Lapa Rios - rediscovering the child from within! You know when I research where to stay I read a lot of trip advisor , blogs and so on and so on.. but if someone would ask me where to go in Costa Rica i would tell them - that if you only have enough time for one place - this is the place to go . Lapa is the Spanish name for the macaw while rio is the word for river. The owners John and Karen first visited the future home of the ecolodge, they witnessed a number of majestic scarlet macaws flying across the jungle, appearing to form a river of red above the canopy.... read more

On our way to Lapa Rios a National Geographic Eco Reserve at the end of nowhere ..we realised it would take us 7 hours to get to the next destination. We decided to break up the trip into two sections - using our resting place as Manuel Antonio a popular beach resort half way down the coast. I forgot to mention that Costa Rica is in the rainy season so we drove more than 4 hours in torrential rains that were refreshing but definitely slowed us a down especially since the highway is in reality a two way road with no shoulders and a lot of small and large moving trucks. As we entered the intersection towards Manuel Antonio I was so proud of Jeff as he and the Gps help me drive and manoeuvre our ... read more

So what was the question again? within a week we decided , planned and implemented - Iceland? - too stark, Canadian Rockies ? my brother asked me - didn't we grow up in the Rockies? so Costa Rica it was ! 18 hours later we landed in a country that is blanketed in green. Costa Rica has many options of where to visit but i decided that we were going to make three stops, Monteverde for the cloud forest, Osa penninsula at the far south end of CR and then to finish up near a volcano near San Jose. One of the things that one learns about these forests and jungles are the terminology of primary forest -which means original forest and secondary growth which is the vegetation that springs up in the wake of some ... read more

Hey there! The last weeks where pretty quiet at the University so I had a lot of time to visit a few new places. The first weekend I joined friends from the exchange group to go to Monteverde. In Monteverde is a really famous and incredible beautiful cloud forest, which exists because trade winds from the Atlantic condense at the mountains and create a humid, always foggy environment. Therefore, there grow epiphytes, small plants which grow on the trunks of the big trees. We went to the Santa Elena Reserve, less people and muddy tracks. We've hardly seen any animals because they know how to hide, but the nature - wow! Then we climbed the Ficus trees, which are hollow inside. I don't know how high we were, but we had a really good view up ... read more

I woke up early in the morning. The first thing that came to my mind is that today is my last day in Arenal! I felt a mixture of emotion - I was both sad and excited. I was excited because I will travel to a new place today – Manuel Antonio in the Pacific coast. But the excitement was overshadowed by sadness that I have to say goodbye to David and family. Saying ‘Goodbye’ has been always tough for me, especially when I get emotional. David, Jorge, Carolina have built a special bond with me, showering their unconditional love and friendship; and I know it will be difficult to depart from that strong bondage with an emotional ‘Goodbye’ when I leave. Well, true love and friendship never die. And this one won’t die either, - ... read more

Update of my life in Costa Rica, at the moment mainly in San José. One day we've been in the Center, at a free Transarte Festival, with a lot of amazing music all over the city. The coming week we made salami and ham in the laboratory. It is so interesting, that we actually see how things are made. The ham here is a little different, it reminds me more of a sausage with big pieces of meat with starch or proteins. Usually it isnot made of one piece like in Germany. In class we talked about food trends – and the prof brought a lot of things to try. The homework was about going to the market or supermarket and find out what kind of innovating products we could find. University is much more practical ... read more

We were deep asleep. Someone started banging our door. I woke up in the dark and thought it was a robbery. I shouted, “Who the hell is this”? Dipankar was sitting on his bed. I jumped out of the bed; Dipankar said, be careful. I went to the glass door and moved the curtain. The day break has started outside. I saw a silhouette figure with a shawl wrapped around his head standing near the door. I didn’t open the door first, but shouted from inside, “What’s the matter”. The guy shouted back, “It’s your wake up call”, and then went to the next door to do the same. I was taken aback at this new style of wake up call. Perhaps this is the Costa Rican way! But how that can be? It was fine ... read more

Getting me ready

The last two days were loaded. I was dog tired and slept like a log when the wakeup call buzzed in the morning. I suddenly woke up with the ring, but I couldn’t figure out where I am. Then Dipankar yawned from the other bed. Damn it! It’s time to get ready; another loaded day. Salvatura Park It started as a cloudy day. We finished our breakfast while sitting inside the restaurant and waiting for the shuttle. The shuttle picked us up from the hotel at 8:30 am and headed towards the Salvatura Park. The park entrance is quite elaborate. Unlike the Sky Trek, Salvatura Park has other attractions apart from zip lining. We planned to do some tree top walking through the rain forest after zip lining, and of course, the famous butterfly garden is ... read more
