Geo: 39.9165, 116.391Day 3: I had a good breakfast at Novotel Hotel and I set off for Summer Palace using the subway line to station Xiyuan, I walked 10 minutes north wards to reach the west gate of Summer Palace. The Area surrounding the Summer Palace is very vast, scenic as it was Imperial family's summer retreat, I walked around the ancient pavilions, mansions, temples, bridges, with set of corridors, gazebos set on the lake, all incredibly beautiful. There is a little Island in the lake after you cross the bridge with 17 arches, though there were no boats in November, I prefered the Summer Palace to Forbidden City. Then I took the subway Normal 0 Beigongmen from the... read more

Geo: 39.9165, 116.391 Tiananmen Square Day 2: I got up early and headed to Tiananmen Square, which has huge mausoleum to Chairman Mao and the long queues to see his mummified body. At the end of Tiananmen Square lies the Gate of Heavenly Peace and portrait of Mao hangs above the main entrance. The gate marks the beginning of the Forbidden City, which was off limits for 500 years apart from the Emperor, his family and staff. The price for uninvited admission was instant execution. The Forbidden City The Forbidden City covers vast area with many building. This inner city, housed all the people and supplies that were necessary for the Emperor. There are many tourists here but I started very early in morning to avoid crowds and I also enjoyed the Imperial gardens which are ... read more

Geo: 39.9165, 116.391 Day One: I reached the Beijing airport at 5.50am, my plan for the day was to take the 9 am School Bus to the Mutianyu wall section. The Mutianyu section which is near the Beijing airport is much better and nicer than the Badling section which is nearer the Beijing City but is very crowded. At the Beijing airport, I took the taxi from the official queue, the taxi driver was a good man; he kept the taxi- meter on and agreed to wait while I put the luggage at the hotel. I showed him the letterhead with hotel name written in Chinese as many people in Beijing do not speak English. The staff at Novotel Xinquio, were v slow and took a long time that the taxi driver got worried but eventually ... read more

(One agent quoted me £99). You can also do it through post and pay extra for postage, or you can apply at the centre. If you apply at the centre then you have to book online appointment and drop the form / passport and collect it after 4 days for regular service. It took me 15 mins to drop and 25 mins to pick up (I was there at lunch time). There is Visas centre in London and Manchester. For the UK passport holders here are the steps to getting Chinese visas directly :) Go on website www.visaforchina.org.uk/visaen/visaView.html… If you are in London ... read more
