Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Limón » Tortuguero September 16th 2012

So I woke up bright and early, after a long and much needed sleep to catch my shuttle to Tortuguero. Tortuguero is a national park on the northeast coast of Costa Rica where giant sea turtles lay their eggs. As I learned on my journey there, these turtles are special because none of them are recorded ever laying their eggs anywhere else. These turtles always return to the beach they were born at to lay their eggs. As it turned out, I was on the tour with two other couples. This is fine, and unsurprising, as I opted for the slightly more expensive tour. It seemed worth it because it included meals and onward trasnport to La Fortuna. If I had to buy these in addition to the cheaper tours it would be about the same ... read more

It's been a few days since I was last in Puerto Viejo, but as my hostel had no laptop and the app for this website does not work on my ipod I have been unable to write anything. So I write this from La Fortuna, at the base of the Arenal Volcano from a small hoste called Bueno Bonite Barrato Hostel. Monday I took my first public bus. Everything went fine, it was more or less a direct bus to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca from San Jose. Puerto Viejo is a pretty big party city on the Carribean coast so half the people on the bus were tourists heading there to hang out. Luckily my seat was next to Chantal, the Dutch girl I was travelling with, as Anita had quite the ordeal sitting next to ... read more

November 2009 Another early morning as we prepare for our rainforest excursion in Costa Rica. We had docked at Puerto Limon (Limon), the capital city. After a short drive through the city, our tour bus dropped us off at the Tortuguero Canals for what was advertised as a leisurely hour cruise through the jungel canal. Everyone was to keep a lookout for wildlife. For me anyway, it got tedious fast! We were constantly stopping to get a closer look at a bird here, a bird there, everywhere a bird! Throw in a sloth, a line of small bats on a tree, and you have the wildlife in the jungles of the Tortuguero Canals. I guess I won't soon be hired by the Costa Rican Tourism Board to promote that activity. Once off the boat we were ... read more

Wow…I don’t even know where to begin. The past couple of days have been very eventful. I finally got to see the Costa Rica I have always imagined. My dad and I have been having an amazing time. Yesterday we went white water rafting! Yeah, I know…crazy. The Pacuare River (Río Pacuare) is a gorgeous, completely natural, and constantly changing river. It is located on the east side of the country where its Atlantic slope begins in the Talamanca mountain range and runs approximately 108km into the Caribbean Sea. Unfortunately I didn’t take any pictures because everything gets soaked. The river and everything surrounding it was incredibly beautiful. There are waterfalls on both sides of the Pacuare spewing crystal clear, fresh water from around 30 feet above us. We wo... read more

August 8th - Canal anyone? Got up at a reasonable time for Costa Rica @ 7 am. - this could be a problem in the UK as that's 2 pm. Not sure I'm looking forward to going back.. Fresh bananas for breakfast again. The bunch that Jeff picked are ripening nicely. You just go along and twist them off. The are the sweetest bananas I think I've ever tasted. Saw another poison dart frog - this time hopping around the side of the house. Being bright green and black does attract attention - being incredibly toxic does save you from predators! After breakfast and as we are so close to Panama we decided to drive to the border. This takes you back a little way towards Limon and then a left and left again towards Sixola. ... read more

Seeing giant turtles, cuddling with sloths and touching a caiman After having spent a few days in the area north of San Jose we decided to make a quick visit to the east coast and the Tortuguero village and Tortuguero National Park. Tortuguero National Park is, as its name suggests, known for being a nesting place for giant turtles. Each year thousands of turtles nest on the beaches of Tortuguero National Park. At the height of the nesting season it is almost a guarantee to see a turtle if you take a turtle watching tour. The turtles lay their eggs at night. They come up on the beach and try to find a good spot. When they have found a spot they start digging a nest for the eggs. The turtle then lays maybe as many ... read more

August 6th – Caribbean Coast Up early today – our room had A/C but it was still warm and brilliantly blue sky. Breakfast was good – the French owner even made scrambled eggs and brought out b lack pepper – great. Proper coffee too. A very nice stay and very cheap. If you think about it bed and breakfast – with swimming pool for about £16! We are reasonably close to where we are staying for the last 4 nights – so we drove along until we found it – but as we weren't due to be in until that afternoon we went past and along to the end of the road – Manzillo Beach – great beach, good swimming and snorkeling. We stayed for quite a while then picked up some shopping and by then ... read more

So a short summary since our last blog is this: we left Granada and went to San Juan del Sur, we stayed there for two nights, honestly: its little America. You will meet mainly American tourists there and there is nothing to do but party. We didnt like it. So we ran off to OMETEPE. It´s the biggest island on a lake Lage de Nicaragua. The lake itself looks like the ocean. Its beautiful. Located on the island are two volcanos. The landscape, the peacefullness and the absence of crowded places make this island so special. We loved it, however we had horrible weather, storms and a lot of rain, so we basically relaxed for two days and ate amazing fresh fish :) After Ometepe we headed straight to Costa Rica, we underestimated the trip to ... read more

El 25 de Junio fue mi ultima dia en casa, al menos por un largo tiempo. Alli, madre, hermanos y sobrinos me despidieron. Alli igualmente me despedi de Costa Rica. Al salir, siempre queda un nudo en la garganta, pero tambien la ilusion de pronto volverlos a ver. "Al alejarse le vieron llorar, caminante no hay camino, se hace camino al andar..."... read more

Dear Blog Readers, We were excited to move up through the highlands of Costa Rica and on towards the Caribbean coast. Before getting there though, we stopped in La Fortuna, famous for being in the shadow of one of the most active volcanoes on our trip, Volcan Arenal. The journey from San Jose is a 5 hour stretch but if you fancy a beautiful spot for some lunch and to break up the journey then we can fully recommend Zarcero. A little town whose centrally located church has a magnificent pathway where a toparist has gone mad with the garden shears and crafted out some phenomenal hedges! Well worth a look! Once in La Fortuna, we arrived at Gringo Pete's, probably the cheapest place to stay in Costa Rica! Don't be expecting anything fancy - in ... read more
