We had a relatively consistent power supply during our whole time in Kathmandu, either through mains or the back-up generator so neither of us considered what would happen when we were awoken by our alarm at 5.40am (which is pre-sunrise). As we flicked the switch a few times we realized how stupid it was to have left our head torches buried somewhere in our packs as it seems that neither the mains or generator is switched on at that ridiculously early hour. We fumbled around in our pitch black room and occasionally used our phones for light but somehow we managed to gather everything together and head downstairs with everything (or at least everything that we have required since…). The bus ride to Pokhara was relatively uneventful. We seemed to be making quite good time and ... read more

Our grand plans for our third day in Kathmandu were slightly interrupted by a nationwide strike ordered by the Maoists as protest against the governments ‘excessive use of force’. Basically there were about 15,000 people squatting illegally in a forest so the government sent the police in to clear them out. Only the squatters didn’t like this so much so they grabbed their knives and sticks and retaliated so the police used some more force and ended up killing 4 of the squatters. So the Maoists declared a strike. Our taxi driver from the previous day had warned us about the strike, but we thought it was just the taxis and maybe some businesses…so when we ventured out we were quite shocked. Everything was closed; ATM’s were locked up, shops and restaurants were shut, there were ... read more

The trip from Delhi to Kathmandu began with another rude awakening, this time at the ungodly hour of 4.30am. We tumbled out of bed and into an auto rickshaw for the 40 or so minute journey. It was a bit chilly so we thought to ask the driver to turn the heater up…but then we realized that rickshaws don’t have heaters…they also don’t have walls or windows either, but oh well, nothing like a 60km/h headwind to wake you up in the morning. The departures terminal of Delhi airport is pretty decent, it has foot massaging machines and free wifi (if you have an Indian mobile). We grabbed some Subway for breakfast, and apparently fast food chains around the world intentionally hire the dumbest and least motivated people they can find because they guy who served us ... read more

At the crack of dawn the two of us hauled ourselves from our bed and began the next phase of our India trip. A quick 2 minute walk saw us at New Delhi train station - a bustling 24 hour station with half the population of India rushing from platform to platform. Because India has such a good train system the railway is an interesting place as people from all walks of life - from rich to poor - use the network. For some reason we had first class tickets which meant our journey was a lot more luxurious than our usual forms of travel. As it was a morning train we knew that we would be served some kind of breakfast. In other countries train food has been pretty average, however for its first class ... read more

Our trip from Melbourne to Delhi was broken up by a 12 hour stopover in KL, Malaysia. We arrived at about 8am and had a maccas breakfast and then checked into a hotel near LCCT for three hours so we could nap and shower. Our friends Mira and Khalid then picked us up from the hotel and took us to the delicious Yemini restaurant near their house in Cyberjaya. We had a delicious lunch; Scott had lamb kapsa and I had chicken kebabs - both dishes came with a massive mound of delicious rice which is cooked with ghee and various yummy spices. We then went back to their flat and met their puppy and then headed to the airport. Our flight had been delayed by 2 hours, so we had 5 hours to fill in…luckily ... read more

When we got off the bus from Probolinggo in Java, we were swamped by taxi drivers...one of them got my attention by saying “excuse me miss, taxi with meter”. “Meter” is not a word which is commonly used by taxi drivers in Asia until you twist their arm. Normally we make an effort to avoid using the taxi drivers who harass you, but this guy was polite which was a nice change so we all climbed into his taxi and, amazingly, he turned the meter on. He got us to our street in Sanur easily enough, however couldn’t seem to find the hotel. He kept saying to call the hotel...which we were reluctant to do because we figured he would charge us an exorbitant amount for the phone call. However, we eventually gave in and he ... read more

Mt. Bromo was a marathon effort to get to, luckily it was worth it. We boarded a minibus in Yogya at 9am in the morning, picked up all the other passengers, including an Indonesian Catholic nun who was going to her new convent in Probolinggo. Our ride was uneventful, uncomfortable and horribly long. We had a quick stop for lunch and a few toilet breaks, but basically drove for 10.5hrs straight. After 10 and a half hours we changed to another minibus which drove us another hour or so to our hotel Cemoro Lewang...all up we spent 12hrs on the bus (excluding time for lunch) which meant when we eventually arrived it was close to 11.30pm. The following morning when our alarm went off at 3.30am I was tempted to throw the phone across the other ... read more

Our train ride from Bandung was horrible. The 8 hours trip began at 8pm, which meant we arrived in Yogya at 4am after a sleepless night. Unsurprisingly, as it was 4am, the town was still asleep so we decided to try our luck and turn up at the hotel we had booked. Fortunately two of the three rooms we had reserved were available so we all crawled into bed and finally got some sleep. We spent our first day touring the sites of Yogya. We had a relatively slow start after getting up at about 10am however after breakfast we caught a taxi to the Kraton, the huge walled city in the centre of Yogya, and went straight to the Sultan’s Palace. The entry fee includes a guide, which was lucky because otherwise the palace would ... read more

The train ride from Jakarta to Bandung was really enjoyable. The train snakes its way through the mountains past little villages, rice terraces and tea plantations. Bandung has a much cooler climate than Jakarta and as a result a lot of people from Jakarta head there for the weekend. The town itself has 3 million people and is the regional capital of West Java. At the train station a local from the ‘Tourist Information Centre’ attached himself to us and walked us to the hotel we had selected from the Lonely Planet guide. The hotel was revolting - small, cramped and musty with tiny beds and even smaller bathrooms. Sometimes it seems that once a hotel gets a mention in lonely planet their standards drop and their prices increase. Luckily the guy from the TIC pointed ... read more
