Next door to the town of Cahuita is another national park, this one with a nice white sand beach lined with palm trees. Trish, Nicki and I decided to wander through it, looking for wild-life. We were fortunate to see a three toed sloth right up close - it was just next to the trail as we were walking by. They usually live way up in the trees so are quite hard to spot, but on the ground we had a good look at him. As you might expect he moved in slow motion, and climbed up a vine and along a series of trees. It was surprising to see him on the ground since apparently they only come down every few days to take a crap. We wandered through the jungle and saw a lot ... read more

Yet another early start with the boat ride out of Tortuguero at 6am - it was a fun trip through the jungle, up rivers and into the canals used by the farms out in the country side. From there we caught a series of buses to Cariari, Guapiles and onto San Jose. It was interesting to see the transition from jungle to country side where people live in very basic conditions through to the towns and cities of Costa Rica. We got to San Jose and Trish hung out at the rather swanky Caribe bus station while I raced into town to discover that those wonderful people had repaired my camera - hooray! To celebrate, I bought a case to protect it from further misadventures. We got on another bus and headed out to Cahuita, a ... read more

We'd been waiting for our friends the Eury's to secure transportation so we could do some traveling together. Down to their last couple of weeks in town they decided to rent a car and we were off to the Caribbean coast on Wednesday, June 28th. We left our house later than planned and ran into a funeral procession of sorts on the autopista all the way to San Jose. Frustrating when you are trying to hurry. We felt bad that WE were slowing things up as we are early risers and normally get up and move pretty quickly. Wednesday was not one of those days. We met up with the Eury's in Pavas and headed out on the five hour drive to the Caribbean. We passed thru Limon and stopped for lunch in Cahuita on our ... read more

I have spent some time on the carribean coast and it's hard to describe everything I have been through here.. I'll try. First, I got to Cahuita, a little town on the beach and next to a national park. I got to know Hortensia and Ingrid, two crazy Colombian sisters who have a restaurant called Natural Ingrid. It didn't take long until I was wearing their T-shirt and had volunteered to help out on the inauguration of their second restaurant. We went out to dance salsa and everything was pretty crazy. Early next morning I visited the national park with some travellers from the hostel, and it was a nice 9km or so walk. Amazing beach. During the inauguration I don't know if I really helped out that much or if I was mostly in the ... read more

happy pesach... almost. So I decided to volunteer with the turtles. After enjoying the loveliest of days on saturday in Puerto Viejo (walking around the tidal pools, sitting on the beach, watching a kingfisher dive off of a palm going full speed into the ocean)... I then proceeded to have an awful night trying to sleep because everyone was extremeley loud, and some local ticos (as they are called) were being abnoxious and actually laughing at me when I asked them to keep it down. So I had it and the next morning went to the local park, which I was ambivilent about at first because I heard it was touristy, wasn´t sure whether there was much jungle to hike in during my free time.... I was completely off.... wow! what a place! The park ... read more

Hey Folks, We're actually in San Pedro, a suburb of San Jose, right now passing a night before heading to the Pacific Coast after our out of the way little jaunt to Cahuita on the Carribean Coast. Getting There As we alluded to in the previous post (new readers it is highly recommended you know the blog history before sinking into new entries), we revamped our plans and decided to catch a ride to the other side of the country with our friends Brian and Alissa. So bright and early we left Monteverde and crawled into the back of the Jimny - a Wrangler/Tracker type of auto that seems necessary if you want to have a chance at all navigating the CR roads.... side note, for a country as progressive in their attitudes and education standards ... read more

I spent the last couple days in the small town of Cahuita. I´m now about 15km southeast in Puerto Viejo. They are both Rasta towns. Lots of raggae. Lots of ganja. Lots of white kids with dread locks trying to fit in among the Carribè and pretending they are not also tourists. I´m planning on leaving on towards Panama tommorrow. I would spend more time but the weather isn´t cooperating. There is a storm system in the Carribean pushing rain and surf into the coast. The normally sky blue carribean water is brown and murky right now. It´s not a big deal. I will be back in March which is the best time to visit. The forecast is calling for rain in the Carribean for the next couple weeks. So I am planning on heading toward ... read more

Hey everyone...sorry I have been out of touch for the last 2 weeks. I really have been busy and the down time I have had seems to have been in places with no internet access. The last time I wrote I was in the surfing town of Tamarindo on the north west coast of Costa Rica. After Tamarindo we headed to the capital of Costa Rica... San Jose. San Jose is a typical modern metropolis, but not without its own charm. There are lots of parks to walk through, the people are warm and receptive, and there is a very active night life. I had a lot of fun there but unfortunately I had to say goodbye to some good people there. The way the tour is set up people are given the option to continue ... read more

These photos are from 'Aviarios Del Caribe' a refuge for injured sloths that we visited near Cahuita. After watching the baby sloths get fed and put to bed we then met the adult ones (who get to stay up later) and then we went on a birdwatching trip by canoe down the river at the refuge. What a lovely day.... read more
