Hi Guys Finally have internet again. It is amazing how lost you feel without it! Especially, when you are trying to plan your holiday only a few days in advance! We returned to the Oktoberfest grounds on Wednesday morning (had to try beer from another beer tent). We arrived around 12 and the tent we were in was quiet. We had a table to ourselves for a while and then had an American Couple and their parents sit with us. Lunch today was half a chicken and chips, another stein (litre of beer) for Andrew and an interesting chat with the couples next to us. The husband was in the military and posted to Italy. They gave us advice on where to go in and around Italy, which was really appreciated. After the beer was finished, ... read more

So we drove out of Salzburg in the morning fog and arrived at St. Gilgens at about 10. It was the first of a series of beautiful lakes that we visited that day. We also visited Bad Ischl, Hallstatt, Gosausee and finished off at the Five Fingers lookout in the Dachstein Mountains. We may have visited other places but although we had one more day, we thought it might rain and it did! Actually by the time we drove into Salzburg that evening it was already raining. Anyway, although we had a wondeful day, it is all a bit of a blur. Lucky that we have photos.... read more

So on to Salzburg we went. We got off to an early start and driving with our map, we took the road we thought was correct, but a lot of it was in such bad shape that it seemed we must have lost our way. When we got to what looked like an industrial town that had been partly abandoned, with ruined buildings inhabited by Gypsies, we decided we must be on the wrong road. Everybody we asked told us to go back. So we did and took a much longer route. (On the way back, with our GPS working, we found ourselves on the same road, meandering through very pretty countryside of lakes and forests. Not many people but many little holiday homes which in September, no longer seemed to be occupied.) We managed to ... read more

Mondsee and Salzburg Austria 27 & 28 July 2013 After leaving Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic, we made our way south again to Austria and on the way to Salzburg. We booked into Camping Nord-Sam which was a very popular spot as it had a little lake where the kids did some fishing, a swimming pool, playground for kids and was obviously a popular spot for families on summer European holidays. We got the 3rd last site. On one side of us was fellow-countrymen (!!!!) from the Netherlands and on the other side was a fellow who was from South Africa but was living and working in Bavaria/Germany and spoke fluent German. We chatted and solved the ‘problems of the world’ as well as many travel stories. The next morning we had several cups of ... read more

As promised in our last blog, we have been enjoying Salzburg for the last several days and believe that it is one of the most interesting and tourist friendly cities that we have toured. Our campground Nord-Sam is large, private with excellent facilities and close to the city. It is 100 m. from a bus stop that connected us with the Central Station (Bahnhof) to then take a bus directly into the Old City. Buses run frequently and on time and are free when purchasing a Salzburg Card. Our experience with this type of card, purchased for 24, 48 or 72 hours is an ideal way to see most of the outstanding sightseeing attractions free or at a significant discount. We opted for the 72 hr. card allowing us to move around the city easily and ... read more

Back through the long Karawenken Tunnel (7,000 plus meters) to Austria. We have now spent all of our Kunas (Croatian currency) and are back to Euros and a need to update our Go-Box for continued travel on the motorways in Austria. We have found that using the motorways is direct and very helpful, but expensive. So on toward Lake Bled for a 4 hour drive. What a beautiful and crowded place at this time of the summer. We had read in another traveler's blog that the campsite, Camp Bled, had at times been able to stretch to accommodate camper travelers and so we traveled slowly around the lake, enjoying all the famous and fabulous scenes, until we got to Camp Bled. SURPRISE! Absolutely FULL! Guy did a marvelous 10 point U-turn in front of reception and ... read more

I believe it is impossible to have too many zip lock bags when you travel, both the gallon size and the sandwich size. Right now I have sandwich zip-locks holding a litany of cords, my Passport, an actual sandwich, pretzels and left-over change in 7 different currencies. The gallon sized are holding a bunch of sandwich sized zip-locks, my Eurorail Pass and associated timetables and maps, my electric-current converters and several sets of extraordinarily smelly socks. Today the weather cleared so I laced up my hiking boots, packed a lunch and headed ... as they say ... for the hills. I had a delightful day hiking the trails around Salzburg, that, with some commitment, offered beautiful views of the Alps. I will let the photos speak for themselves. More mañana from Amsterdam. As we moved towards the border of Austria the landscape slowly changed, the dry parched earth and crumbling stone buildings of unkempt Italy gave way to green valleys and clean villages made up of wooden chalets with acute angled roofs proudly boasting blooming window boxes all built around white steepled churches. We had pre-booked our site at Alpen Camping Mark near Innsbruck and were greeted by the owner with "Ah the English have arrived". It sounded like the cavalry! Nice, friendly, small, beautifully laid out campsite but only a small swimming pool. On our second night the campsite was celebrating its 40th year and the local dignitaries had been invited. We went and had a drink at the bar to find that impromptu performances had started by different musicians including an umpah pa band accompanied by ... read more

As I waved good bye to Budapest, the temperature was again 106 degrees. I climbed on board an Ice Train and headed west ... to Salzburg, Austria. West you ask? Why not east? I thought the plan was to go east? My plan had been to work my way through Eastern Europe to Istanbul and then back, but frankly I am running out of time. By way of explanation (I will not call it an excuse, because an excuse implies a mistake was made), I spent more time in each city than I anticipated. What I learned on this trip is that I enjoy (i) arriving in a city in the late morning or early afternoon, (ii) spending that afternoon and the whole next day exploring on my own, with no specific plan or itinerary (its ... read more
