Scott and I are travelling with friends this trip. They all spent two weeks in the Philippines while I worked and I met up with them in KL on the 12th of Jan. I arrived in KL on the 11th on an airasia flight from Australia. The seats were, as expected, tiny which wasn’t much of an issue as I had an entire row to myself. Once my bag finally appeared on the baggage carousel (why does my bag always seem to be the last one out?) at the LCCT airport I caught the 9RM bus to KL Sentral train station which took about an hour. From there I caught the monorail to the same hotel Scott and I stayed at in KL last time. The next day I revisited the Petronas towers, KLCC, BB Plaza, ... read more

KL was bad for our holiday budgets...we spent the large majority of 3 days there shopping! We arrived in KL on the train back from Singapore reasonably early in the morning and caught the monorail to Bukit Bintang Station in the Golden Triangle area. We had been told by Mira and Khalid (from the Perhentians) that this was the area we should stay in as its pretty central and has good food, accommodation and heaps of shopping - turns out thats true. Just down the road from our hotel were BB Plaze, Sungei Wang Plaza, Imbi Plaza, Plaza Low Yat and Lot 10. Conveniently, all the shopping centers were having their 'end of season' sale...which neither of us really understood considering the weather is basically the same all year around. The first night we had dinner ... read more

We arrived in Singapore about 11 hours after we got on the train at Jerentut in Malaysia. The train was incredibly slow and at each stop people got on/off the train to have a look around, buy food and generally slow the journey even more. We also had some mechanical issues which meant we stopped somewhere between stations along the way for about an hour and a half, luckily they were solved when someone was genius enough to suggest using a 30cm meat clever from the kitchen...hmm I'm sure we didn't need whichever cable they cut? Scott's friend Bill was waiting for us at the station when we arrived which was nice and handy. We jumped in the car and headed off towards his house (which he shares with two other guys) in Jurong West. Bill ... read more

Having stayed in the Perhentians for an extra three days, we got back to the mainland with about 50 ringit ($17) left thinking that there would be an ATM there. Unfortunately this wasn't the case, but our bus driver assured us that we would be able to stop off at an ATM before we reached the national park. After a couple of hours and breakfast and lunch already eaten, the bus pulled up at a shop front and said you need to go and buy your national park entry tickets...uhhh....crap! we had about 10 ringit ($3) on us and we were sure that this wouldn't be anywhere near enough. Fortunately when I asked how much they were the lady said 1 ringit! That price is a bit of a joke really and it kind of seems ... read more

As soon as we got off the bus in Kuala Besut we were ambushed by people trying to sell us boat tickets to the Perhentian Islands. We weren't sure if they were trying to rip us off and charge us more than they should, so we walked towards the pier with a couple we met on the bus (Khalid - from Qatar and Mira - from Malaysia). Surprisingly, everyone did actually charge the same price, including the guys that ran at our bus when we arrived. We got onto the boat and arrived at the Big Island (Perhentian Besar) at about 10:30. We were in two minds as to which island we should choose, but we had heard the accommodation was a much better standard on the big island so we all ended up hopping of ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Terengganu » Kuala Terengganu July 2nd 2008

Surprisingly our Air Asia flight from KL was actually on time so we arrived in Kuala Terengganu at about 4pm. We intended on spending about 3 days in KT, however on the drive to our hotel we were already planning our escape. It was just a town, nothing particularly interesting to see or do. We ended up spending about 1.5 days there not doing a whole lot although we did go for a walk around the city to see the Sultan's Palace, a mosque, the foreshore etc. The Sultan's Palace wasn't particularly impressive. The building itself was alright, however he had no garden really...perhaps he should stop spending so much on the state and maybe splurge on himself...hmm. The Malaysian government is actually quite interesting. Most states have a sultan, and the sultans take turns (in ... read more

Asia » Malaysia » Sabah » Kota Kinabalu June 29th 2008

We arrived back in Kota Kinabalu after an uneventful 6hr bus ride via Ranau near Mt. Kinabalu. After we settled in we went for a walk and ended up trying 'cheesy wedges' at KFC...hmm. The following day we decided we should do some touristy things...so we walked to the Sabah Museum. It was probably only a 1.5km walk at most, however because of the heat and humidity we were both exhausted and drenched in sweat by the time we arrived. Turns out the walk was not at all worth it, the museum was old and not particularly exciting so after quickly looking around we walked back to our hotel and collapsed under the fan. The next morning we walked to Jessleton Point to catch a boat out to Pulau Mamutik, one of the smaller islands in ... read more

This morning we caught a taxi out to the Sandakan War Memorial this morning which is just outside town. Its on the site of a Japanese POW camp which was used to hold British and Australian prisoners during World War 2. The camp held 2700 prisoners of which only 6 Australians (who managed to escape) survived. The site has been made into a memorial by the Australian government and was fantastic. The main pavilion has an extremely well presented history with photos of the camp and quotes from survivors. We spent about an hour reading all the information and looking at the photos, then walked around the grounds and saw an excavator, boiler, water tanks etc from when the camp was operational. The majority of the camp was destroyed by the Japanese just before they abandoned ... read more

Getting to Sabah was a marathon 22hour effort! Every single one of our three flights was delayed. The flight from Melbourne to Sydney was delayed by one hour, which meant we had to clear customs, immigration and security at Sydney Airport in 20mins! Luckily we made it onto the plane and settled in for the flight to KL. Our flight to KL arrived about 15minutes late. We were catching a connecting Air Asia flight to Kota Kinabalu (KK) which apparently leaves from the Low Cost Terminal. We assumed that this meant we would walk to another area of the main airport which we thought would be pretty easy since we still had 45minutes, however the lady at information told us we had to take a 20minute taxi to reach the low cost terminal...hmm. So we joined ... read more

It was kind of nice arriving back in Bangkok as we already knew how to use the public transport system and were familiar with prices and the tourist sites. This time we stayed on Th Rambutri which is near the backpacker Mecca Khao San Road. On the first night we ran into Michael (from Vang Vieng) and spent the night at a random bar on Khao San Road. We finally retired to our hotels at about 3 in the morning after arranging to meet the following morning at the reasonable hour of 11am. We ended up grabbing a quick late breakfast on Th Rambutri and then set off for MBK. We spent the next 8 hours exploring the various levels and finally, after the boys heads were about to explode from shopping overload, set off to ... read more
