So after turning my bed around so I slept under the fan I got a better nights sleep than the previous night. Aimee and I went for a late breakfast at GB's again and then spent the morning chilling at the hotel reading. I'd bumped into Adam the diving instructor at the bar last night and had promised to pop down for some fun dives. Rob and I walked down via Munchies and I booked myself in for 2 dives. I got my own instructor which was really good, dove by the big rock and then the black coral wall. Both times down to 18m. The coral was impressive, the fish not bad. Saw some cool things and actually wrote these dives up in my log book!! My instructor was from Southfields, the other guys that ... read more

Since getting our Ducks straight after arriving in Utila.... We spent a day walking around in the 'balmy' heat looking at places to rent.. The rent here ranges from $400 a month for an apartment you could find in say um Bozeman.. to lil shanty's with geicos running between you legs and wire keepin the windows shut.. Being on the budget we are we almost went for the latter.. but decided to give it some thought and took off camping to what they call 'Water Caye' for about 3 days and nights... We later saluted ourselves on a decesion well made as Water Caye was absolutly paradise, and gave us a chance to really feel as though we were in the Carribean.. I dubbed my first goal to crack fresh cocunuts while finding the most efficient ... read more

So after not having air con and a slightly hot room we got up and wandered to Munchies for breakfast. Finally got my bowl of cereal and milk (weird the things you crave) before meeting up with Amy and Heather to go to the public beach. Walked about 25 mins to get to the public beach. Hayley and Kate were already there. Within 2 mins of sitting down I{d been bitten 7 times so went straight into the rather dodgy looking water - it has a film of oily sllime on it. Later was informed this was algae. I still think it was rubbish. There is no waste management on the island, so rubbish is just chucked anywhere, next to a nice house will be a plot of literal crap. Rather sad really. Also Guatamala's waste ... read more

So left the hotel at 6 to get the 6.20 bus. The 1st of 4 transportations we would be enjoying this day. In fairness apart from almost cooking myself in the bus with no open windows, it was comfortable and I did have leg room... I woke up and there were people sitting in the aisle on little stools. They really do know how to make the most out of the space. After 3 1/2 hours we changed buses onto a less spacious one, but at least this one had ventilation!! We were on this for another 3 1/2 hours before getting a taxi to the ferry. The ferry wasn{t working so got this really dodgy vibrating boat that took 1 hour longer than the ferry and 95% of the boat were white or green when ... read more

Just arrived in Utila, a small backpacking and diving island that is part of the Bay Islands off the North coast of Honduras... The weather is a little balmy but beautiful and mas o menos around 80 degrees... Brought in the New Year in style and till the sun came up in a few different club/bars on the water, Kyle met a guy he actually knew from his first year of college that is working at a diving school here and so we´ve been kinda kicking it with their crew.. Haven´t decided yet if I will be diving...The locals are friendly most everyone speaks some English although it´s mostly a creol blend. kinda bumbed I don´t get to work on my Spanish as much out here but its nice to be able to make conversation without ... read more

22/03/08 - 11/04/08 By this point in Honduras I has settled into my house, got to grips with working at the UDC dive centre which meant that life was as normal as life can be living on a small tropical island. So for this reason i didnt write anything into my diary. I had a daily routine which was something i hadn't had since i left home. Wake up in the morning, do my exercises on the balcony, sit down and have breakfast with Darren and then walk down to the dive center talking to everyone on the way making a 15min walk into a half hour one. I was really enjoying the work and got great satisfaction out of being with students experiencing the under water world. Also the other Divemasters there were a fantastic ... read more

So, there´s this place on Earth called Utila. To find it on the map, locate Honduras (such as). On the Carribean coast there are some Islands called the Bay Islands and one of them is called Utila. Though Honduras calms this place as their own, it does not fit in. This is a funny place. Most people would tell you they come to Utila for the diving, which is indeed amazing. We happened to meet many people there that weren´t diving at all, which was perfectly fine. One thing that everyone in this place had in common was to partake in the general shenanigans that go on at all the various dive schools. So, we get to the island, check into a hotel and start our search for a dive school. In particular we happened to ... read more

After spending an uneventful night in La Ceiba, we made our way to the dock to catch the boat to Utila, one of Honduras' Bay Islands. Not knowing the departure times, we were forced to wait 4 hours for the boat. Little did we know, due to a hurricane, this would be the last boat to Utila for over a week. We were fortunate! The smallest of the Bay Islands, Utila is one of the most popular places in the world to learn how to scuba dive. There is only one town and at least 12 dive shops, making it one of the cheapest places to dive and popular with back-packers. It's got a very Caribbean flavour to it and the accent of the locals is an interesting combination of Spanish and English with a Jamaican ... read more

San juan del sur Rin: Rainy days in San Juan del Sur inevitably led to afternoons playing cards and drinking Flor de Cana con Fresca with Adam and Taz! Ahhhh, life is good! Movie marathons and a few sessions of mario kart were also had whilst the bottom floor of the small hostel began to flood... Time to move all our possessions off the floor of our room Nicko! Unfortunately the rain meant it was difficult to cross the swollen rivers to get to the good surf beaches, so with some knee deep in swolen river car pushing we managed a few days of surfing. Enough though for me to improve my stance and be able to stand up long enough to actually surf along a wave! Yippee! Despite these waves being barely more than froth ... read more

Honduras After school, I never thought I´d spend 7 hours on a school bus. But that is how we got from Belize City to Punta Gorda. They squish as many people as they can on the buses and thru the aisles and make stops wherever someone wants to be picked up. You rotate from knees on the seat in front of you squashed down a bit to head on the seat in front of you to sitting up straight...every 10 minutes or so. It seemed extra hot that day. We finally arrived in Punta Gorda just before sunset, slept there and got to watch some Olympics and find out Brett Favre´s really playing for the Jets, and woke up to get on the ferry. The ferry takes you across to Guatemala again, where you go thru ... read more
