My fourth night in Honduras and I am STILL sick. I had originally planned on going right to the Bay Islands to take my PADI diving course, but since I have been coughing and congested I thought I would rest on the coast a couple days prior to leaving for Utila. However, I seem more congested now than ever --- a big no no for diving, I am told --- so I am off to Trujillo tomorrow for a couple days of lazing on the beaches. I know, Ì'm sure that all of you stuck in the throes of midwestern winters are really feeling sorry for me right now, but it has actually thrown a big crimp in my plans to be in and out of Honduras in 10 days. Unfortunately as well, I can't seem ... read more

I am entering my first blog. I participated in a US Military Humanitarian Mission to Honduras in 2005. It was a great trip. Myself, along with other military dentists and supporting staff went to Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, to provide much needed dental care to some of the poorest children in Honduras. We spent 2 weeks working on children from an inner city school in Tegucigalpa. Honduras is a beautiful country with a huge socioeconomic divide. The majority live in impovrished conditions. The majority of our time was spent, at a private catholic dental school in Tegucigalpa, working on kids ranging in age from 4-12. The trip was very rewarding and eye opening. It makes you realize how lucky we really are living in the States. I am currently stationed in Oklahoma, but I will ... read more

I believe that there is a conspiracy going on between the pharmaseutical companies (like the ones manufacturing cough drops)and the restaurants throughout the San Pedro area. Actually, it is an even larger conspiracy, for the people of San Pedro are using them for the same purpose. If one would venture to the United States, and he or she would enter a restaurant like Applebees, at the end of the meal, he or she would be given a peppermint breathmint. Some of the restaurants even give out ANDES chocolate mints. In Honduras, however, I have discovered that there is a different treat for your after dinner mint. In the US we generally ask for a Halls when we are sick with a cold, or have a sore throat. Here in Honduras, the people use the Hall's cough ... read more

I have been a teacher for six years, and every year I love it even more than the previous year. For the past few years I have been teaching English as a Second Language at an elementary school in Des Moines, Iowa. Over 80 percent of my students were Spanish speakers, and I had the opportunity to work with the families of these students as well as with the students themselves and the community. When an opportunity to teach in Honduras I came up, I jumped at it. I flew down to San Pedro Sula to originally teach first grade, however, upon arrival, I was informed that I would be teaching kindergarten. I was also told that my students would be fluent in English. The first day of classes, however, I discovered that the word fluent ... read more

Well I passed my scuba course, and I have to admit...scuba diving is a ton of fun!! It is totally like being in an aquarium, 10 times better then snorkling. That is basically all I have been doing since I got here...8 hours a day. Today I saw a turtle. I have a new perspecitive on them now; under the water they are so gracefull, they're just chilling, not like their buddies on the land! Christmas was fun, since the island is mostly tourist everyone just partied really hard here, I think I went to every single bar on the island (it is a tiny island). Stayed up way to late, had to wake up way to early, went scuba diving, and then went back to my shack for a nap (around 4) and didnt wake ... read more

I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas from the Bay Islands of Honduras!! I'm still in the Bay Islands getting certified for scuba diving. I'm feeling a little sick, and there is a whole chapter of the scuba diving book that basically says not to dive when your sick (mostly because of congestion making it difficult to equalize underwater) but I'm not feeling that bad, and I'm not congested at all...so I'm just going to go for it (don't worry mom, I won't push it). Yesterday I was in the classroom for 8 hours, today is the pool, and then the next to days are open water diving (and then off to Guatemala)...nothing much more to report. I did meet another traveler from the states basically doing the same thing as me(but going in the ... read more

So I left the beautiful islands of Majagual, and hoped on a bus to Granada. I stayed at a really fun hostel and met a group of people that where all going to the lake islands of Ometephe, Nicaragua the next morning. So I explored the city, and then hit the bars/clubs that night. For some reason I still cannot dance in the Latin style….so I revert to my hip hop roots…which might look funny to everyone else since they are doing the salsa or whatever…but I’m having fun so who cares. Granada was a really nice city, and I probably should have hung around longer, but I have heard so much about Ometephe, I figured I’d keep on moving So the next morning I hop on a bus to the ferry with 3 other people ... read more

I hope this blog gets through, as the previous one that i posted did not make it to the site. After three weeks of spanish language school, my head was about to explode.  So i decided to take a little break from school and check out the beach.  My original plan was to spend two weeks travelling up and down the caribbean coast of honduras.  My first stop (which turned out to be my only stop) was in Tela, a small beach town on the north coast of Honduras.  The beaches there are absolutely beautiful, with clear water and white sands.  But the clean beaches only applies when you get away from the larger hotels on the beach.  It seems that the locals don't take much pride in their beautiful oceanfront town, as they will drop trash ... read more
