Kelly Williamson

I started this blog when I moved from New Mexico to Austria after graduating college, to record my professional volleyball experience and my travels through Europe. After a two year hiatus from the blog, I am returning to document my time in Rwanda, where I am currently conducting research for my Masters in Sustainable Development Practice. I love taking pictures and reflecting on my travels, and want to share my adventures with my loved ones at home. Hope you enjoy!

Wow! One whole month. Time is a funny thing. I feel like I have been here forever, but I am so sad to think I only have 8 more months to go. I am very happy here. I have made new friends, I know my way around (as best as possible with my directionality handicap), and I have time to think. Plus, I am playing volleyball, which is what I love to do. This week is a week of firsts...Tomorrow I have my first official German lesson. It's been hard feeling helpless in most conversations, but hopefully that will change soon. This weekend is also our first official match. We play at home against Melk and I am so excited! We have been training hard and the team is coming together nicely. I posted a picture ... read more

The drive from Klagenfurt to Bled, Slovenia is only an hour and a half, so after lunch on a beautiful Saturday afternoon, Dani, Whitney and I squished into the car. (Euro cars are much smaller, and oh so much more sustainable than in the US). We drove a little ways past the town of Bled and into the Triglav National Park where we enjoyed a 20 minute hike (all uphill) to the most splendid waterfall. The water flows into the Bohinj Lake, one of seven Alpine lakes protected in this park. Please see picture descriptions for more details. After our hike, we hopped back in the car and found a place to park in the small town of Bled where everyone and their dogs was out walking, jogging, relaxing, or fishing on this gorgeous day. I had my first true yoga experience today. Atlantis - the official Wildcat's fitness center - offers classes every day. What a fun, relaxing work out. I am sure I will go back. The classes have funny names and themes. Whitney and I went to "Earth Flow Yoga" today... It was very dynamic, and a good first experience. Next on the list to try is "Yoga Loves Music." I'm sharing some photos of the gym itself. It's cluttered and colorful - besides the dolphins and buddhas, we find dozens of pictures of young, buff Arnold, and people doing yoga poses, and prayer flags, and flowers galore... you name it. Even posters of yoga cats and dogs. The plan is to get a solid routine going... weight lifting a couple times a week and yoga so that ... read more

A day in the life... For those of you who may not know, I moved to Austria to play volleyball. I still love the sport after four years of collegiate ball, and fortunately my body is still healthy enough to endure a few more swings, bruises and soreness. But I also came with the expectation to travel as much as possible within Europe and to emerse myself in a different culture. I've spent most of my life in the developing world (Argentina and Brasil); I lived in New Mexico for the past four years, and am now enjoing seeing the world through the eyes of another developed country. I view this year of living and playing abroad as an opportunity to learn some more about myself. During my high school and college days I was always ... read more

Europe » Slovenia » Styria » Maribor September 13th 2012

On my first Monday in Europe, after two days of settling into Klagenfurt, the team and I loaded on to a bus and drove to Maribor, the second largest city in Slovenia and European's 2012 Capital of Culture. We stayed at the Dras Center, a very comfortable hotel that had a volleyball court and training facility inside. We trained twice a day for four days and ate amazing meals. Eat, sleep, play volleyball... that is what our life consisted of. Unfortunately I have no photos that prove that we trained. Instead, I will share with you some pictures of our excusion up the moutain on the ski lift and down the mountain in tabaggons. Enjoy!... read more

Europe » Croatia » Istria » Novigrad September 12th 2012

Dani, our assistant coach was kind enough to offer his tourism services on Saturday after we returned to Austria from training camp. We hit the road early in the morning and made it to the Croatian border by lunch time. We parked the car and strolled around the town of Novigrad until we found a place to leave our things, changed into our suits and drifted in the sea. It was a perfect late summers day. Not a cloud in the sky. After soaking up the sun, we jumped back in the car and drove a little ways further till we reached Porec, another coastal town. There we enjoyed a delicious pizza, and we people-watched as ladies in dresses and men in tights galavanted around the town celebrating in the days Renaissance festivities. We hopped on ... read more

Wow! I can't believe I am finally here. In June I travelled with the UNM volleyball team to Italy and Slovenia on tour and was introduced to the Klagenfurt team towards the end of our trip. I got to meet the coaches and the team, and played with them against the Lobos (which was rough!). I was so incredibly forturnate to have been offered a contract to play with them this year. I spent the summer working and training, biding my friends and family farewell, and road-tripping from New Mexico to North Carolina with my mom. After spending a few funfilled days in Chicago, I left for Europe on August 30th. I got to meet my roommate Whitney in Chicago before we made the long trip to our new home. I flew into Ljubljana, capital of ... read more
