Today, we were tasked with painting the railings and sheds of Santa Elena reserve a beautiful green colour. After applying multiple coats of paint, I found that we did an incredible job of painting the reserve a little greener. We even painted the bug shed, we washed down a couple of days earlier. While still being attacked by bugs, at the shed, I kept on telling myself “Pura Vida”. Some things never change. With the hot climate and the strenuous work we were undertaking, I started looking forward to snack time on the reserve. At first, snack time started off as an inside joke with the Mac-Serve group. We felt that we were being fed more than volunteering. But, we learned to appreciate snack time. Volunteering at the reserve was tiring and snack time provided the ... read more

This morning, after breakfast, the group headed over to Sky Adventures for our zip-lining adventure. Costa Rican zip-lines are known to be incredibly long and fast. They are a great way to view the beautiful Costa Rican forests from above. I’ve zip-lined in Jamaica before. However, the zip-lines in Jamaica, cannot compare to the ones in Monteverde. Zip-lining in Costa Rica was scarier but once accustomed I was able to appreciate the beauty of the cloud forest below. Like Jamaica, the last zip-line was a bungee jump. The hardest part was preparing myself to jump off the platform. I am glad, I forced myself to jump. Zip-lining was an incredible experience and I will definitely do it again. Three people from our group decided not go zip-lining. However, they did spot a quetzal while waiting for ... read more

After breakfast, we met Fabian, our new trip coordinator, and then headed to the Santa Elena Reserve for volunteering. Our first task of the day was to create a gravel path for tourists to walk on. The whole morning, Renata and I hauled heavy bags of gravel up winding paths and stairs. I never realized how much work it took to build and maintain the trails. Heavy rain damages the paths and the Reserve staff are always working hard to maintain it. I definitely have gained a great appreciation of all the hard work done on the reservation. It was not all work, though. We had a lot of breaks and snacks. We also stopped to take pictures of tarantulas and cute coatis. After lunch, we were given the task to wash down a hut to ... read more

This morning, we headed to the Santa Elena Reserve. The Santa Elena Reserve is a community run cloud forest reserve in Monteverde. Money raised from the reserve goes towards protecting and managing the reserve and providing higher quality education to the local school. When we arrived at the Santa Elena Reserve, we were given a tour by Sonia, a Reserve intern. We learned that a cloud forest is characterized by a consistent canopy cloud cover, which provides the forest with a continual supply of moisture. The moisture supports so much plant life that there is incredible competition for growing space. Trees are entirely covered with other plants including mosses and lichens to maximize growing space. We also learned about the Figueres tree, a tree that strangles other trees to survive. How crazy is that!!! On the ... read more

This morning, during breakfast Renata and I met up with the other McMaster alumni volunteers. We also met Leo, the trip coordinator from VIDA, McMasters’ partner organization in Costa Rica. After group introductions, we headed to Monteverde. The bus ride to Monteverde was incredible. Up in the mountains, we passed through picturesque countryside’s, lush green landscapes, and experienced our first Costa Rican massage as we winded around the bumpy gravel road to Monteverde. In Monteverde, we stayed at the beautiful Los Jardines hotel, where Renata and I got our own balcony overlooking the clouds. Then it was off to lunch at Don Luis, a contemporary restaurant near our hotel. After lunch, we had a quick siesta, before we headed into Monteverde town. Monteverde town is a cute little tourist town with gift shops and restaurants. You ... read more

Monteverde! For years I have wanted to come here - the mysterious cloud forest. I didn't particularly know what to expect, but I definitely didn't expect the cold! It was also raining on us, but the sky was blue - that's how strong the winds were! I have since read that February is known for its strong winds, so they shouldn't be that bad all year. We headed off to the Monteverde reserve early in the morning, ready for a full day of walking. There are only 4 buses in each direction, so we had to plan to be back at the entrance in time for one of these. When we got to the park we were given a map of the trails, and were told to do them all would take 5hrs. We did most ... read more

Costa Rica leads the world in biodiversity and this is evident in the exceptional numbers of exotic wildlife. It has the largest percentage of protected land and sanctuaries and was among the first countries to offer ecotourism. With the demise of the coffee oligarchy and independence from Spain, Costa Rica set out on the path to establishing a democracy which granted right to work, minimum wage and maximum work hours for laborers. Now Costa Rica is probably the most stable of Latin American countries and has the highest standard of living. It has become a favorite retirement place for many North Americans. We were scheduled to take our Virtuoso group on a tour of Carara National Park and the botanical garden of Pura Vida. Shortly after docking we set off in mini buses to the Guacalillo Estuary. ... read more

-Our trip to Cobano, Costa Rica Our journey here was long and exhausting. We left Vancouver at 530 on Thursday the 6th. Thankfully our flight got delayed by 2 hours so we didn't have to spend so much time in Toronto airport. We spent the night trying to find a quiet bench or somewhere we could curl up and get a little sleep. After walking around for about an hour we finally found somewhere to crash. We didn't end up falling asleep until 330 and we had to be up at 515. So not very much sleep. The flight from Toronto to San Jose almost killed us. We quit smoking once we got on that plane, so knowing we weren't going to have a smoke as soon as we got off the plane made us go ... read more

-Our first day in Cobano, Costa Rica We woke up in complete awe. I hadn't really seen much the night before because it gets dark here so early. The sun was shining, the animals were awake, and it was just absolutely stunning. I couldn't believe I was actually here. First thing I wanted to do was call my mom and dad but couldn't because we don't have Internet or cell service here. Which is fine because I'm surrounded by such amazing people. The kids, Hannah and Hayden, took us for a walk around the 15 acre yard. It's so different then back home. It's so green! The property we are staying on is wonderful. There's fresh fruit trees all around. All the sounds from the different kinds of animals and insects is pretty magical. We came ... read more

Hola, Hallo and Hey! Wednesday, the 27th arrived my mum in San José. So good to see her again. When we arrived at the house, she already knew, that she wouldn’t stay long in town. So we went straight to the Caribbean Coast the next morning, enjoyed the day at the beach and joined the chocolate tour of Caribeans. It was all organic grown, a lot of different types of Cocoa and at the end the best chocolate tasting ever - dark chocolate with a lots of different herbs and spices to mix. Salt and Lemongrass was my favourite combination. Aura and Manuel, the family who saved me from getting stuck in Sixaola a few weeks ago, had invited us, to stay a night at their house in Limón. We had a lovely dinner together and ... read more
