Yes, The Sound of Music is everywhere in Salzburg. As a matter of fact, our hostel plays the film every few hours or so for the guests. I'm sure the workers there LOVE that! Haha. For any Sound of Music fans out there, go to Salzburg and take the tour! Because I've never actually seen the movie, I did not choose to pay the 30 Euros ($35?) to take the tour. Salzburg has breathtaking views of the mountains, which look *similar* to the mountains here in Colorado, only sharper and taller. It's very green here, too. With the cobblestone streets (which are actually all over the place in Europe) and small houses, it's a very cute city, and I haven't discovered any places at all that seem run down and such. Some people here are ... read more

It was definitely a day for laughing. And crying. I can't really recount it all here, it just doesn't work that way. But I do know that when Boonie and I found ourselves on the way home on the train at ten pm devouring mini bottles of Vodka from the train dining cart, it had been one of my better days out. So the significance of holding the rod? Sorry, it's not as dirty as you'd like to think it is. I simply asked a gentleman who was fishing on the lake at dusk if I may hold his rod for a moment - and realised fairly quickly that it hadn't sounded the way it was intended. Etiquette has never been one of my strong points. But it did illicit some laughs from nearby onlookers. Oh ... read more

...was to take the Sound of Music tour. There, I've said it. It's out in the open, it's now available for anyone to see. But I defy ANYONE not to be impressed with the skills of a woman who can make curtains look that good. And Captain Von Trapp. Such a man! So handsome! Swoon... Go on! Get it down from the shelf, dust it off, and pop the ol' VHS tape in. You know you want to. It won't disappoint. I am sixteen, going on seventeen... P.S And Salzburg itself? WUNDERVOLL! (Photos coming soon)... read more

Hi everyone! Connie and I are about to leave Salzburg for Vienna, but we wanted to write about our adventures while we had the chance! The weather here has been up and down - one hour we were really warm in a t-shirt and pants, the next hour I was tempted to put gloves on - but it's so pretty here and everyone is really friendly and hospitable. Here's a recap of our adventures here: Tuesday: After having arrived in Salzurg around 7 pm, we ordered pizza and conked out around 8 pm. It was exhausting but our beds (with those really nice down comforters) were warm and welcoming. Wednesday: After eating a wonderful breakfast of rolls, cheese, ham, coffee, and orange juice, we went into town to check out some things. First stop was Mozart's ... read more

Headed off on our day trip south to Kehlsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest - Hitler's old haunt) and stopped in on Hellbrunn palace where they have a magic water fountain that does lots of funny things but it was out of action because of the weather (cold and drizzly), had breaky at a nice little cafe in Anif. Got to Obersalzburg, nazi barracks and the point where you catch a bus up to Eagle's Nest. Unfortunately the road to Eagles Nest was closed until June 3 - bummer. So had a look around Obersalzburg where there exists the original bunker complex, pretty cool. Had lunch there and admired the beautiful mountain scenery. Got back to Salzburg and walked around the old town and caught the funiculated (or whatever) tram up to the fortress and wnet on a tour ... read more

Hi everyone! This is going to be really quick and there aren't any pictures on here yet. Boo. But I just wanted everyone know that Connie and I got in safely and that we are having a good time! The weather is really cold and dreary, but the mountains everywhere kinda make it all better. Our journey to Salzburg was adventurous (to say the least), and we were completely wiped out by the time we came to Salzburg. Munich was a whirlwind (I do have a couple of picture from that, but I'll put them up later) and the train ride to Salzburg was exhilerating (beautiful scenery). By the time we got to our cute country hotel in Groedig, we were done. We ordered some pizza, watched German sitcoms (The Nanny in German! Ha!), and literally ... read more

Spent the morning at Plzen - the origin of Pilsener beers - and had lunch at the Pilsener Urquell brewery, had a bit of a look around and bought a few beeros direct from the brewer himself (well the old lady in the shop at the brewery). Then we were just in transit mode to Salzburg. The countryside became alot prettier as we saw our first mountains with snow on the peaks - just a little different from the hills we have in Australia. Dinner in the hotel restaurant - schnitzel for me and it was bloody good.... read more

Well we survived another overnight train ride from Rome to Salzburg, Austria after spending a good 7 hours in Rome doing laundry and killing time before our 10 pm departure for Austria...We squeezed like sardines in our couchette and woke up at 6 am to the most beautiful snow capped mountains and bavarian looking villages in Austria. We have spent the past two days in Salzburg, the home of Mozart and The Sound of Music. IT IS GORGEOUS AND SO CLEAN AND PEACEFUL here--a major change from Rome! I caved in today and participated in my first organized tour--specifically for cheesy tourists--Blair, ALyssa and I took the Sound of Music tour and it was worth every penny. We rode around in a big white bus with about 30 other tourists listening to the Sound of Music ... read more

Still we find ourselves in Salzburg. We came here with the intention of staying for 17 hours, that was 8 days ago. The hostels slogan is even Easy To Find, Hard To Leave. We did infact try to leave a few days ago: We arose quite early and finally made it to the kitchen for the Austrian breakfast that we had heard so much about but had consistently failed to be awake for. After the usual packing and checking out we head off to the nearby train station for the 3 hour journey to Vienna, with our ultimate destination being Krakow in Poland where we both very keen to see the infamous Auchwitz. Vienna has 2 main train stations: Westbahnhof and Südbahnhof. The train from Salzburg arrived into Westbahnhof so we had to get a U-Bahn ... read more
