Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Ronda May 2nd 2017

We left Granada bright and early (actually not bright as the sun wasn't up yet) to catch the bus and train to Ronda. We opted for the 6:45 am train in order to make the most of our time in Ronda, but unfortunately the weather had other ideas. The south of Spain has been experiencing a drought, so of course it was raining. After catching a taxi to the station so we wouldn't get too wet we caught the bus back to where we had changed from the train on the way to Granada and then transferred to the train which took us all the way to Ronda. There are remains of Neolitic Age settlements around Ronda, including the Cueva de la Pileta caves. Ronda was first settled by the Celts, then Phoenician, then of course ... read more

The trip from Sevilla to Granada took about 3.5 hours; approximately 2 hours were by train but then we had to switch to a bus for the final part of the journey due to track improvement / upgrade works (which seem to have been going since about 2015 according to various blog posts). After arriving in Granada we walked about 20 minutes until we reached our AirBNB which was in the old city of Granada, adjacent to the Albayzin neighbourhood. Granada, which was previously inhabited by the Romans and Visigoths, was conquered by the Moors in 755 AD. In the 11th century, following a civil war, a Berber chief established an independent kingdom called the Taifa of Granada in the region. The Almoravids ruled Granada from 1090 followed by the Almohad dynasty from 1166 until 1238 ... read more

We arrived in Sevilla 45 minutes after we departed the train station in Cordoba. From the train station it was about a half hour walk to our AirBNB in the centre of the shopping district of Sevilla. Our first impression of Sevilla wasn't great as the area around the train station is a bit average looking, however as we got closer to our AirBNB things started to improve. Seville was founded by the Romans approximately 2,200 years ago. After the Romans came the Vandals, Suebi and Visigoths. It was taken by the Moors in 712 and remained under their control until it was conquered by King Ferdinand III of Castile and Leon in 1247. The Spanish Inquisition held it's first tribunal in Seville in 1478. After the discovery of the New World by Christopher Colombus in ... read more

We left Cordoba in the morning and headed south towards Cordoba in Andalusia. Along the way we planned to stop at Consuegra to check out the famous Milinos de Viento (windmills). We only took one wrong turn on our way out of Toledo (which resulted in a 16km long u-turn). After about an hour we turned a corner and saw the windmills perched on top of the hill next to the castle; this style of windmill was made famous in the novel Don Quixote (which is set in this part of Spain). We drove through the little town at the bottom of the hill and made our way up to the car park beside the windmills. When I stepped out of the car I was almost blown over by the incredibly strong wind! I clung to ... read more

We left Barcelona in the morning on a fast train headed to Madrid. The approximately 600 kms journey only took about 2.5 hours. The train was very comfortable although not quite as smooth as the Chinese and Japanese high speed trains we have taken in the past. After leaving the train we found a store to purchase a SIM card for our phone. We then headed back into the station to pick up our hire car. Our hire cars seem to be getting better each time we rent one...this time we ended up with a new Audi A1. We drove out of the station and found our way to the motorway (autovia) to Toledo after only a few wrong turns. The journey to Toledo from Madrid took about an hour. The drive was pleasant as the ... read more

We arrived in Barcelona, the first stop on our 5 week Spain, Morocco and Paris trip, about 24 hours after leaving Melbourne. The journey was painless, however the we spent the next 2.5 hours in the immigration queue. I suppose that was our punishment for flying into Spain on the first public holiday of Semana Santa (Easter). By the time we arrived at our hotel we were both pretty tired so we had a short nap before heading out to explore. We wandered north from our hotel along Passeig de Gracia past Casa Batllo and Casa Mila. We then ventured into the small back streets and wandered around admiring the architecture until it was time to meet up with Scott's work colleague Nat and her boyfriend Evan. Nat and Evan had spent the past four weeks ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Gangwon-do » Sokcho October 1st 2016

On our final morning in Danyang we awoke to steady rain which didn't look like it would let up anytime soon. We packed up our room, had breakfast and then set off towards Sokcho, via Gangneung. The majority of the trip from Danyang to Gangneung was on rural roads; it took about three hours and along the way we passed farms, mountains and industrial estates... We drove straight through Gangneung and headed on towards Unification (Tongil) Park which is just outside the city on the coast. Unification Park houses the North Korean submarine which was captured during the 1996 Gangneung Infiltration Incident. The submarine was used to transport a reconnaissance team to the South, but it all went wrong when they tried to collect the team and the submarine ran aground. The 25 North Koreans abandoned ... read more

We arrived in Danyang around lunchtime having left Gyeongju earlier that morning. After lunch we went for a walk through the market. We'd read a few blogs about Danyang before we arrived which said that you can see more garlic than you've seen in your whole life at the Danyang market; being garlic lovers we were fairly skeptical about this. After having walked two out of the three aisles of the market without seeing much garlic we were were certain the author must have been smoking something funny, but as we turned into the last section we were proved wrong! So. Much. Garlic! After taking some photos we headed to the black garlic bread shop and purchased a few to sample. They were quite sweet which was a little odd, but they were definitely edible though ... read more

We arrived in Gyeongju, which is in the south-east of Korea, about 5 hours after leaving Seoul. The drive was quite pleasant as the roads are decent. There are a lot of fixed speed cameras in Korea apparently; and they're all signed which means that drivers seem to go as fast as they like between cameras and then slow down rapidly just before a camera and then speed up again.. Pretty sure that's not the point of the cameras. After checking into our hotel we headed out to grab some food. Scott had noticed a Chinese restaurant on the drive to our hotel and had his heart set on that so we set off hoping that they would still be open despite it being 8pm. They were open but we're not entirely sure if that was ... read more

Asia » South Korea » Seoul September 22nd 2016

We decided to combine my work trip to Korea with a bit of a holiday as it's one of the few Asian countries (depending on your definition of Asia) we haven't yet explored. Our flight from Melbourne to Seoul included a brief stop over in Sydney; we arrived at the gate for the second leg of the trip just as boarding was commencing...perfect timing. After another 10.5 hour flight we landed in Seoul, grabbed our bags and hopped into a taxi. About an hour later we arrived at our hotel in Sinsa, which is on the southern side of the Han River. After checking in and dropping off our bags we headed out for a walk around our hotel. Our hotel was located nearby Garosu-gil which is one of the main shopping streets in Seoul. After ... read more
