(posted by Megan, 12/17) Well, class is almost over! We have been so busy the past two weeks with homework, creating lesson plans, creating our portfolios and resumes, and just being in class 9 hours a day. But I taught for the last time last night (it went pretty well I think) and John teaches for the last time tonight. All we have left after that is our final exam and to finish our portfolios. We think we are going to be working for Intercultura Language School starting in January. It is not official yet, but we're pretty sure that's where we're going to go. They are a very reputable school and they offer a lot of support and structure (no more making lesson plans from scratch!). Also, they offer free Spanish lessons to their teachers ... read more

Posted by John A week of class has passed and the weekend is greatly welcomed. I taught Friday night and it went extremely well. My class was very responsive and we all had a lot of fun. Being Friday night and the end of a somewhat stressful week, all of us in the TEFL program decided to go and have a beer after class. The other students have found a favorite local bar to frequent near the house they are staying at. This bar, “Pablitos”, is a true Tico bar. We were the only gringos there. The bar offers a bowl of what they call “boca” with every beer that you order. This boca is a bowl of thick stew with lots of huge chunks of beef or chicken on top. Some of the best stew ... read more

(posted by Megan 11-27) Ok, so you’ve got everything planned out perfectly, you’ve got all your pictures and charts drawn, your activities planned out, and your lesson plan worked out to perfection. You think you’re gonna do just great - you think you might just knock some socks off. And then? WHAM!! You get your own feet knocked out from under you… Tonight I taught my first class. It was just AWFUL. There were things I did just flat wrong even for a beginner, there were things I could have done better were I a bubblier personality type or a more experienced teacher, but a lot of it was just the dynamic of the people there versus the dynamic I expected to have, and I just didn’t know what the hell to do about it. I ... read more

(posted by Megan 11-26) I NEED FOOD!! I seem to be always hungry lately. Even right after I eat…We’re trying to live off $100 a week total, and I’m not sure it’s going to be possible. We went to Nicoya for groceries and spent almost $80 and almost all we have left in the fridge are pasta, eggs, potatoes, rice, beans, a carrot, some celery, a couple onions, and a half a red pepper! I’ve probably never eaten so healthy: tonight for dinner, we had three small diced potatos, ½ red pepper, one celery stick and one tomato all stewed together in a skillet. But I’m an AMERICAN!! I have to have MORE FOOD!!! I need big juicy burgers and portions three times too big for me!!Joking of course... but I’m still hungry after dinner, and ... read more

(Posted by Megan 11-24) Today was the first day of class. Phew! I didn’t realize that there was so much information to learn about teaching. We had a lesson on classroom environment and then a lesson on lesson plans… I have a feeling we just scratched the surface on both of those topics. Then the last 3 hours we worked on building lesson plans for our first class. Which for some of the students is TOMORROW!! Yikes, I’m so glad that’s not me!! John is teaching on Wednesday and I (lucky me) am not teaching until Thursday. We get to observe the other teachers and also go over our lesson plans with our teachers before we teach. I really enjoyed the class today and John said he enjoyed it for the most part. I kept alternating ... read more

So we are now winding down on our trip and we are spending some time chilling out on the beaches. We're still keeping busy but its now a mixture of national parks with surfing, swimming and reading on the beach for an afternoon here or there. Here are our highlights: Nicaragua We decided to spend a few days up in Nicaragua and we visited two locations - Granada and Isla Ometepe. Granada is a really small town (100,000) which still retains a Spanish colonial feeling. We spent a couple of days here hanging around and soaking up the atmosphere. Nicaragua is also refreshingly cheap after spending US prices throughout Costa Rica (and also considerably poorer). Isla de Ometepe is a small island formed by two Volcanoes (one still active). The island is shaped a bit like ... read more

Posted by John. Nov. 22nd Getting settled. Everything is falling into place nicely here in Samara. This is definitely a Tico town. The normal touristy feeling you sometimes get while traveling in Latin America is virtually nil here. Aside from the few students that come here to study Spanish, it is just a nice, relatively untouched Tico town. A rough knowledge of Spanish is a must. I have realized I know more than I thought I did and when I don’t know it, Megan steps in and acts as my professional interpreter. It is good that we came a few days early. Class doesn’t start until Monday so we are spending these few days just getting settled, relaxing, and finding our way around. Yesterday, we got up late, (You realize how much your responsibilities have diminished ... read more

Posted by John Where do I start?! I apologize for the lack of photos as of yet... they will come. -We flew to Costa Rica yesterday with a short stopover in San Salvador, El Salvador (say that three times fast). -The goodbyes at the airport are always harder than you think they will be. -Went through security and they said I was chosen for the naked scan. Wished I could have seen that one!! -Megan got sick and started a two day headache on the plane from who knows what? She feels a lot better tonight. We are settling down in Samara, unpacking and finding a place for everything. -Last night we arrived in San Jose around 8:30 PM with no incidents with immigration…whew! Although today we see that TSA did go through our bags at ... read more

Added by John on November 1st. The final countdown begins! It is starting to feel real now as the departure date becomes increasingly closer. Megan and I are probably underestimating all that is to be done before we go, but overall I believe we have the necessities taken care of, ie; tickets, luggage, place to stay, money, and so on. Work for me has pretty much come to completion. My seniority at work has collided with the slowing of the economy and therefore, business. Megan on the other hand has one more week at work until she is done. Now that I am done, she really wishes that she didn't have to work another week, but all will be done soon and we will both be able to focus all of our attention on getting the ... read more
