I took Mom to the airport in Zurich, then rode the train to Salzburg and visited the home of "the Sound of Music," and then on Sunday, I went to Eisreisenwelt, the largest accessible ice caves. This tour caused me to miss my train and I spent the night waiting for the next train and barely making it back to school in time for work breakfast duty at school.... read more

We spent the day in Salzburg at the Salt Mines. They were a lot of fun. You have to dress up like a moron, but the big slide inside the mine was fun! F.Y.I. It is a salt mine, so if you touch the walls, don't put your fingers in your mouth. Sadly I learned this the hard way. Don't ask me why I had my fingers in my mouth. All I know is that it didn't taste good.... read more

Bad Gastein is a comfortable resort town that works well for those on a backpacking circuit who just want to be in the mountains and do day hikes. It's always a bit defeating to get to take a long hike to the top of a mountain only to see ski lifts, but the views were impressive and the air was fresh.... read more

In order to find out if two people are good partners, they should be forced to go from train station to train station at strange hours where no buses or English language or hotel rooms are available. We left London after a week of sleeping on Martin's floor (not too bad, really) and took the train to Dover, then the ferry to Calais, France. We were fortunate enough to be able to see the delicate light of the sunset reflect off the famous White Cliffs which jut right down into the sea. When we arrived in Calais, however, we had missed the last bus to the train station. We asked a ticket agent what we should do and he generously offered use of the floor space until 5am. Since we were prepared with foam mats and ... read more

Day 25 Friday, July 26, 1997 I love Friday’s. Sure, it is still pissing rain outside but I have a cheery backpacker’s attitude and a trusty raincoat ready to take on the deluge. Ok Ok. Forget all that whining and blathering about getting soaked in Prague. Nope. This is a good rain. Everything is different. The air smells different. It is fresh. Clean. Cool. Rejuvenating. My morning began with one of the best breakfasts I have enjoyed so far. The menu: several slices of hot fresh bread, hearty scoops of tasty marmalade, chunks of rich cheddar cheese and generous slabs of ham…and the cherry on top of my delectable treat…. a bottomless mug of hot coffee. Mmmmmm-Mmmmm. Simply incomparable. Looking around at my fellow diners, I noticed that my female friends were nowhere to be seen. ... read more

Day 24 Thursday, July 24 Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a great place for a curious traveller like me to visit.....for a day. If the town didn’t have that spectacular Medieval Criminal Museum, I am certain I could have been off the train, walked around town and back on the trail and off to anywhere in about an hour. Also, if I happened to visit on a day tarnished with clusters of dark clouds or sputtering rains, the place would probably not be worth visiting at all. However, I enjoyed myself while I was there and now it was time to go. Thus, as I sat in the cafeteria surrounded by cackling krauts and crunching on a mouthful of Quaker Harvest Oats cereal I pondered my next move. With the bible at hand, I picked the ... read more

The train was passing through Salzburg, but not terminating there so we had to be careful to make sure that we woke up in time. We didn’t, but luckily the train was running late and we hadn’t missed our stop. The train still arrived at some ungodly hour in the morning, so everyone settled down in the station for another kip until the sun came up. The station was literally covered with inter-railers. Salzburg was a beautiful city, set in the heart of the beautiful Austrian countryside. Like Vienna, there were photo opportunities everywhere. The dominant feature in the city is a large castle on top of a huge hill. We were too tight to pay for the cable car, which would take you all the way up to the castle, so we had to walk. ... read more

In October 1978 Linda and Bob attended a weekend church retreat with Steve and Kay and their boys in Berchtesgaden, in the German Alps just across the border from Salzburg, Austria. We stayed at another AFRC resort, the General Walker Hotel, which was used by Hitler’s elite guard force when he stayed here. We took a tour of the bunkers under the hotel. We also explored the surrounding countryside, to include the salt mines, the Ramsau church, and the Konigseesee, where we took an electric boat to an onion domed chapel on the far end. The mountains were those seen in the opening scene of the “Sound of Music,” and were just so beautiful with the first snowfall of the season. We also went to Salzburg to see where the "Sound of Music" was filmed.... read more
