Phnom Penh was an extremely confronting city. It has come a long way since the Khmer Rouge took over the city on April 17, 1975, but still has a long way to go. The poverty is the most extreme that we have witnessed during all of our travels - it seems that everywhere you look there are street children begging and gesturing at their mouths for food. We struggled to find a half decent hotel, and eventually settled for one which was only just within our price range but looked as if we could have rented it by the hour. After a quick nap in our windowless, dank room we walked to the riverfront in search of somewhere slightly nicer to spend the following few nights. Luckily we managed to find a place which even included ... read more

Siem Reap airport is quite possibly the nicest one we have seen. It looks more like an expensive resort on a tropical island than the tourist hub that it is. We made it through immigration (after Scott chose the slowest line yet again) and caught a taxi out the front to take us to the hotel which had been recommended by Michael from Vang Vieng. The hotel turned out to be great, nice clean bright rooms and only 3months old plus it included free breakfast which is always nice. Our first 2 days were spent exploring Siem Reap and waiting for Kat to arrive from Phnom Penh. There’s not a whole lot to Siem Reap, it’s a small town that has grown quickly to support the 2 million tourists a year that pour through the temples, ... read more

We decided that after a month we would splurge on a slightly above average room. The room was definitely worth the $20 per night as it was clean, roomy, snazzy looking and even had a TV - which would have been great if we could speak fluent Lao. After settling in we headed out for lunch at an Indian place just near our hotel. The food was amazing, so delicious and cheap. Lunch was followed by a walk through the city, until Bianca decided she was feeling a bit odd so wanted to lie down. Back at the hotel she converted into her alter-ego ‘the Spewinator’ once again. As this wasn't the first random spew since food poisoning, it was pretty obvious that the antibiotics prescribed by the pharmacist in Thailand for food poisoning hadn't killed ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Vang Vieng February 5th 2008

The drive to Vang Vieng was really beautiful. Had the road been straight the trip probably would have taken about an hour. The scenery was really nice, the beautiful hills, the little villages with their AusAID/UNICEF water tanks and the truck which had crashed into the side of the mountain squashing the entire cabin... Vang Vieng is quite possibly the weirdest place we have visited so far. The main street is lined with restaurants with couches and cushions rather than seats so that you are nice and comfortable while watching countless episodes of Friends/Family Guy/The Simpson's and smoking/eating pretty much whatever drug you want from their happy menu. The day that we arrived it was pretty cold and foggy so we didn't really do anything. You couldn't even see the beautiful limestone mountains which surround the ... read more

Asia » Laos » West » Luang Prabang February 3rd 2008

Luang Prabang involved a lot of sitting on the internet watching the rain out the window - rain falling for the first time in 3 months and continuing basically the whole time we were there. We had originally planned on spending almost a week in Luang Prabang because we had heard really good things about it, however on our first day there we went to book our flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia and ended up having to catch a flight 2 days earlier than we were hoping. The city itself is really pretty. Its world heritage listed because of all the colonial/French buildings and the temples. As a result its one of the main stops on the tourist trail and because of the architecture it also gets a lot of older European tourists which means that ... read more

Somehow we managed to choose the one day of the dry season that it rained to catch a boat 6hours down the Mekong River....and it didn't just rain, it poured. We were woken up at about 4am by rain bucketing down and it still hadn't subsided when we boarded at 10am...and it continued ALL day. The slow boat is one of the 'must do' trips in Laos. It’s basically a 2 day ride down the Mekong River from Huay Xai (on the Thai border) to Luang Prabang in Northern/Central Laos. We had read many horror stories about the trip as the boats tend to be packed full of tourists until they practically overflow - there’s no guarantee of getting a seat, and all the available space is used, including inside the engine room. In order to ... read more

We arrived in Chiang Khong on the Thai-Lao border after a relatively comfortable, karaoke filled, 6hr bus ride from Chiang Mai in Thailand. Getting to Huay Xai, Laos from Chiang Khong involves hopping on a small boat and taking a two minute trip across to the other shore. When we arrived in Huay Xai we checked in at the Gibbon head office so we could begin our trek the following day. After a 2.5hour drive we arrived in a small village on the edge of the jungle. We met our guides and our 8 member group started the long walk to our tree house for that evening. After about an hour long uphill climb we reached a base camp where we were given harnesses so that we could go zipping. Zipping involves clipping yourself onto steel ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai January 22nd 2008

Chiang Mai was an effort to get to. An early morning flight from Yangon to Bangkok, a few hours waiting and then another flight to Chiang Mai with Bianca suffering from food poisoning the whole way - not fun. Unfortunately the hotel we intended on staying in was full, so we settled for the first one we came across and that was it for day 1. The following day we moved hotel to a cheaper, but nicer place with a soft bed (first time in a long time). Bianca was still exhausted from being sick so we didn't do a lot except for go to the night market that evening. The night market was very much tourist orientated - it sold tonnes of touristy t-shirts and other junk and we cruised around till it was time ... read more

Asia » Burma » Yangon Region » Yangon January 20th 2008

On arrival back in Yangon, we grabbed a taxi back to Motherland Inn. Allegedly, the price of a taxi ride had doubled from 5000K in only one and a half weeks...but amazingly dropped back down in the time it took us to walk the 10 meters from inside the airport car park to the street. Scott jokingly suggested we go to Tokyo Fried Chicken for lunch - the Burmese equivalent of KFC - so we did. It made KFC look quite gourmet. At least their burger patties are the colour of chicken and their coleslaw doesn't look like vanilla ice cream...hmm. After lunch we headed to Scott (Bogyoke Aung San) Market which is a massive indoor market mainly targeted to locals, but with the obligatory souvenirs and tourists t-shirts. There is also quite a large jewellery ... read more

Asia » Burma » Mandalay Region » Inle Lake January 17th 2008

We arrived in Inle Lake via Heho Airport which was amazingly high-tech. The baggage carousel was the best we've seen so far and consisted of a group of guys ferrying the bags directly from the plane and plonking them on the arrivals hall floor. After collecting our bags we had about an hour long taxi ride through the mountains before we arrived in Nyuang Shwe which is where most tourists base themselves in the area. The first day we took it pretty easy and explored the town a bit which took all of about two minutes. We had lunch at a little Indian place with the cutest friendliest cat we have seen so far! It jumped up on knee and made itself comfortable which made Bianca’s day. After lunch we booked in for a horse-trek for ... read more
