so we´re officially done with school...yay!! yesterday they gave us each huge homework packets to study for our tests today (and carrie had to write a 300 word paper as well...). we pretty much decided to screw that. well...carrie did, what a shock!! she had to convince chad! but he didn´t have as much work, or the paper, so whatev. instead we spent the morning walking the entire samara beach, which was QUITE the task. it took about 3 hours and our bodies were already DEAD from surfing yesterday. SPEAKING of surfing, we kicked ass on the waves yesterday!! carrie took a lesson and made it look easy. chad managed to figure it out all on his own (i know, i couldn´t believe it either!!). overall, we were probably...no DEF the best beginners out there. ... read more

So...school´s a bit harder than we expected. Oh well, solo 3 dias mas!! And it´s by the ocean, so when we get bored with class we can just watch the waves. At least chad can, his class is outside. Carrie got stuck indoors (but at least she has a/c :-)) so she just stares out the windows at the crazy fighting and jumping squirrels. They´re bright orange with gray mohawks..way cool. Sorry we haven´t uploaded any pics yet, but we have been taking them. The internets are sooo slow and we pay by the minute, so it hasn´t really been worth it yet. When we stay somewhere with free internet tho, we´ll try to add some. We hit the beach today. Montezuma had prettier and more deserted beaches, but the waves here are smaller (aka ... read more

So we took a shuttle to Samara today from Montezuma. What a crazy ride! We had to go back around through Paquera b/c all the other roads flood out during this season. It was supposed to be a 4 1/2 hr drive..we made it in 3! The town is nice so far, and there's lots of Costa Ricans (Ticos) who are vacationing here. We're staying in Entre Dos Aguas B&B. It's so nice! Even warm water (not that we're even using it tho!). Speaking of warm water, the ocean is like a bath here. Way warmer than Montezuma, which wasn't even that cold either. The waves are smaller so if we decide to try surfing we should have a better chance of surviving...or not embarassing ourselves. Not quite sure where we'll be staying the rest ... read more

If It Ain´t Broke, Don´t Fix It Central America Caribbean » Costa Rica » Samara By TicoTime May 16th 2007 Dolphin, off the Port Bow! They were just too cool.Hello All, We´re still loving our time on the beach here in Samara, and when we realized how sad we were about having to leave, we decided to stay another day. The thought of camping amid torrential downpours, mud, humid tropical heat and most of all, bugs that are out of this world, we made the decision to abort our planned camping trip to Corcovado. Which is somewhat disappointing but we figured after being forced down from Cerro Chato we could end up having a similar experience. And it takes a day of travel on the bus from San Jose to get there (after staying overnight) and ... read more

Casa del Sol Jenny´s castle in the sand and sun... a crab moved in shortly to claim it as his own. We allowed it.Hola amigas and amigos! The first week in the country, we were positively spoiled, so it makes sense that there must be a (slight) fall from grace somewhere. We got our first taste on a tour to Volcan Arenal. We decided we´d chance the weather (against the recommendation of our guide, Giovani) and take the volcano tour the next day as opposed to right after getting back from Rio Celeste. We were tired, after all, and wanted to enjoy our stay at the hotsprings. Oops, because the next night it rained for exactly the hour we did a jungle tour, and was clouded over when we went to watch the volcano. But that ... read more

We left the comfort and convenience of the Maccormac home in Playa Hermosa to start exploring the rest of Costa Rica. Since we had been to CR once before in Dec. 2003, we wanted to check out some different sights this time. We decided to head south, down the coast, to a town called Samara. The trip was about 100km and required 3 different buses, it took 4 hours and cost about 5 dollars for both of us. Once there we checked into the first hotel we came across. It also happened to be the cheapest one in town at $10/pp/night. It was cheap for a reason. All the mosquito screens were broken out, the door was a few slabs of wood with enough space in between to see through, it didn't lock in any ... read more

My parents decided on a whim to come visit Costa Rica. What a great excuse for Mike and I to continue our travels of the country and show my folks around a bit. We had planned on taking them to La Paz Waterfall, Arenal Volcano, Manuel Antonio and ending their visit here in Sámara. It wasn’t until halfway into their trip that I realized we simply wouldn’t have time to do everything and decided to cut Manuel Antonio out of our plans. When we arrived at La Paz Waterfall Gardens Resort, we were completely amazed at the beauty of the rooms. The design was perfect, the craftsmanship breathtaking and the views something that we’ll be talking about for years to come. There was no amenity overlooked and many that came as pleasant surprises. We had a ... read more

Sámara is located on the western Pacific coast between the beaches of Nosara and Montezuma. It is said to be one of the safest and most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Wildlife here abounds and not a day goes by without us seeing monkeys, lizards and birds from the deck of our condo. We’ve also spotted in our back yard a crocodile who has become quite famous around town for his survival skills. The “lot” next door to our condos apparently has only recently come into existence. To the dismay of locals, what used to be an estuary was destroyed in the middle of the night by folks dumping dirt to create what now looks like a “lot”. The owner figured he could get more money if he sold this section of his land to developers ... read more

I had the most fabulous weekend, again opting not to travel (much) because Samara is so amazing. Saturday we had glorious weather so I attempted an adventure of swimming to the island off of Samara. With camera carefully triple-wrapped in ziplock bags, I took the 45 minute walk to the very end of the beach at low tide to the place where I'd have the shortest distance to swim. I must have gone too far though because I found myself sort of stranded among some rocks. I finally made myself back to the beach and started out again. However, some ugly clouds started forming on the horizon and I heard my mother's voice saying, "Jolynn, don't you have any sense?!?" With the theme song of Gilligan's Island humming in my head, I decided NOT to start ... read more

Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore! Or at least, we're not in Round Rock Independent School District in Austin, Texas anymore! This week, I had the opportunity to visit the elementary school here in Playa Samara as well as interview the principal. It was something I've wanted to do since last summer so when my Spanish teacher gave us the homework assignment to interview someone in town, write a paper on it, and then do an oral presentation of what we learned, I jumped at the chance to visit la escuela AND have it "count" for my homework! Instead of sharing with you my very butchered Spanish version of what I observed and concluded, I thought I'd relay what I learned in a slightly different manner. Thus, I have compiled the following synopsis of my experience: ... read more
