Nested along the Salzach river and amongst the Alps lies the town of Salzburg, Austria. As far as towns go, I would reccomend this place without any hesitations. As a small town (about one hundred and fifty thousand people), it lacks the big city feel that plauges many otherwise beautiful cities. Perhaps the best part of Salzburg is that the company Red Bull is based nearby (in Fuschl am See), so all the sports teams in Salzburg are called "Red Bull" or "the Red Bulls". For much of its history (from the middle ages until quite recently) the whole province of Salzburg was lead by an archbishop and was an independant political entity, even from the Austro-Hungarian Empire of the nineteenth century. The town's landscape is dominated by an abundance of churches (im serious, theres as ... read more

Back in Salzburg it was more of last weekend's fun: so we spent the evening at the festival in town, drinking beer and sekt and checking out all the locals in the lederhosen. We then headed up to the 'Sky Bar' with Christoph and Claudia where we had cocktails and gazed out at the Festung and old town by night, it was really pretty and a good time. Saturday was more family festivities; this time in Upper Austria with 3 more of my grandmother's half sisters and their husbands. Traffic wasn't so good so we drove through Germany, crazy! Lunch was a traditional one at an inn under the trees. It was a special place for the family as two of the sisters met their husbands here when they were waitresses while their mother ran the ... read more

Our day with the family in Salzburg was great and full of food. We started with breakfast on the terrace of the fluffy cats, admiring the beautiful countryside all around with the green, green fields that stretched on forever and the tree covered hills that headed skyward. There were even a couple of highland cows to entertain us. We met up with the rest of the relatives and headed to a hillside inn just out of Elsbethen for lunch. It had wonderful views over the city and surrounding areas, but not so wonderful singers of folk music. Thankfully the food was fantastic and we tried more of the local grub: blutwurst, sauerkraut, cheeseypasta stuff, strudel, topfenstrudel, straum... it just kept coming. Spent the afternoon exploring the Festung, the Fortress above Salzburg and getting a brief history ... read more

From Pope to convent. We arrived to Salzburg, Austria for a few days of R&R as there was not a whole lot to do here but enjoy the unbelievable picture-postcard scenery. Salzburg lies in a valley. Mountains perched all around. Pastures in the distance. It is separated into New and Old town--Old with the appearance from Mozart's time. With our small, barely furnished room, and the churchbells ringing throughout the night, we feel like we are staying in a convent. Actually, it used to be a hospital. Our window opens out to a narrow cobblestone lane lined with shops and cafes. One of the main attractions is the Hohensalzburg Fortress. Used as the fortress for the archbishop rulers since 1077, it lies on the mountain above the city and towers above all. It was perhaps the ... read more

Our first impression of Salzburg was that it is a very cute city surrounded by beautiful county side. The office at our campground was in a quintessential Alpine house and walking just minutes from our site were spectacular views of farm land, rolling hills, and mountains in the distance. We bought Salzburg cards, which give you free public transportation and admission to many of the sights for a 48 hour period. We started our process of getting the most for our money by taking the funicular (sort of an elevator on rails that go up the side of a hill) up to the Festung Hohensalzburg the fortress that looks down on Salzburg. There were incredible views from the top. The fortress also houses a war museum and marionette museum (creepy!). On the way to lunch we ... read more

Geo: 48.0765, 12.9132Crappy breakfast. Pate and cheese were not good. Ate with the Italian lady and her daughter (the one that helped me with laundry last night). Nice lady, from Torino. Off to Salzburg. Maribell Gardens ... beautiful. Stunning sculptures. Old-town - lively, with a fruit market. Had a burenwurst ... tasty! Kollegiekirche - interesting Baroque style. Mozart's birthplace - boring, but doing something Mozart related is obligatory here. Had a chocolate "Mozart Ball". Unlike the balls that Chef from "South Park" makes, they were not salty chocolate balls. Rather, they were sickly sweet (marzipan?). Continued walking and saw the largest Baroque fountain in the world. Cool. Reminded me of the Bartholdi fountain in Washington, DC, though both are quite different. Went to the "Dom" (cathedral, not an S&M practitioner you sickos!). Just anot... read more

Grüss Gott! In my last entry I talked about Salzburg and a little bit of its history and all that. I’ll talk a little bit more about what I’ve been doing since I got here! The first week was spent auditioning for the teachers and deciding which voice teacher would take which student. We had to pick a 1, 2, and 3rd choice and then after we auditioned, they somehow divided us up based on those choices. Really I think it was just a ploy to be able to hear everyone that was in the program. Either way, we sang.  Let’s see, I am studying with Mary Schiller who is a professor at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She’s very good and I’m glad to be working for her. She has also asked me to ... read more

Guten Tag! Wie Gehts? Ich bin sehr gut! Although this is the beginning of the journal, this is actually the last full week that I will be in Austria. I'm going to begin by basically just saying a little bit about the city and my first experiences here in Austria. The city of Salzburg is just over the German border and is situated in the "hills" as my host family says, but as you will see from my pictures, these hills are really mountains. They are the outskirts of the Alps. The city gets its name from the salt mines that are so previlant in these hills and that is why the town began in the middle ages. Salt, as I'm sure you know, was needed to preserve food, so it was considered very valuable and ... read more
