Distance driven today: 14 miles / 22 km Cumulative distance driven: 8,129 miles / 13,082 km Today’s trip: Panama City to Miraflores Locks, Panama Canals visited: 1 No stay in Panama City is complete without a visit to the Panama Canal. It is hard to argue that there is any other attraction in this part of the world that is even remotely as impressive and iconic. Therefore, today we did what every other visitor to the country does, i.e. took a tour of the Panama Canal. The Pacific side Miraflores locks are located just 10 minutes out of Panama City, making them very accessible. From the balcony of the visitor center at the Miraflores locks, Zoe and I witnessed how enormous cargo ships passed through a series of interconnected locks at Miraflores. And all of this ... read more

Distance driven today: 14 miles / 22 km Cumulative distance driven: 8,115 miles / 13,059 km Today’s trip: Panama City to Miraflores, Panama Schools with donated e-readers visited: 1 Today we went to the Balboa Academy, which is a K-12 school just 10 min outside Panama City. Last winter we donated Kindle e-readers to Balboa Academy, and this morning we met Katherine Reid who is the Principal’s assistant and Mrs. Kim Cox who teaches English and who has been using the e-readers in class for a whole semester. Both Zoe and I have been looking forward to this school visit ever since we left Tegucigalpa in Honduras, and we were certainly not disappointed today. Katherine gave us the tour of the school and we talked for over two hours with Kim about how she used the ... read more

Distance driven today: 276 miles / 444 km Cumulative distance driven: 8,101 miles / 13,037 km (another 8,000 miles to go) Today’s trip: David to Panama City, Panama Milestone achieved: we have now completed half the PanAmerican highway :-) We let David in the morning, figuring that it would be a pretty straight forward ride to Panama City. Turns out that, between David and the next major city called Santiago, there were roadworks going on. These were not your ordinary roadworks, but rather what we believe must be the world’s longest roadworks! The entire 194km / 121miles stretch between the cities was one gigantic construction zone. The existing 2-lane road was being widened to 4 lane highway. Somehow the Panamanian ministry of transportation must have decided to widen the entire section all at once, rather than ... read more

Distance driven today: 239 miles / 385 km Cumulative distance driven: 7,825 miles / 12,593 km Today’s trip: San Jose, Costa Rica to David, Panama Border crossings: 1 We left San Jose in the morning and took the southbound highway running north-south through the mountainous mid of Costa Rica. The road quickly climbed through a myriad of switchbacks, and took us to 3,600m/ 11,800ft altitude where we rode for several hours. The traffic was relatively light, and the mighty rain forest, with all it nuances of green, started surrounding us. At that high of an altitude the temperature dropped significantly, and relatively quickly we found ourselves riding in some sort of magical fog. All the moisty winds coming in from the Caribbean and Pacific coasts turn into dense fog/clouds as soon as they hit the mountain ... read more

So after a long bus journey on a bus which stank of cockroach repellant, we arrived at Panama City. We were lucky as our room was available at 6am when we arrived so we went and crashed there for a few hours. That day we went to the infamous Panama Canal. We took a shuttle there from our hostel (Lunas Castle) in Casco Viejo- the old part of the town and went to the Miraflores Locks. Here they had a four story museum about the development of the canal and viewing points looking over the lock and allowing us to view the massive ships that go through. Due to the current usage of the canal they are trying to extend and widen it so they can get more and bigger vessels through. On our way back ... read more

We ended up missing out Costa Rica as firstly we didn't have time and secondly I think that it has gone through its tourist boom and won't change much, so I think that I can always come back and visit the country in the future and when I have more money! Our next and second to last stop is Bocas del Toras or “mouth of the Bulls”. This is a province as well as a collection of islands on the Caribbean side of the country. It took us 25 hours, 3 buses, 2 taxis and a boat to get here from Granada but it was definitely worth it. We travelled via Tica buses, which provide a solid network over Central America. The main island in Bocas Del Toros is Colon island which has the main town. ... read more

Having left a very wet Lost & Found in the early hours, it was an enormous relief to hit the Caribbean coastline in the glorious sunshine, where I have to catch 2 water taxis to my next residence - Bambuda on Solarte Island, near Bocas del Toro. I've heard great things about this the hostel, so my expectations are high - and I am not disappointed! The very delightful hostel is virtually 5 star in hostel terms, with a private pool overlooking the sea and chilled vibes playing throughout the afternoon. It is where a significant proportion of my time in Bocas is spent, embracing the sun by the pool or on the sofas under the covered veranda, this place is well designed for travellers. They provide a communal dinner for everyone at 7pm each evening, ... read more

I've managed to get 1 hr kip in preparation for this hike - hardly enough after 5hrs of jungle hiking this afternoon before this rather epic challenge ahead. But alas, the show must go on, so Dan and I went for supper (including a cheeky vino) before being picked up at 11:30pm to be dropped off at the foot of the volcano. Our group is 7 in total: 4 Germans, an American lady and us two - enough people to talk to whilst walking for the next 10hours or so. As we set off, it rapidly comes to my attention that my head torch doesn't work. Great. Even though my mother made me eat loads of carrots when I was younger, some light whilst walking a volcano through the night would have been useful. It's a ... read more

Pancakes for breakfast with Oliver and Evelein (from my coffee tour on Monday) - a great way to get started in the day. Evelyn and I are heading to the Lost and Found hostel (a small, remote hostel set in the jungle on the side of a mountain, with simple amenities and a chilled vibe) on the way to Bocas, whilst Dan will meet us there as he needs to go to David first. The shuttle ride takes us through some stunning Panamanian countryside - miles of mountains and jungle, as far as the eye can see. When we get dropped off at the 'driveway' to the hostel, and no one warned me of the 20minute hike up the mountainside with all bags on our backs - I feel like a packhorse, and curse myself for ... read more

Another sleepless night in an airless room of 30degrees with a broken fan and a plastic mattress - the joys of hostels! Great if you are a jockey trying to drop every last lb before a race, but not conducive for my sleep when I have strong preferences for cold rooms. So I took myself off for a stroll, which meant more 'glowing' and overheating - you can't do anything in this stifling heat without glowing! Taylor was due to come to Boquete with me this morning, but he had his money stolen from the club last night, the third possession of his being that has been stolen in the local clubs on consecutive nights (the first being shoes and then his bank card). So I head off to the bus station by myself - which ... read more
