Costa Rica Day 2:Alajuela to Tortuguero: After a decent cup of coffee at the hostel, we headed to the bus stop to start our trip to Tortuguero. Rather than bore you with the details of our extremely long trip to Tortuguero, I'll just to a brief synopsis. At right around 7am, we boarded a "Station Wagon" bus to San Jose. The trip took about 20 minutes and cost about 600 Colones each. From the Estacion Atlantico we grabbed a taxi to the Estacion Caribeno, paying 1,500 for the trip. We bought two tickets on the next bus to Cariari at 9am, at 1,600 Colones each, with almost an hour to wait. After a much longer, but more interesting, we pulled into the new Cariari bus station around 10:45 and boarded our final bus soon after 11am. ... read more

The three great elemental sounds in nature are the sound of rain, the sound of wind in a primeval wood, and the sound of outer ocean on a beach. Henry Beston author of The Outermost House Costa Rica the land of micro climates. We landed in San Jose and just days later we were in the jungle . After pounding the city streets and visiting all the key places; the theatre , the Gold Museum, the national Museum and finally the el Grand Hotel where Jfk stayed, we met our group and leader and set of to the jungle in a bus. 18/2/13: Red frog beach was gorgeous for a couple nights but kind of expensive and very remote. I really wanted to check out aqua lounge on Isla Careneros before we left Panama, so we decided to find a room on the smaller island. We never got to check out Old Bank, the town on Bastimentos, but I imagine we didn't miss much. We started hanging out with this awesome couple, Ina from Vienna and Geo from Greece. Their plans were up in the air as well so they decided to come with us to Careneros. They were both members of AirB&B which is like vrbo.com and tried to find a house for all of us to rent but there weren't many options and they were mostly on the main island. We got the last double bed ... read more

It was bound to happen one day. We have traveled so far and for so long and we have had no problems whatsoever. But how and when was hanging upon us, as it usually is for all long-term travelers. Panama and Costa Rica are considered rather safe so we did not give them much thought in that respect. We were not even supposed to stop in Costa Rica. It is considered touristy, expensive and well too modern. Did not sound appealing to us, to be honest. What you read about places is never 100% true so as usual our plans were altered by a certain traveler we met in Panama. She told us about a little village very close to Panama border which she loves and adores and comes back there every year for a few ... read more

Last Friday we went to Tortuguero, a destination we were not really planning to go because it's famous for it's sea turtle nesting, but it is not the right season to see that and because it is very touristic. But we heard and read many positive things about it so we decided to spend our last days in Costa Rica there. We took two busses and than a public boat, since Tortuguero is only accessible by water (or air). The boat trip itself was already great: we saw a few big crocodiles and many nice birds. And then we arrived in Tortuguero village, it felt like paradise: river at the west side, ocean at the east (about 200m further) and in between some wooden houses, sandy roads and no traffic (besides bicycles). About 1200 people are ... read more

We left the cloud forests of Monteverde and headed back to San Jose. We were expecting improved roads than the ones we had arrived by - but it was not to be. Although the roads in the small town of Santa Elenawere sealed, once you left the town it all changed and it was back to unsealed bumpy roads full of pot holes. That being said the views as we climbed down out of the cloud forest were utterly stunning - a beautiful spectacular landscape all around us. We had chosen to use the shuttle bus service again and the only other passenger was a retired American who was really interesting to chat with. He had been in Santa Elena for a few days staying in backpacker accommodation as he said he always had to find ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Limón October 1st 2012

This weekend, or rather, the last 4 days we spent in Limon, Costa Rica- another of the 6 provinces. The Caribbean side of Costa Rica, as I observed, has a totally different culture. The food, people, language, and general feel are all different. The food, like always here, is rice and beans but it is flavored with coconut- which I love. In Limon there are many different types of people, the majority of the people are black people with Jamaican decent. They speak a mixture of Spanish and English, which almost sounds like its own language. We left at 6 am on Thursday and didn’t arrive in Limon until around 2 PM. We visited Puerto Limon which is one of the main ports in Costa Rica. It was interesting to see all the large vessels, mainly ... read more

... read more
