After our wonderful experience with Geovani we spent the remainder of the day having our laundry done and packing our bags. We ate at the hotel last night, finishing up our pasta and pesto. Our shuttle arrived on time and sadly we were a bit rushed, not getting to say a proper good-bye and thank you to Anthony and Wdlivia for all their hospitality at Hotel Villa Fortuna. The shuttle quickly filled with people as we stopped at various hotels and everyone was feeling the same misery about the rain! We drove around Lake Arenal and then turned up the mountain where, magically there appeared a line in the sky! One side clouds, the other brilliant blue and sunshine! You could hear the collective gasp from the riders and even the driver made a comment about ... read more

Well we made it to Liberia! We took a cold and very short walk down a busy street in Toronto last night to wear off a great dinner! Our flight to Liberia was on time and after a bit of a panic at the ticket self-service kiosk (Curtis' ticket had his middle name, passport did not!) we boarded our plane. We sat with a nice young man who kindly gave us his travel book for Costa Rica. The flight was uneventful followed by a smooth landing at a very windy airport in Liberia. Yes, there may have been a few random thoughts about crashing ?. All went well and we disembarked to a very hot and humid day. At that moment I totally realized I had too many clothes, and several I would not need! We ... read more

In August of 2013 my boyfriend and I decided to go on a last minute vacation to Costa Rica. We were a little worried as August is off season, however we were pleasantly surprised with the weather. It was around 25-30 degrees Celsius each day and we only had about an hour of rain on two occasions. We stayed at Occidental Grand Papagayo and I can only say positive things about the resort. The room, food and staff were all excellent. And, as it is a smaller resort, it was nice and peaceful. While in Costa Rica we wanted to experience as much as we could, so we took a number of day trips. Our first trip was an action packed day; we went zip lining, white water tubing, horseback riding, a mud bath and a ... read more

Today we visited the Parque National Rincon dela Vieja, which is a national park based around a volcano, approximately 25km from Liberia, where we are staying. We got picked up at 7am in a 4x4 truck required for the poor road to the park. On arrival we were given a map and directed to the two trails. The first was a 5km trek through dense forest and open grasslands, finishing at Catarata la Cangreja, a high waterfall plunging into a beautiful blue lagoon. Once there we went for a swim in the cool fresh water which was a welcome refreshment from the heat. We then hiked the 5km back to the ranger station ready to start the next trail. The second was a circular route up and down steep paths through forest, passing another couple of ... read more

Last Sunday we went to National park Santa Elena, a cloud forest. We did a long hike, didn't see much wildlife but we did not expect that as we knew that its is not best place to see wildlife but for the beautiful cloud forest. The forest itself was beautiful enough, looking like a fairytale-forest: very calm, dense, green and very mossy. And of course very wet (typical for cloud forest). On Monday we travelled to Liberia and booked our bus tickets for Nicaragua (we are going there coming Tuesday), so we are ready to go one of these days to the embassy for Gyanendra's visa. So again we are in a very hot area (about 35-38C), in Santa Elena we had very cool nights, which we enjoyed a lot. Tuesday we went to National park ... read more

Dear Blog Readers, Triumphantly I write this blog in the knowledge that I´ve been awarded Blogger of the Week! Thankyou for the nominations and the decision to let this small insignificant deluge into the thoughts of ours on our travels be awarded! We left the Flutterby House bitten to death by mosquitos and there was a little bit too much hippiness going on (at one point I heard Ellie Golding coming out the speakers...*shudders*). However, the place was beautiful and probably the nicest beach we've ever seen so it is definitely worth checking out if you get the chance. I also used their book exchange service. Much to the delight of Betty and Stephanie, I´ve become some sort of book fiend whilst we´ve been away. I implore anybody travelling to get Bill Bryson´s "Notes From A ... read more

Fasten your seatbelt! We are off to CR on one of the coldest day do the season yet, OK even if it's been a short season!... But it's not too warm without a coat! Yehah! Only a few hours from warmth ... Of course, only after we survive the Zombie barf according to Isaac & Nicholas (more commonly known as deicing around an airport)! Attachez vos ceintures! ... read more

I set off from Jaco with a simple plan and executed it to near perfection. I wanted to camp again at El Sol Verde because of the great facilities and the friendly village where it's located. I had also planned to kill some time in Liberia on the internet but the place I knew was closed and I couldn't find another. I picked up a local girl at the beginning of the 10 kilometer dirt and gravel road that leads to Curubandé because I knew that bus service was infrequent and that she was probably counting on somebody giving her a ride. We conversed as best we could but I have an especially hard time understanding Spanish when I can't hear it over the din of my poor car's suspension screaming for mercy. She was a ... read more
