Leaving Munich for Salzburg today we wanted to find the Nymphenburg Schloss first and have a quick visit, well worth the time spent driving through the Munich traffic. This castle was built as a summer palace for the rulers and was the home of mad King Ludwig, the builder of Neuschwanstein Castle in Fussen. With a 2 hour drive to Salzburg ahead we set off intending to stop and Hitlers Eagles Nest on the way, we did find it perched very high up on the adjacent mountain however due to the ongoing poor weather was closed for access, a bummer really as the view would have been spectacular. On to the hotel in Salzburg and here Pam has outdone herself as we are staying at the Sound of Music Schloss in the adjacent building that has ... read more

Phase 3 Deb and Dan arrive in Salzburg Tuesday May 6 On Saturday I had mentioned to Ross that we should go to the airport and escort Deb and Dan back to the hotel. Then I thought maybe we’d just wait for them at the hotel around 3 pm. Two things changed my mind. 1. The bus route to the airport is one 20 minute bus ride on the #2 bus right from our hotel and we had the week bus pass but the clincher was reason 2. While I was on a wrong bus a kid had a Desigual bag and I mentioned how whenever we came to Europe I would try to find something by them. Well his mom said I should just take the number 2 bus to the outlet mall and check ... read more

Salzburg May 2 to May 9 Friday - Since we had a choice of trains going every half hour to Salzburg I didn’t worry about timing. We arrived at the station and found the right track and the train arrived 10 min. later. Our paper tickets I had printed were scanned with the conductor muttering a lot of German with a neutral face. They were good. Fast, quiet ride with beautiful scenery. Room wasn’t ready at noon so we left our bags and went bus riding and walking in the old town. Picked up Ross’ marathon info and tag. Had a picnic dinner in the room at 9 pm. 11,354 steps Saturday – wow – slept in until 12:16. I checked every watch and clock to be sure of the time. But we had really slept ... read more

Today Mel wanted to see some of the locations from The Sound of Music movie as it was filmed in and around Salzburg. We figured out the buses and got our tickets from hotel (and they weren’t even marked up!) We caught the bus to the city centre and took a guess at the right stop. Why would any city have electric busses? They blot out the sky with a bird’s nest of messy wires and they are still just busses not trams! Ok rant over... First stop was Mirabell gardens and palace where the song Doh, Ray, Me is performed in the movie. The first thing we came to was a playground which Em did NOT want to leave, then we walked through the gardens which are beautiful. We found the fountain and steps from ... read more

Em did not want to leave the sheep but we had to say goodbye and move on to Salzburg. A quick stop at the tourist bureau to confirm the rules for Austrian roads and we were on our way. Most websites were telling us that we needed snow tyres and had to carry chains (neither of which we had) up until 15thof April and that we also needed a sticker to travel on the motorways. Apparently, the snow tyres thing is only for when the roads are actually snowy or icy so we should be fine and the sticker was easy to get at a petrol station – 10 days, 8.50 euro, all roads – better than individual road tolls which can really add up fast. Before heading to Salzburg, we made a stop at Ehrenberg ... read more

Today, it is my birthday! How lucky am I to spend in beautiful Salzburg! The morning started off with a walk with Mum down along the Salzach towards Mirabell Garten. It's a beautiful walk along the river where you can see across into the Old Town and up ahead you can see the castle. Beautiful sights everywhere you look. Mum and I took a stroll through the Mirabell Garten and in front of the Palace there. Very nice gardens which would look absolutely stunning in the spring I reckon. At the other end of the garden you end up at Marketplatz where we found a cute little cafe to grab a coffee. Inside it's cozy and warm and every table has an astray. Mum was astounded that you can smoke in some places as back home ... read more

Packed up by 7.30 am for the last day of our Cosmos tour. Breakfast at the Ramada Salzburg was a rather cramped affair as they were renovating their restaurant. It was the first time we've ever had muesli with choc chips in it! We decided to forego the optional "Sound of Music" Tour and visit some attractions in the Old Centre of Salzburg. After wandering down the cute main "shopping street" we headed for the magnificent Dom (Cathedral) dedicated to Sts Rupert & Virgil. All the churches we've seen in Austria have been very ornate and this was no exception. It was different however, in that it contained an abundance of intricately carved white marble, especially in the archways and on the pillars. Four domes and no less than five organs also contributed to the Salzburg ... read more

Hi Guys Finally have internet again. It is amazing how lost you feel without it! Especially, when you are trying to plan your holiday only a few days in advance! We returned to the Oktoberfest grounds on Wednesday morning (had to try beer from another beer tent). We arrived around 12 and the tent we were in was quiet. We had a table to ourselves for a while and then had an American Couple and their parents sit with us. Lunch today was half a chicken and chips, another stein (litre of beer) for Andrew and an interesting chat with the couples next to us. The husband was in the military and posted to Italy. They gave us advice on where to go in and around Italy, which was really appreciated. After the beer was finished, ... read more

So we drove out of Salzburg in the morning fog and arrived at St. Gilgens at about 10. It was the first of a series of beautiful lakes that we visited that day. We also visited Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, Gosausee and finished off at the Five Fingers lookout in the Dachstein Mountains. We may have visited other places but although we had one more day, we thought it might rain and it did! Actually by the time we drove into Salzburg that evening it was already raining. Anyway, although we had a wondeful day, it is all a bit of a blur. Lucky that we have photos.... read more
