Verder is alles goed hier. Beetje saai, rustig, weinig toeristen, veel tijd voor mezelf (is ook wel eens goed want dat heb ik nog te weinig gehad de afgelopen week). Het hele verhaal krijgen jullie later. Groeten uit Cahuita... read more

Hola! Hope everyone had a happy Columbus day off of school in the states and maybe a day off of work too! Here they don’t really celebrate that day as a holiday from work, but my brother, Juan Diego, did dress in a Native American Indian costume and all of the kids dressed in different costumes of other cultures to learn about them. I hope everyone had a great weekend as well I did some really interesting things this weekend and learned some things too... I learned about technology, different socities & cultures and the environment... So, let me recap my week... Thursday - Espanol Exam & Class from 8-12noon. Then I went to find out the prognosis of my camera - it broke 2 weeks ago! And like I thought it was going to be, ... read more

I can never get use to these international keyboard to get the correct symbols. So if you start seeing weird characters when I type it{s not because I am drunk or stoned. It{s been 3 days in Cahuita and this is probably my favorite place in the east side. In the morning I met Tia an Australian girl who works for the UN in New York in the land mine division. It was very interesting chatting to her about her work sitting on the hammock and enjoying the Caribbean coast. Our hostel called Spencer Sea side is practically right on the beach so you can watch the sunset and listen to the wave crashing against the walls while you sleep or read. The town is very easy to navigate and explore. On my way to Cahuita ... read more

The first stop was to Tamarindo which is pretty touristy. The surfing is good but the town is abit too developed for my liking. Any town with a pizza hut and subway fails the benchmark and you can expect pretty heavy prices for food and board. I would say on average meals here cost $8 and board $30 or $15 if you can find a roomate. The town is still in development but it will only get worse as more malls and expats move in. I would describe Tam between a less developed resort but almost at resort prices. You can easily find $80 to $149 rooms here. We ended up staying here for 3 days and wanted to go to Mal Pais further down but heard the roads were too bad for buses so instead ... read more

We have had some amazing adventures since my last entry. Friday night we were able to see the turtle lay hers eggs. It was a fantastic experience. The turtle was huge, around 4 feet long and 3 feet wide. She spent around 45 minutes digging her hole and then she lays her eggs in this hole. The guide said that each turtle lays around 100 to 125 eggs. The eggs are kind of soft and pliable and once the hole was filled to the brim, she spends another 45 minutes covering the whole. The top layer of eggs are no good and are only there to keep the real eggs safe. One huge highlight of our trip so far. The next morning, Saturday, we left Tortuguero at 10AM and boarded a boat for a four hour ... read more

So after my grand adventure across the border I stayed in San Jose for a day recovering. I wandered around the markets of town and enjoyed some local cuisine. The next day I took the quick four hour bus ride to Cahuita. This beautiful quaint town is bubbling with Carribian culture. I have spent the past few days here relaxing on the beach, exploring the jungle of National Park which is a block from my cabina, and doing some much needed laundry. The slow pace of Cahuita has been a welcomed change. But the slower pace has not kept the adventure away. My most recent adventurous encounters have been with the animal kingdom. In my past two days I have come within four feet of a sleeping sloth, walked under a band of howler monkeys, chased off ... read more

On Friday morning I got up early with plans on meeting up with my new friends for breakfast at the Bread and Chocolate Restaurant before taking the bus north to Cahita. In Cahita is the National Park that is the most easily accessible and most popular. It is about 5 miles of pristine beaches, coral reefs and flats where I think I saw a bonefish! Rich, don't wet your pants, I can't be 100% sure. I watched the dorsal and sometimes the caudal fin dart around in the flat area close to the coast. In the park we saw sloths (perezosos in Spanish, which = lazy), white-faced capuchin monkeys, a coatis (couldn't get a great shot) and of course lots of water birds. I heard first in the distance and then saw howler monkeys in this ... read more

Our Central American adventure began last week when we arrived in the Cahuita national park, in north-east province of Limon. The national park is the site of one of WIDECAST's many sea turtle conservation projects in the Caribbean. The park is breathtaking, and we see new species of wildlife every day, including toucans, howler monkeys, whitefaced cappuchin monkeys, leatherback seaturtles, lizards, black vultures, pit vipers and most importantly nightly visits from the resident raccoon, if you can believe it. Our work here consists of 14km nightly patrols of the beach, for seaturtles coming to nest. Although the walk and the hours can be grueling, seeing the turtles makes it truly worthwhile. During the day, if we're not sleeping, we try to enjoy the park's many trails, beach and coral reefs. Our first night out we got ... read more

Back in Costa Rica for a few days, I headed for Cahuita, on the Caribbean coast- and what a Caribbean feel it has! It's got a really relaxed atmosphere, colourful houses everywhere, laid back people... This little town has a nice vibe to it, me likes it! I came here to go walk in the Cahuita National Park, a nice trail in the rain forest along the beach- up nice and early (that's a lie actually, it was 7...), I headed for the forest and went off for the 8km walk to the other side. I´d started to feel restless recently for lack of a nice long walk, so I was pretty happy to be tiring myself out a little along this lovely trail. I got to see lots of morpho butterflies, which are of the ... read more

Day 200: The Caribbean Coast Arriving at Cahuita's brand spanking new bus terminal mid-afternoon, I walked in the direction of the beach looking for somewhere to stay, ending up at a lodge that's only about ten metres from the sea. On the downside, nothing seems to work in my room. The electric cable going to the shower to provide hot water looks like it caught fire a while ago, the fan is thick with rust and dust, the plug socket is hanging out of the wall, and the toilet flush doesn't work. All of this is easily compensated for by the fact that I have the room to myself with a double bed and I can hear the sound of the sea with my door shut. I'm slightly annoyed that I seem to be rather sunburnt. ... read more
