Salzburg is gorgeous!! Home of the film Sound of Music and Mozart's birthplace. The leaves are changing colors and the many lakes complete the perfect scenary. Went on an ultra touristy S.O.M. tour (yes, and I also saw Riverdance in Dublin). I saw all the places they filmed the movie and, randomly, the headquarters of Redbull energy drink. Interesting stuff. The RB headquarters are in a small town outside of Salzburg in the middle of no where. The lakes and town are incredibly beautiful here. I would highly recommend this place if you like peaceful towns with great architecture and history (and movie trivia : ) ... read more

With the sound of Rachel and me! Laughing, that is - we had such a great reunion. She met me at the train station and we trolled around Old Salzburg in the rain, eating and having coffee and talking a mile a minute. Zipping through the Austrian countryside via train was beautiful. There were low-hanging clouds and forests that are the stuff of fairytales. Coming into Salzburg I caught a glimspe of the mountains - Rach's "alpity alps" - real mountains, jagged and snow-capped and ancient-looking in the cloudy dusk. On Friday Rachel had class, so I explored the old city on my own, enjoying the beautiful (baroque) churches, squares and elaborate fountains. I particularly enjoyed the water spouting from the statue-horses' noses, with the clipclop of horse feet from the real horses, drawing carriages right ... read more

Salzburg, the name comes from Salz (salt) and burg (castle) of which the Hohensalzburg Fortress over looks the city and has provided for its protection since 1077. The Salz or salt comes from the salt mines located not far from Salzburg and was the source of its wealth. Although famous for the birthplace of Mozart and the film “The Sound of Music”, Salzburg has been around a long time. Steeped in history, Salzburg was controlled by the Roman Empire around 150 B.C. until the barbarian invasions laid waste to the city. It remained in ruin until about A.D. 700 when it was given to Bishop Rupert by Bavaria. The city was rebuilt and remained an independent state until the arrival of Napoleon around 1800. Salzburg was able to avoid the many ravages of wars until World ... read more

So, on the bus yesterday from Vienna to Salzburg my mind was pre-occupied with a radical new plan. Mel (whom I met in Morocco) said that Joelene had never cancelled her accommodation at Oktoberfest and it was up for grabs. Since I, truly, can't be bothered taking trains around Switzerland by myself, and David is quite right in saying I'm nts for being nextdoor to Oktoberfest and not going, I decided to scrap Switzerland and head to Munich instead! I hadn't had any desire to go there but now that I'm going, I'm super excited! Anyway, we're staying at YOHO Hostel in Salzburg, land of The Sound of Music, and David and I got a double room here. We set off right away on a free walking tour, which definitely beat Salzburg for the worst ... read more

Well I’m sure many of you are thinking that I’ve been slacking on journaling about my travels. But the real, honest truth is that things have been insanely busy on this side of the world. Not only do I find myself buried in school work but I’m also on sensory overload. There are so many new things and I’ve had so many cultural experiences, all of which have been fun and amazing, but at the same time they can be very draining because of the time it takes to process everything. But enough of that and on to the exciting stuff. The weekend before last (September 10-11), I went to Salzburg. Salzburg is a fun and exciting city where the Sound of Music was filmed. Apart from the postcards though, you would never know this. To ... read more

Due to train scheduling issues, we had to write Prague out of our travel agenda, but on the upside we are spending an extra day in Austria so we got the chance to visit Salzburg! On the train over to Salzburg we read about "The Official Sound of Music Tour" and we happened to be arriving at about the time it started, so we decided to try it out (plus it meant we get to sit on a bus all day rather than following a map to find our way around!). The movie, "The Sound of Music", was filmed mainly in Salzburg so the tour went all around Salzburg and also visited some towns outside of Salzburg. We saw the house that was supposedly the Von Trapp family house (Leopoldskron Castle), took pictures with the pavillion ... read more

Just got into Austria after a crappy 3 hour doze overnight in Stansted airport. I busked in the London underground for 3 hours last night near the parliament houses and Big Ben. I only made one lousy pound, but the acoustics were great! And no coppers bugging me either! Had a bit of a busk here just now as well, but Europeans don't seem to know what it means... either that or I just suck... :P The weather here is beautiful and I'm heading off again in an hour down to Slovenia to meet Ash & Alaya! FINALLY! Their van is apparently up and running again so it will be peace love and wurst for all! (do they have wurst in Slovenia? ...i'm not sure...) Anyway, this is pretty much just a post to prove that ... read more

Hi All, Our trip to Salzburg has gone very well so far. We stopped off at the Swarovski Crystal factory in Innsbruk on the way here. It was a futuristic artistic version of crystal formation. Didn't learn very much but felt very cultured by the end. The shop was the most interesting though. Arrival in Salzburg was hectic and typically European wild driving on narrow streets with pedestrians, bikes, cars and buses all competing for the same 3 ft of space. Our friendly on board navigator insisted we could drive down a one way to reach our hotel. We finally had to gag her and find it ourselves; fortunately double parking is a way of life here. Our hotel is just across the river from the old city of Salzburg. The streets of Salzburg actually do ... read more

Jenee and I are now in Salzburg. We spent about 6 days in Berlin. It was surprisingly cold and rainy. We got around town using the local train system. The highlight if you could call it that was a exceptionally done tour given by Paul's roommate, Edo to a concentration camp. We stayed in East Berlin where most studetns live and experience some of the pop culture. Edo and Paul's other roommate Stephka really personalized our experience. On Monday we traveled by train to a medievil walled city-- Rothenburg. We stayed in the home of a local just outside the wall. The town is storybook like. The highlight was a trip to the Crime and Punishment Museum! When I get it together I'll post a photo of the "Tongue Screw!" Another highlight was the "Night Watchman" ... read more
