Geo: 6.3939, -80.163We had a slow day. Philip finished grading the final papers for his class. He should be able to upload the grades tomorrow morning when we get in cell phone range of Nicaragua. That will be the last responsibility for the class. Glad it's almost over.We went to the party for the Princess Captain's Circle members, people who have sailed with Princess at least once before this cruise. Turned out to be 90% of the passengers on board. The person who has sailed the most has been on 279 Princess cruises. We have a new captain who got on board at Aruba. The dinner menu had all the best items on it – lobster, chateaubriand, duck a l'orange. Sure wish they would spread them out throughout the cruise, but that would be more expensive. ... read more

Geo: 9.18149, -79.8218Up early with the alarm as we were scheduled to enter the Gatun Locks at 6:55 a.m. I think we may have started even earlier as we were out of them about thirty minutes before expected. We watched the operation of the Gatun Locks from our balcony. A couple of days ago, I scheduled a time for one of the ship's photographers to come to our cabin to take our photo on our balcony with the locks in the background. He made it just in time as we exited the last of the Gatun Locks. There were also ship photographers who disembarked to take photos at the same time the lock personnel embarked to guide the ship through the canal. Those photographers were on the side taking photos of people on their balconies and ... read more

Geo: 10.8678, -79.8993We were awake and up in time for breakfast in the dining room today for the first time. I have been anticipating having eggs Benedict, but, no, it was not on the menu. As far as I remember, eggs Benedict has been on the daily menu of every other ship we have sailed. Breakfast was still good although the waiters were rushing, and I felt a bit hurried. We had a slow day today. We watched the old move Charlie Chan in Panama on the TV in our room. That was fun. I can't remember ever watching a Charlie Chan movie; I just remember the character from people imitating and caricaturizing him. Philip and I worked on one of the jigsaw puzzles in the library, a composite picture of neon signs of Las Vegas ... read more

Panama Canal 15th April Transit Panama Canal Another transit of the Panama Canal, this time West to East. Arriving early morning we got a great view of the Bridge of Americas and the new lock system for the larger ships. Getting into the channel we were paired with a huge container ship into the Miraflores Locks, the onto the Pedro Miguel Locks which raise us to the level of the Gatun Lake. After crossing the lake and the Continental divide its into the Gatun Locks to be lowered 26 metres to complete the transit of the Canal. Some facts: Every time the Canal has to fill a lock it takes 52 million gallons in 15 minute. The length of the Canal is 51 miles and is 10 miles wide The most expensive toll was 375,600 US ... read more

A rather smooth bus- and a short boat ride brought us to Bocas Town, the main town of the Bocas del Toro archipelago, on Isla Colon. Here we wanted to spend some time to take our Spanish to the next level. We booked five days of Spanish lessons for the next week and another quick water taxi to get us to Isla Bastimentos, another island of the Bocas del Toro.Everything at Isla Bastimentos is a bit more Caribbean than Panamanian, the creole people, the mixed language, the Caribbean food, the very loud music, the speed of life in general. We stayed in a wooden house above the water, which was really perfect, relaxing and had a ... read more

We are in coffee heaven! Boquete is a little town up in the mountains, and with its vulcanic soil and altitudes, it's the perfect nourishing environment for coffee. So we got to polish up our coffee knowledge by visiting a working coffee estate and through experiencing, touching and tasting the coffee beans. With its vast grounds, splendid mountains, chirping birds and tamed with butterflies Finca Lérida is simply paradise. The air smells sweet with flowers and coffee. I did not want to leave! Rolando was our guide and during a couple of hours he passionately shared all his knowledge about the plantation, the different varieties of coffee they grow (amongst which the super gourmet Geis... read more

From Panama City with an Uber, a local bus and another local bus we went to Punta Chame, at the end of a peninsula, where the wind blows often, for a few days of physical exercise for Merijn, playing around kitesurfing. That was fun!... read more

An easy boat ride and 4x4 trip brought us to Panama City. It felt both awkward and pretty good to be back in the world of comfort, electricity and modern facilities. Panama City is a very modern city with a small antique center. A perfect base for reconnecting with the home part of the world and a perfect place to enjoy a perfect icecream, the best and freshest ceviche, yoghurt, good food and expensive beers.Although we did not want to stay very long in the city, we did want to visit... read more

I decided to head down to Panama City earlier than Jess and Andy so I could do more there than they wanted to do. After a mostly sleepless night bus we arrived at 4am, luckily upon arriving at the hostel they were happy to point out 5 sofa spaces to sleep on, and there were still quite a few people up drinking! The extra 2hrs sleep were a godsend in order to function the next day! My new friends and I headed out to the old town for an explore and because it has great views over the water to the built up part of the city. Two of the guys are keen photographers and with an array of old interesting buildings this led to a great day exploring and taking photos. That evening we also ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Panama » Kuna Yala March 10th 2017

We ended up at Isla Tigre, one of the more or less 400 islands of San Blas. The island is a community island, which means there is a Kuna Yale village. The village is beautiful and because we are still very far from civilization the people live extremely basic, all houses are made of bamboo with thatched palm leave roofs. Although the men wear western clothes, all women wear their traditional clothes and jewellery and not because of the tourists (there were not other foreigners except us) but just because this is the way they live and wear their clothes with pride. At one end of the island (which you can cross in about ten minutes) the ... read more
