Geo: 36.15, 137.24We let ourselves enjoy sleep again. Or at least tried. Our room here at Country Hotel is fascinating. All I can think is how our tall friends would probably die. Everything is built for short people like me lol. The bed is also rock hard. Like I'm pretty sure the ground is softer when I go camping!! That being said, Chris and I were both so tired we slept like rocks. Probably the best sleep I've had yet. Most of our group barely rested, though. Another interesting room feature- the electricity only works when the key tag is inserted into the wall of our room. Took us a good 15min to figure that one out. We didn't tell Michelle how it worked for our own amusement- which lasted most of the day. She found ... read more

Geo: 36.15, 137.24Today was finally an easier day!I needed the sleep but I couldn't get any more after about 730am. So, I.got up and dressed ahead of everyone and set out by myself to get breakfast and coffee. I found a bakery recommended by our Airbnb host- picked up some wheat bread that ended up being some kind of sourdough and a couple lattes for me and Chris. I tried to find butter for my bread and failed lol. Oh well. Bread was good by itself. We checked out of our Airbnb at 915am and made our way to Takayama via four trains. For once, the travel was uneventful. :) The scenery was beautiful as we passed snow capped mountains, terraced hillsides, rivers and waterfalls.Takayama is a small mountain town. We checked into Country Hotel and our ... read more

Geo: 35.67, 139.77Of course, our one full day to explore Tokyo, it's raining buckets nearly the entire day. This ended up being the second longest day this trip, starting at 4am and ending shortly after midnight.I was a little worried about getting around so early in the morning- the trains and subways don't start up again until 5am. But we needed to be out and about earlier than that for our sushi quest at Tsukiji fish market. I tried to book a taxi ahead of time online but that didn't pan out. Our Airbnb host assured us taxis would be readily on hand, even at 4:30am. And he was totally right. We walked out to the major street right outside our house and within a minute two taxis were approaching. We hailed them both and head ... read more

Geo: 36.8451, 139.051We slept for about six hours, and then it was time to head out for our day trip to Takaragawa onsen way out in Gunma prefecture. Assuming all went well, it would be about two hours by train plus a half hour bus ride. Of course things didn't go well. Lol. We left at 7am to take the subway to Shinjuku station. Me, Chris, Eric and Beth weren't using our 7 day rail pass yet. So we needed to buy a ticket to Minakami. Then Billy, Mai and Michelle decided to run back to the house and grab their rail passes so they could activate theirs. Huge mistake splitting up. They barely made the right train in time. Ironically, we had plenty of time, even bought coffee and pastries, and missed the right train. ... read more

Geo: 35.67, 139.77We arrived safely in Tokyo!Eric and Beth got to our house about 630am. All four of us carpooled to the airport together. We made very good time considering it was Monday morning commute time. We ate incredibly expensive breakfast burritos in our terminal, and even had time to read before boarding for our flight. The flight to Japan was fairly uneventful. We were crammed into tiny seats with no leg room. I was really irritated because I expected to have a personal monitor or to at least be able to rent an iPad with movies for the long flight like we have on other airlines in the past. No such luck and boy was I disappointed. All United offered were the movies on the tiny monitors in the aisles. Half were movies I'd already seen, ... read more

Geo: 33.8327, -117.916We decided to pack up early, load the car and check out so we could grab breakfast. If you're ever in the L.A. or Anaheim area, I highly recommend Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles. We've always had great service and the chicken 'n waffles are effing amazing. I know they're all the rage these days but I was going to Roscoe's years ago BEFORE that craze started. Now they've expanded to multiple locations, one of which happened to be a quarter mile from our condo. YESSSS. It was so damned good. I love just eating the chicken, waffle 'n syrup, dipping it in the gravy and eating it all together in one bite. The waitress even gave us a free sample of their mac 'n cheese. On par with what homemade baked mac n cheese ... read more

Geo: 33.8327, -117.916We started the day off with coffee and mimosas and nice clear view of Anaheim from our balcony window. =) Then it was off for a full day in Disneyland!dWe hit up all of our favorite rides. We kept wondering what drama would befall us that day but literally nothing crazy happened. We got on Splash Mountain with virtually no wait in the line. Rides kept breaking down this weekend, and we managed to get to the ride right as it reopened. This is my favorite ride in both parks. It's just so damned happy and fun. =D For lunch, Anna and I slipped out to Downtown Disney to get Earl of Sandwich and some wine. Then I realized Chris had my ticket to get back in so he had to come rescue me. ... read more

Geo: 33.8327, -117.916We got up at the crap hour of 4am. Most of us work so we were limited to a 3 day trip. The cheapest Disneyland tickets were ironically 3 day park hoppers. So... We ended up doing two partial days and one full day. We made the long drive down I-5 and got to Anaheim around 11am. Not bad timing! We did most of the checking in process to our condo but the rooms weren't ready yet so we just headed over to the park. My sister Geneva made Galen and I some badass crocheted Disney hats. My Minnie hat had a detachable bow (she made three other bows in other colors). Even though it was February, it was already incredibly warm outside. The next two days the heat would reach into the 80s ... read more

Geo: 37.948, -119.788On our drive the day before, we saw that Hetch Hetchy Reservoir was open. I hadn't ever been there that I could remember, and I've been trying to do at least one new "thing" every visit to Yosemite for awhile now. So, we decided we'd head there today. As it turned out, we were the ONLY visitors there that morning. And, unlike the rest of the park, they actually take down licenses and give temporary "passes" for visitors entering the park towards the dam. My brother, later, made a good point- it's a huge reservoir that supplies water for San Francisco and much of the East Bay Area. Of course they regulate it. BUT, we had the whole place to ourselves. There was a rock slide on the loop road near the dam so ... read more

Geo: 37.7163, -119.665I woke up the next morning around our usual time in the 7 o'clock hour. Arya sleeps like clockwork- in bed at night about 6pm and up by 8am at the latest. Even on vacation. First things first, I made my coffee. They had a coffee pot but I stuck to my Via since it was faster. I walked outside on the icy porch with my mug- the sun was coming out and it was a beautiful day. =D Lucky us- earlier in the week it was snow storming. We all ate breakfast and then packed up in the car for a day trip to Yosemite Valley. As we pulled up to the park entrance (only about fifteen minutes up the road) we saw people putting chains on their tires already. Looks like chain control ... read more
