On leaving Bagan, Scott managed to score himself an unexpected souvenir - Food poisoning. So following a long and sleepless night for both of us, we boarded a plane and headed for Mandalay feeling a tad worse for wear. Given the state of Scott's stomach our first day in Mandalay was pretty much all spent in bed catching up on sleep. The following day we emerged from our room and picked up a guide from outside our hotel to take us on a tour around the city. First off we headed to an old teak monastery, followed by a few things such as gold leaf factories, marble statue carvers and tapestry makers. From here we went to the Mandalay palace and fort that wasnt actually that old. The original was destroyed by a fire and has ... read more

After a short flight from Yangon the four of us arrived in Bagan. Bagan is kind of like an alien planet, and you notice this before the plane has even landed just looking out the window. It's a difficult sight to explain but basically there are over 4000 stupa's, pagoda's and monasteries across the skyline in all directions as far as you can see. We spent three days in total in Bagan in a town called Nyaung Oo which was only about two streets big. It seemed that about half the town was tourist restaurants, 99% of which had no customers at all because of the low numbers of tourists in the country this year. For our first day we hired two horse and carts to take us around the main sites. Calling these animals horses ... read more

We've started to write these blogs about two weeks after they actually happened because of the horrible internet access around the country. Now that we're in Yangon and have a few minutes to spare, we thought we would catch everyone up on our trip so far...and maybe, just maybe be able to upload a picture or two. We arrived at Yangon International airport at about 9am local time...which was an hour after we were supposed to arrive because our plane was delayed in Bangkok. Yangon international was nothing like you'd expect, it was basically brand spanking new and had a huge and still mainly empty arrivals hall and customs area. Our hotel (Motherland 2) arranges free airport pickup and also pick up random tourists who don't know where they are going to stay yet. The taxi ... read more

Bianca: Yesterday we set off for the Mekong Delta. We got up nice and early so we were ready to be picked up at 7...at 7:30 Scott decided we should get the hotel to call the tour company and see where they were...a car turned up for us about 15 minutes later. We met the rest of our group (who were all much older) at the dock and hopped onto a boat, only to find out that we were short a seat, so Scott spent the trip (the whole 3 hours) sitting on a step. After about 3 hours we arrived at My Tho, the closest town in the Delta to Saigon. We hopped off the boat and sat in the lobby of a random hotel for more of the group to arrive. We then got ... read more

Today took us first to the Reunification Palace, the home to the pre-Communist government until its fall at the end of the war. At the front of the palace are two tanks from the famous photo of the communists crashing through the palace gates and another fighter jet which apparently dropped a bomb there. The palace itself is a bit disappointing to look at, it sort of looks like an aging hotel from the 60's or 70's that needs a bit of doing up. The inside of the palace was also very dated (obviously) but has a lot of big open spaces. After the palace we found that our next destination, the War Remnants Museum was shut for lunch, so we took an hour long cyclo ride to some temples. The temples were different to what ... read more

Bianca: Today we went on a day trip to the Cao Dai temple and the Cu Chi Tunnels. We were picked up from our hotel at 8:15 by the snazziest mini-bus we've seen the whole time we've been away. After picking up everyone else we set off to the Cao Dai Temple. We arrived at about 11:30, which gave us enough time to look around the temple before the ceremony started at 12. Cao Dai is a religion which is unique to Vietnam...its a combination of all religions so their beliefs are quite interesting and tolerant. The temple its self is weird...its so modern! The religion only started in the mid 1900's so everything was really new in comparison to the other temple's we've visited. After taking photos of the empty temple, we headed up stairs ... read more

Last night was Tet (Lunar New Year) and we were invited to a party in our hotel lobby. At 10pm we made our way down (about a million flights of stairs) to the lobby for a huge dinner. Dinner was really nice...we shared it with an American (and his Thai fiance...about 40 years his junior...he was 73), a German commercial pilot and his girlfriend and a lot of other hotel guests who sat at different tables. Unfortunately the hotel staff didn't eat with us, which was quite a shame. I think they were still in staff looking after guests mode. It would have been nicer if they had joined in on the fun too. At midnight we all went up to the roof top and watched the fireworks. The had some cool ones...but nothing compared to ... read more

Nha Trang was exhausting and not really the greatest city we've been too. We both agreed that the place was very touristy, and that if it didnt have a beach it wouldnt even rate a mention on the tourist map. Bianca and I enrolled into a four day Open Water diver course at one of the many dive centres there. The course pretty much consisted of 2 days of classroom style learning (watching instructional/propaganda videos) and then diving in a Navy pool in the afternoons. Following those two days were two more days consisting of 2 dives per day out in the ocean. Bianca: When we arrived at the dive centre on the first morning and met our instructor...i wouldn't have chosen that dive centre had i known that she would be our instructor as i ... read more
