, cheese, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt, cereal and pastry breakfast. You would think there would be something there Brennan would enjoy, but for some reason he was not a fan. He went back to the room without eating, complaining of an upset stomach. G&G enjoyed a nice breakfast. We made him a ham and cheese sandwich for later. We stopped once again at the larger hotel to check email and headed out to Partnachklamm, a hiking trail through a gorge. We did not have time to spend 1-1/2 hours doing the circuit hike nor the desire to spend over 10 Euro to hike through the ... read more

It's been awhile since I have had to take a shuttle between destinations - I believe that the last time I did it was all the way back in Guatemala. Cesky Krumlov to Salzburg is quite a popular route for tourists to take so I was surprised that there was no direct bus service - or even a direct train. The gap has therefore been filled by about three or four companies operating shared mini-vans for fairly extortionate prices. And since the majority of tourism in these parts is made up mainly of wealthier Asian tourists, they are prepared to pay these prices. In my case, I didn't have a choice. I did enjoy the three-hour service however. The van was nice, new and comfortable and the driver even let me put on my tunes on ... read more

Travelling to Innsbruck. Stopped in very picturesque Salzburg. Salz meaning salt and burg meaning castle. Unfortunately being in the alps often means rain, and it did but we still got a look at the town and a walkabout. This is where they filmed the sound of music, which we had playing on the way. This was great because it was a reminder of what we saw and where each scene was. What we didn't know was the real Maria had a very small appearance in the movie. On our way to Innsbruck, we briefly passed thru a check point into Germany and then back into Austria. It was the quickest way to go, however it was very well guarded as they were checking every truck and bus for illegal migrants. That is the first real boarder ... read more

Geo: 47.8005, 13.0444 We awoke to mist and clouds covering the Alps. On a cold, rainy Pennsylvania day, this might have sucked. But the view here was almost ... natural. We had learned from talking to some folk in these here parts that for this time of year. It is natural. Once all awake we spent a lazy lazy Monday morning just hanging at the cottage. Around 11 we decided that we wanted to see more than just misty mountains so we headed out. On the way out we stopped at the store to pick up breakfast for tomorrow. Waking up to a house with no food kind of sucks. It's not lost on me that this is the norm for way too many people in the world :-(Visiting a grocery in story is, for the ... read more

Geo: 47.4392, 13.522After a nearly flawless flight, aside from a little turbulence over the North Atlantic, we began our decent towards Munich. It was dawn as I lifted the window shade and peered down onto the United Kingdom .... just in time to see Norwich, Lowestoft, Bungay, Ipswich, and London way off in the distance. As the plane transitioned from our cruising altitude of 39,000 ft the cabin lights came on and, being the high fallutin first class travelers we know are, were served breakfast. Quiche (of course) with a fruit cup. Coffee, orange juice, and I'm assuming more booze if you wanted. I'm not a morning boozer so .... Than again it was just past midnight back in PA so I technically could have but ..... I digress...... and then. Before I knew it. There ... read more
