I have for you, ladies and gentlemen, today's Top 10 List! I'm happy to report that I have not ventured outside of Playa Samara this week at all and am therefore not able to share with you the cross-country adventures I delivered last summer. Despite not traveling, a week in Samara can bring a person much insight as well as a most TRANQUILA attitude on life. . .and therefore, I share with you now. . . THE TOP 10 LESSONS I'VE LEARNED IN COSTA RICA THIS WEEK: 10. TICOS ARE VERY SERIOUS ABOUT THEIR FUTBOL (aka soccer to you and me). So much so that Friday's classes in public schools were canceled so that all could observe Costa Rica play Germany in the first game of the World Cup! My school rearranged their exam schedule to ... read more

Hola amigos! I'm back in Costa Rica, Playa Samara to be exact, for another round of adventures! First, a little disclaimer/apology: For all of you emailing me from home. .. THANK YOU. .. I love you for it! Please keep them coming! But, the internet service here is slow, slow, slow so I'm spending a lot of time/money trying to answer everyone individually. Hence, this blog! Please forgive me if I can't answer you each time you write :-) My story begins with my opting to book a charter flight (it's my dad's penny-pinching genes I guess) with a delightful little company called "Worry Free Vacations". I have to say that this is a misnomer if I've ever heard one! The worries began at DFW as I watched the mechanics working on my plane for an ... read more

We left the glowing lights of Tama Gringo behind for the beach town of Samara. Yet another palm fringed warm water perfect beach, WHAT A CRAP LIFE WE HAVE. It was a small town where we found a cute place to stay with a few hammocks and relaxed feel. The idea was to learn to surf, but the waves were not playing along. So we decided to rather relax and eat, as usual. It is hard when sitting infront of the computer to actually remember what we did in some of these places, but it must have been good because we stayed 2 nights. ... read more

Today is Sunday and we are still in Samara. Originally we intended to leave yesterday morning, but were persuaded by our Tico Mom, Maricella, to stay another day and check out some of the beaches North of Samara. I cannot believe how much the family we are staying with has opened up to us. After she made us a bomb breakfast yesterday she suggested that we rent a Vespa, or scooter, for the day and take it about North to Playa Giones. Maricella called the shop to rent scooters for us, found out it was 30 bucks a day and that we would not need to return it until this morning. Then she packed us snacks and gave us her cell phone in case there was an emergency. On top of that she washed all of ... read more

First of all, Dustin, thanks for the entertaining messages. God, the water sounds so gross back home, bums me out to hear it is so damn polluted. Works sounds tuff too, sorry man. If it is any consolation whatsoever, it would have been sweet if you could have paddled out with me today. Stay strong brotha, and enjoy your weekend. By the way, keep your eye out for the syringes on the beach, I am sure you have seen them as many times as I have. Well, today is Friday. Deanna and I have had a complete day in Samara. I don´t know how many times I have said this on our trip, but again the people are just awesome, so genuinely nice to everyone. America needs to start living with the Pura Vida spirit. Our ... read more

This was a family vacation to Costa Rica. We swam, tried to surf, zip lined, went horseback riding and had great relaxing time. Family time like this hadn´t happened during the last ten years due to life! Aaron flew in from New York and Mary, Marc and I from Portland. I still remember Mary's face when she stepped off the zip line platform for the first time, fear followed by pure exhiliration. We also recieved a scare after telling locals how we waded into a creek and thier amazement that we had not seen alligators! We stayed up till 3 in the morning hoping to see the giant turtles come out of the ocean to lay eggs. The next morning Marc showed us their tracks in the sand. We probably missed them by a short time. ... read more

Since you've last heard from us we've traveled to the other side of Costa Rica, changed hotels three times (all in one day) and sent the Brown-O-Meter well on its way. We are in Samara and after having a few down days are back on our feet and raring to go. Well, maybe we're medium-raring to go, but getting there. The rains of Cahuita, and possibly something else, twisted my stomach into some pretty intense knots that are still trying to untwist themselves.... on the bright side I've got my appetite back. AND, as an added bonus, now that the abdominal pains have ceded I've welcomed a new sympton... let's just say a different Brown-O-Meter might be introduced. Enough about that, I don't want to go "blue" with the blog. Back to Samara: Samara We arrived ... read more

The journey to Playa Samara from Santa Teresa took a while ... I think almost 5 hours .. I was expecting it to take about half that! The roads in Costa Rica are bloody awful .. most of the journey is on unpaved roads going about 20km/h. Tedious! I travelled up to Samara with Will & Nikki who I met in Jaco with the surf school. We got to Samara and got a 2 story hut on the beach, with one bedroom downstairs and one upstairs. I've woken up really early the last 2 mornings to see beautiful sunrises from my bed ... fantastic! Samara is a beautiful bay, with jungle clad hills coming right down to the beach, and with an island set out to one side of the bay. Samara reminds me a bit ... read more

Well the folks at Intercultura Language School could NEVER give me an exam that equaled to the true test I had this week in Samara. For those of you wondering why I haven't blogged or emailed much in over a week. . .here's my story: Last Saturday night I began to feel a sore throat that I knew was a tell-tale sign of worse things to come. I had prepared myself well for all kinds of intestinal issues that I'd heard were so common in Latin America. Of course no where in my ziplock of medicines could I find anything for any ailments snot-related. I decided it best that I befriend the little man at the farmacia. Boy was that an experience! Now I can proudly say I'm coming along quite nicely with the language acquisition ... read more

Today, after surfing, I had nothing but time on my hands. I decided to jump in one of the school's hammocks and read my book. . .pura vida, no? As I was reading to the sound of waves and palm branches, I caught a glimpse of our friendly neighbors, los monos. It was a cute little family. The dad, ever the macho, is the family's protector and stayed on a main branch while his wife and babies, some of which were on her back, took time to go out onto further branches to eat fruit. I started snapping photos right and left. Then I made the mistake of getting right under one of those monkeys. She either really didn't like me or felt very comfortable with me right there because that was the exact moment she ... read more
