I thought we were taking a stroll through the woods. That was my suggestion. I dutifully put on my hiking shoes and we set off. We descended 250 metres to a small lake, the highlight for me was walking through an Austrian farm. At the lake we stopped for cake and coffee in a quaint hamlet. Yes, it was good to see the country side. Then we began the long climb back up 250 metres on endless switch-back roads that rose above the large lake below. What a workout! I will not feel guilty sitting four hours on a train tomorrow. It was lovely walking through the mountain forests. We found a large mushroom that is one of the best kinds. I think we are having it with supper tonight. Later, we did have the mushroom ... read more

I have made a goal to have at least one Servas visit per country so that I can become acquainted with the real culture and not just the tourist attractions. I am staying in a lovely house near Klagenfurt, a house built after careers abroad, and in my mind the design and detail are perfect. It has me thinking about my house and perhaps a few tweaks I could do. The views of the mountains are lovely from every window and balcony. I forgot how changeable mountain slopes can be as light changes throughout the day and evening, or when clouds and mist move by. When I arrived yesterday my hosts took me to a tower to get 360 degree view of the area. The train journey here was delightful through mountains and valleys. Pure pleasure ... read more

Wow! One whole month. Time is a funny thing. I feel like I have been here forever, but I am so sad to think I only have 8 more months to go. I am very happy here. I have made new friends, I know my way around (as best as possible with my directionality handicap), and I have time to think. Plus, I am playing volleyball, which is what I love to do. This week is a week of firsts...Tomorrow I have my first official German lesson. It's been hard feeling helpless in most conversations, but hopefully that will change soon. This weekend is also our first official match. We play at home against Melk and I am so excited! We have been training hard and the team is coming together nicely. I posted a picture ... read more

I had my first true yoga experience today. Atlantis - the official Wildcat's fitness center - offers classes every day. What a fun, relaxing work out. I am sure I will go back. The classes have funny names and themes. Whitney and I went to "Earth Flow Yoga" today... It was very dynamic, and a good first experience. Next on the list to try is "Yoga Loves Music." I'm sharing some photos of the gym itself. It's cluttered and colorful - besides the dolphins and buddhas, we find dozens of pictures of young, buff Arnold, and people doing yoga poses, and prayer flags, and flowers galore... you name it. Even posters of yoga cats and dogs. The plan is to get a solid routine going... weight lifting a couple times a week and yoga so that ... read more

A day in the life... For those of you who may not know, I moved to Austria to play volleyball. I still love the sport after four years of collegiate ball, and fortunately my body is still healthy enough to endure a few more swings, bruises and soreness. But I also came with the expectation to travel as much as possible within Europe and to emerse myself in a different culture. I've spent most of my life in the developing world (Argentina and Brasil); I lived in New Mexico for the past four years, and am now enjoing seeing the world through the eyes of another developed country. I view this year of living and playing abroad as an opportunity to learn some more about myself. During my high school and college days I was always ... read more

Wow! I can't believe I am finally here. In June I travelled with the UNM volleyball team to Italy and Slovenia on tour and was introduced to the Klagenfurt team towards the end of our trip. I got to meet the coaches and the team, and played with them against the Lobos (which was rough!). I was so incredibly forturnate to have been offered a contract to play with them this year. I spent the summer working and training, biding my friends and family farewell, and road-tripping from New Mexico to North Carolina with my mom. After spending a few funfilled days in Chicago, I left for Europe on August 30th. I got to meet my roommate Whitney in Chicago before we made the long trip to our new home. I flew into Ljubljana, capital of ... read more

4th of July dearies! And I'm in beautiful Austria. Happy Independence day to all of the Americans. Today, other than eating breakfast and watching a movie, I'm taking the bus to go the lake. Ironman Austria is tomorrow and everyone around here is doing it. I'm going to watch it to support my family. They swim through a lake and canal, bike through steep hills, and finish it up with a run. I couldn't do it, that's for sure! The people here speak German, but I'm lucky since many British and American folks have come to enter the Ironman. ... read more

Day 19 (Tuesday, September 23rd) Today was our last day in Slovenia. After eating breakfast and checking out of the hotel, we began the drive north towards Austria. As was the case with all of our prior entrances into new countries, no passport check was completed at the border. Sometimes, it seems as though there is a similar mentality between countries in Europe as there is in the States; they just wave you on in. It was raining in Lake Bled, but by the time we got to Klagenfurt, Austria, the rain had stopped and the sun was trying to come out. Klagenfurt is the provincial capital of the Carinthia, which encompasses the southern region of Austria. The town is of medium size in terms of population (about 90,000) and offers visitors many beautiful squares and ... read more

Drove back to St Poltein to find our friendly hardware store to buy an adaptor for our power cord, and by the time we found our way out again we had decided to only drive to the outskirts of Vienna today as we would not have enough time to see anything. So we hunted around for a camping ground or info centre without any success until about 7pm when we came across a bit of a forest which we could drive into quite easily so we tucked ourselves away from the road and parked. We still had plenty of light left to make dinner and have a little stroll through the forest before bed. After an undisturbed sleep(apart from a little rain and wind in the trees) we had breakfast and headed for the capital. ... read more

In Poggersdorf (near Klagnefurt) - tomorrow night (saturday), I will be attending a birthday party for who knows who... a friend of a couch surfer. I will hopefully surf nearby for 1 or 2 nights. Following - I will head to the autobahn on-ramp, and stick out my thumb --- to Vienna! Monday and Tuesday seem to be decent days; no rain or snow... let's see what happens! (Bologna and Venice/Padova/Chioggia blog is delayed ... sorrry!) My backpack is too large. I have a jacket and a sweater that I will probably never use again. I think I'll ditch them on the side of the road, or leave them here in Poggersdorf for other surfers (if they get cold!!)... read more
