R: Our transfer took us via Jaco and the Pacific coast road, which crosses several rivers on their way out to the Pacific. At one, we were offered the opportunity to stop at a bridge where crocodiles are known to congregate. The crocs were pretty still, but sat with their mouths open, to remind you who's boss. A brave giant lizard ran out from the undergrowth and tried to tempt them, but they weren't biting... Literally! After a quick browse of more "authentic" tourist tat, we were on our way. We arrived in Manuel Antonio, on the mid-Pacific coast of Costa Rica and it was immediately much more humid again. We were a bit underwhelmed initially as I had booked a hostel with a pool, which was completely dry and empty when we got there. It ... read more

R: Next stop is Costa Rica - a small rainforest filled nation sandwiched between Panama and Nicaragua. Our flight took us via El Salvador - and to fans of the band Athlete, yes I was humming the song all the way there. We had an initial night in San Jose which was pretty much completely taken up with standing in the immigration line and sitting in a traffic jam into the city. The next morning we headed out on the early bus to La Fortuna, a tiny town in the shadow of the Arenal volcano. The bus took about 4 hours and along the way we mused about whether it was good or bad for a public bus to be this full of tourists when many of the locals couldn't get a seat. We actually had ... read more

In the morning, I had desayuno with the family again. I ate gallo pinto, huevos, and pan con mantequilla with the daily cup of café con leche. Fiorella complimented on my livelokai bracelets during breakfast by saying "que linda" haha. She and the boy were so cute. They were just happily eating their breakfast. And they were in love with my tee-shirt because it was Pokemon haha. It was an image of Charmander looking really upset that Squirtle gets to eat an ice cream cone. My host dad was later joking about how the little boy had many, many novias LOL. It was a great start to the morning :) After breakfast, they were getting ready to head out to the beach. I told them that I was going to Curú. The kids, the aunt and ... read more

I presented on the medicinal use of horseshoe crabs today in class. I first learned about them and interacted with them at the New York Aquarium. They kinda look like stingrays. Fun facts: they pre-date dinosaurs by about 200 million years and they're not really crabs. They are more related to spiders and scorpions. My main focus of the presentation was on their highly valuable blue, copper blood. Their blood is highly desired in the biomedical industry because it can be used to test for toxins in antibiotics and vaccinations. It clots in the presence of the toxins so that's how one can detect if there's something wrong with the medicine. It's actually required by law that it be used as a standard in testing drugs and medical devices before it gets approved and administered to ... read more

For class today, we went on a local field trip to the marine park called Parque Marino del Pacífico. Just kidding about getting used to the heat, cause man it was scorching hot and humid today walking down to the park. It was a 15 minute walk and we were all drenched in sweat, LOL. When we got there, our admission was covered. My professor also knew one of the researchers there (she was supposed to teach at USAC but I think my professor took over). We had backstage access to the facilities :) First, we saw grey pelicans in the front. One of them was missing a wing. Next, we walked around their beautiful garden/outdoor area, and saw nurse sharks and injured sea turtles. This park is also a rehabilitation center, where they rescue and ... read more

I'm beginning to adjust to this routine. Wake up early, walk to the sodafor breakfast, and then go to school. Today I had gallo pinto, fried egg, maduros, bread and mystery cheese...with a cup of coffee. It was good but heavy as usual for an early morning meal. After finishing up, I walked back to school. It's so peaceful in the morning. Love the morning walks. I haven't walked this far to school since my middle school days. I'm usually walking to the bus or train that will take me right where my high school/college is. So this was definitely a nostalgic but new experience for me. In class, we got the details for our Marine Bio overnight weekend field trip! We're going to Paquera and Quesera in Curú, located in the peninsula of Nicoya. I'm ... read more

After a long fun weekend, it's time to go back to school. Wake up at 6AM, get ready, and leave the house at 7AM to walk to the soda for breakfast. Today was the first day I went to get food myself. Kaitlyn's away now, exploring other parts of Costa Rica. Haha, good for her. As I walked alone, I took my surroundings in a lot better. I had time to observe every street, house and store. As usual, I was getting weird looks from the locals. The first look is a "she's a foreigner" look since this is a local town and there are barely any tourists. The second look/stare is a "checking me out" one if they're guys LOL. Smh, they have no shame in staring at you, beeping at you from a truck, ... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR! ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! 2016 is here!! I can't believe a year goes by so quickly nowadays. It especially doesn't feel like it because it's usually freezing cold during my New Year but it's blazing hot here. I must say it's pretty cool having a hot New Year :P I woke up very early today because guess what...I'm going zip-lining today at Monteverde Cloud Forest, or Monteverde Bosque Nuboso!!! How's that for a start to a new year? I met with my USAC friends in front of the school around 6AM. We were able to watch the rest of the sunrise. It was beautiful. Something about being up in the early morning: the air is fresher and cool and everything is just more tranquil. A few of the students didn't wake up on time ... read more

Today is the last day of the year!! I still can't believe I'm spending it here in Costa Rica haha. My host parents were off from work today because it's the holidays so I didn't have to go to their soda to grab breakfast. Instead, I woke up to some yummy gallo pinto, huevos, and pan with cafe con leche on the side at home. After eating, I went to class (sucks that I have class on New Year's Eve lol that's a first). During class, my professor told us about our weekend field trip to Curú. So exciting! :) We'll be visiting different ecosystems and habitats. Afterwards, we watched a documentary called The Cove. It was about the slaughtering of dolphins in Japan. And about how the performer on the world's first ever dolphin TV ... read more

I did my usual routine today. Wake up, get ready, head to la soda and grab breakfast with Kaitlyn. Afterwards, it was time for class. I volunteered to present my paper first. Better to get it over with and I won't have to sit through other people's and get nervous haha. I'm proud of myself. I actually wasn't nervous and barely stuttered. Really thought I would since my classmates are still new to me. I guess you eventually overcome stage fright as you keep practicing and performing it (y). After the presentation, we went to the beach to wait for our boat to take us out to the shore. Of course, it was another super super hot and humid day. Dying from heat...x.X When we all filed in, we were required to wear life jackets. The ... read more
