We arrived in Şanlıurfa (Urfa for short) after two flights from Van. The first leg from Van to Istanbul started boarding after we were due to take off so by the time we arrived in Istanbul we didn’t have long to wait before boarding our next flight from Istanbul to Urfa. After landing in Urfa we caught the shuttle bus into the city past the pistachio trees, olive groves, grape vines and cotton plants. The shuttle bus stops at a petrol station outside the old city so from there we caught a short taxi to our hotel. As soon as we entered the old city I was glad we had decided to visit Urfa despite its proximity to Syria and PKK activity in surrounding towns (Urfa itself seems to be fine at the moment). We finally arrived at our hotel in Van at about 9pm local time, after over 24 hours of travel from Melbourne. Our first flight from Melbourne landed us in Doha with enough time between flights to go through security (after standing in a long line for a long time) and get to our gate with about 30 minutes to spare. Our second flight to Istanbul almost resulted in the murder of the morbidly obese man who snored loudly from take-off to landing. After landing in Istanbul we waited in line at immigration while listening to some woman screaming at the security staff, got our passports stamped, grabbed our bags (mine was nearly the last to hit the carousel) and waited for our prearranged transfer to Istanbul’s other airport. After an hour and a half drive (top ... read more

We left Hiroshima for Osaka on our last shinkansen (fast train) of the trip. About two hours later we arrived at our guest house in the area near Shinsaibashi station known as Amerika-mura. Amerika-mura got its name as after the war a lot of shops sprang up selling American products such as zippo lighters. The name stuck and there are now a lot of funky restaurants, shops and bars (as well as a few pachinko venues too). After dropping off our bags at the guest house we headed out to grab some lunch. We, strangely, decided on a burger restaurant called Mos Burgers which is a Japanese chain. We ordered our food and sat down at a table and waited until our freshly cooked burgers (teriyaki beef for Scott and chicken for me) were delivered. The ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hiroshima » Hiroshima September 24th 2014

We arrived in Hiroshima at about 10am which was just over two hours after we left Kyoto. We dropped our bags off at our hotel and set off on foot towards the Atomic Bomb Dome. It took us about half an hour to walk to the dome from our hotel. Along the way we passed heaps of shopping malls and restaurants. The dome is located in the middle of Hiroshima and a lovely park with memorials and a museum have been constructed around it. I always find it strange seeing sites in person that I have seen in books or on TV my whole life and the A-Bomb Dome was no different. I think it was slightly smaller than I expected. A number of signs have been erected around the building which is fenced off from ... read more

Day 1 We left Kanazawa at lunchtime and arrived in Kyoto about 2 hours later. We managed to easily navigate our way through the station to catch the subway and then managed to choose the correct exit at Shijo station (pure skill of course, nothing to do with luck). After checking into our home for the next 6 nights we (I) sat down with the Lonely Planet to go through my temple / shrine shortlist and assign days for each area of the city. After planning our next 5 days we went for a walk. Our hotel was on Shijo-dori, near Karasuma-dori, which is the main shopping areas in Kyoto. This meant that after only about a 5 minute walk we ended up surrounded by malls and shops on either side of the street. We came ... read more

Asia » Japan » Ishikawa » Kanazawa September 16th 2014

We arrived in Kanazawa a little over an hour after we left Shirakawa-go. We recognised the name of a bank on the map we had from our guest house so set off for our home for the next few nights. Although the walk was only about 5 minutes we were a little confused by one of the intersections – there aren’t a whole lot of street signs in Japan. Fortunately a lovely Japanese woman took pity on us and ended up walking us to our hostel (which was in the opposite direction to where she was headed). When we arrived at the front door we found that it was closed for the next hour so found a nearby 7-11 where we could get a snack and use their wifi. While standing around out the front with ... read more

Asia » Japan » Gifu » Shirakawa-go September 13th 2014

Shirakawa-go is a region in the mountains between Takayama and Kanazawa. Shirakawa-go, and neighbouring Gokayama are UNESCO world heritage sites which are famous for their traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses. The farm houses have very steeply peaked thatched roofs which are said to resemble the hands of monks pressed together in prayer. In winter they can get up to two meters of snow in the region, hence the steeply peaked roofs. We reached Shirakawa-go by bus which took about an hour from Takayama. The trip was spent mostly in tunnels so we didn’t get to see much scenery at all! We arrived at about 11am on a Saturday of a long weekend (the following Monday was a public holiday for ‘respect for the aged’ day). We had booked a room in one of the gassho-zukuri houses which had ... read more

Asia » Japan » Gifu » Takayama September 12th 2014

We arrived in Takayama about 4 hours after we left Tokyo. We actually got kicked off our first Shinkansen (fast train) as our JR rail pass didn’t cover that train. Kicked off sounds a lot more dramatic than it was; in fact we got numerous apologies from the man checking tickets, a bow and a please change at the next station. Takayama is a town of about 90,000 people to the north west of Tokyo in the mountains. It is famous for its traditional houses which line some of the main streets in the town. Our train was met at the station by a car from our home for the next three nights – a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn). We were shown to our tatami mat room by one of the staff who explained how the ... read more

Our three week trip to Japan began just after midnight at Melbourne airport where we hopped on a luxurious AirAsia flight to Kuala Lumpur. The flight was very uneventful (just how flights should be!) and we both managed to get a little sleep. We arrived at the new KLIA2 airport which was slightly fancier than the old LCCT terminal which has been the base for many of our trips. The new building only opened in May and there are still quite a few incomplete areas but overall it was a huge improvement. After passing through immigration and collecting our bags we checked into our flight to Japan and then passed back through immigration. As we had a 7 hour layover we had decided to splurge and get a room at one of the airport hotels for ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago September 27th 2013

After an overnight stop in Lima we headed back to the airport for our 8:30 flight from Lima to Santiago. Breakfast was a delicious feast of McDonalds (hmm) before passing through security and settling into the chairs at our gate. After an uneventful flight (just the way you want them to be!) we arrived in Santiago. We weren’t originally planning on visiting Santiago, however as our original flight home had been cancelled and we’d been moved to the flight the following day we now had a 33hour stop over. On arrival we headed to the information desk for our airline to organise for them to pay the 95USD per person reciprocity fee Australians have to pay to enter the country. After that was taken care of we had to wait for them to fetch our bags ... read more
