My second time in Panama. Contrary to many of my previous trips, I didn't change place to sleep every 2 days, but did only 2 places in 2 weeks. I spent 8 days in Hotel Summit Radisson near Gamboa, and Bocas del Toro, 6 days. Highlights: 1-Soberania national park: easily accessible; I walked 8 days in the trails and forest is full of animals I saw 2 new species of monkeys: Geoffroy's tamarin and Panama night monkey. Finally, I saw all species of Central America! Yahoo! 2- Bocas Del Toro: Bastimentos island: national park on it, really nice beach. 3- Zapatillo Caye: colour of the sea is splendid! Lows: 1- Bocas del Toro: Bocas town. The city sees an army of tourists, but it isn't the nicest city. Be careful of porters at the airport!! They ... read more

After a week of total decadency in Lima, Peru, our first stop in Central America was Panama. True, traveling from Cartagena via Lima to Panama City is not the most logical route, but one of the nice things of having a lot of time is being flexible. Panama City is kind of a schizofrenic place. One part being like any American big city, the other a beautifully restored colonial town. Restoration is still in progress and there are newly refurbished buildings next to facades wihout anything behind it. Apparently, the Panamanian government is promoting the country as a great location to retire and that shows: modern high rises and facilities, foreign big chain restaurants and hotels, American prices, a beautiful promenade, air conditioned malls, and many (older) Americans - tourists and residents alike. Not our cup ... read more

My typical underestimation of how much time I had and the stubbornness of my search for silk boxer shorts in the Albrook Mall (do they not make them anymore?! Why?) meant that I didn’t have enough time to have a shower before getting on my overnight bus to Bocas del Toro. Which is a little bit of an issue in Panama since walking around all day in hot and humid Panama City works up quite the sweat. I can’t sleep well if I am feeling disgusting but I think in this case it was more to do with the fact that this was the COLDEST BUS EVER. I asked the driver to go easy on the air-con but no dice. This was how it had to be. Some bullshit about needing to balance the temperature inside ... read more

It was finally time to leave South America. Though fun and although I had seen and done some amazing things, there were elements of frustration that accompanied me throughout my time there. This continued right up until the last, having had my water bottle, my universal adaptor and flip-flops nicked within a few days. WTF backpacker people. For good measure, South America decided to give me a final dose of bedbug bites to send me on my way. To be completely honest, I felt that I had had my fill of South America and that I was ready to move onto somewhere new. But South America hadn’t had its fill of me and did everything it could to stop me from leaving. Crossing from Colombia to Panama is notoriously difficult and a pain in the arse, ... read more

A Mom, a Menu, a Change, Mama Mia! Well maybe this second phrase isn’t exactly an example of a palindrome where the letters in a word or phrase are the same forwards as they are backwards; but, it is how Sharon and I begin to feel every time we take my mother to the Lido. We’re beginning to think we should stick to the Vista Dining Room where the HAL staff can give her the level of attention that she seems to be adjusting to on this cruise quite nicely. We set our alarm for 4:30 AM so that we could go up to the Crow’s Nest and hopefully get a good spot for viewing the Atlantic-side entrance to the Panama Canal. Our “today ON LOCATION” had us scheduled to reach the breakwater of the canal ... read more

We are on the final count down to departure time. We leave tomorrow for a 7 hour bus ride to Panama City where we will fly Spirit Air to Fort Lauderdale. We will rent a car to take us to the boat in Fort Myers. Our condominium neighbours have organized a pot luck dinner for this evening so we will be saying goodbye to all. It was quiet during the first two months but the season is in full swing so every condo is booked. Canadians, Americans, a Scandinavian and a Jamaican make up the residents. Everyone is friendly enough but they keep to themselves for the most part. We spent January relaxing, reading, swimming and going out to bars and restaurants. We did have occasion to go to the hospital for a broken toe and ... read more

Jan 10, 2016 The Canal This morning at 7 AM we arrived at the entrance to the Panama Canal. I did not see it or hear it, but when we went up to breakfast, there it was. We were already in the third Gatun Lock. (See photo 1). It was all very slow and majestic- no scraping or bumping. When the lock filled, we were drawn by “mules” that run alongside- very small powerful tractors. You may remember when Jimmy Carter turned the Canal over to the Panamanians, many people said that such backwards people could not possibly run this complex enterprise. Actually, of course, it was like the great non-disaster of the calendar in 2K. Pro forma, we were boarded by a Panamanian official who acts as temporary Captain while passing through Panamanian waters. We ... read more

Jerry and I wish all of you a Happy New Year, we miss you all. We spent Christmas Eve walking around downtown David and stopping at our favourite bars. The merchants were still out peddling their wares passed 9:00. The streets were packed with shoppers, the kids fair was in full swing and the streets were littered with garbage. Wrapping paper, food containers, boxes and bottles were everywhere. The garbage continues to boggle our minds in a city with pick up twice a week. We headed back to our condo for a much needed swim and more Christmas cheer. At midnight, the skies erupted with fireworks coming from every direction. This is not an organized event, everyone simply sets off fireworks at will. It could be seen in every direction even way up in the mountains. ... read more

Merry Christmas everyone. It is difficult to get into the spirit here with 95 degree temperature, Palm trees and sand. The Panamanians seem to be into it, with Christmas lights, decorated trees and really crowded shopping areas. We revisited Puerto Armuelles this past week. This is the beach town on the Pacific side that we visited in the rain earlier, I wanted to see it on a sunny day. We were able to walk the beach which is a course dark sand. It was totally deserted except for a hand full of swimmers. The water is quite warm and the sand is too hot to walk on without shoes but it is still very pleasant to stroll along the ocean. There were nicer dwellings at this end of town. We are looking for next year's rental ... read more
