Okay, so before I start in on today's surfing adventure, let me start by addressing all the "Are you sure you're studying down there?" comments I've been getting. YES, I'm studying like a maniac! Let me take a moment to expand this point. Last Monday I sat down with the director and dove right into a conversation with him in Spanish for approximately 30 seconds, saying a few of the only sentences I know about myself, thanks to my wonderful PSage teachers. Well, for some reason, he decides to put me in Spanish Level 3, an intermediate level class. The class is only in Spanish. . .no English allowed. We're conjugating verbs right and left in the present and past, regular and irregular. I spend 4 hours in classes each day. This week our class consisted ... read more

I've learned something important about Costa Rica. . . the destinations are beautiful and extraordinary to behold, but getting there, getting anywhere, is inevitably miserable. Yesterday, some friends and I (two Canadians and a Swiss) decided to go see the giant leatherback turtles that nest in Ostional National Park. It's supposed to be a short little day trip, well actually a night trip, because the best time to see them is the week of the full moon at night. My Tico family said it took about an hour or an 1:15min to get there. So off I went at 8pm, knowing it would probably be a fairly late night. What the heck, I'm only in Costa Rica once, no? For one night I thought I could give up my first-one-to-hit-the-sack status. It was raining slightly when ... read more

Hola mis amigos! I am so happy to have heard from many of my friends from Texas! Now it's time for me to update you all on my first few days in Costa Rica. I arrived on Saturday in Liberia, which has an nice little primative open-air airport. The landing strip was short, which called for a very abrupt stop. And I've never stood in line for customs in 95 degree heat! I headed to Tamarindo for the night were I immersed myself in solitude. My first friends were two iguanas who greeted me on the beach. I did a little exploring in the town of Playa Langosta, and then returned to my B & B. I was the only guest at Casa Doble and since it rained that evening, I just bought myself a few ... read more

A last blog from rainy Samara......... After a fabulous trip around the country (and Panama) we ended the tour with a great day rafting on the river Pacuare. Unfortunately no pictures of that day because we obviously got soaked several times. It was one of the most fun experiences here in Costa Rica, maybe even better than SkyTrek (it's a close call). We left from Puerto Viejo early in the morning with our backpacks and slept most of the way to the adventure centre near Siquirres. We drove to the river and got our safety talk etc etc from our very cool guide Roberto. Somehow I ended up being the guinea pig, I had to jump into the river to demonstrate how someone needs to be rescued should they fall in. Quite refreshing actually, it was ... read more

Today is the start of my third week in Samara, a little beach village in the Nicoya Peninsula on the Pacific Coast. We got here during Semana Santa, the week that everyone from the city goes to the coast. Our daily routine consisted of going to the beach during the day and going to the bar in the evening. There is one clothes shop here, two mini markets, two bars and one nightclub, so there's not a whole lot more to do. After 2 days we knew most of the people in the town, so by now we're pretty much locals (well, sort of) We've been snorkelling out by Isla Chora where there's a nice reef. One morning we went kayaking which was very relaxing, until my friend Rachel got caught by a wave and ended ... read more

We arrived at Playa Samara, on the pacific side of Costa Rica. Playa Samara has a reputation of being one of the country’s safest beaches due to the protection provided by a coral reef. The beach extends for 4 miles. The tropical forest surrounding the area gives you a chance to see Howler Monkeys and Sloths. We stayed at Hotel Las Brisas del Pacifico, which is located on Samara Beach, Guanacaste. We were fortunate to stay in the top bungalows which gave us a view of Samara Beach. In staying in the bungalows, don’t be afraid if you hear a deep howl or grunt over your roof. It's probably howler monkeys hanging around your bungalow. It wasn't surprising, around the hotel area, to see Iguanas as they were part of the landscape. The area is incredibly ... read more
