Hey, I’m still alive and well! The last several months have been hectic in some respects but very relaxing and enjoyable in others. Kay and I arrived in Florida on November 23, 2010 – the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. I went to the VA Hospital in Gainesville to effect a change of address to my Aunt Lena’s home in Sanford FL so I could pick up my VA correspondence at her home instead of having it forwarded from Rockford. Here’s a short note for those who know me. I had believed PTSD was all about flashbacks and nightmares but recently learned that insomnia and affiliation difficulties are also symptoms of PTSD. I have been taking a mild sleep aid prescribed by the VA and am feeling much more rested and energetic. I expected my PTSD treatment would ... read more

North America » United States » Florida » Saint Augustine April 30th 2011

Here is my V-E-R-Y tardy blog from April 2011. Sorry, folks. St. Augustine FL is about 1-1/2 hours northwest of our winter 2010-11 home in Sanford. Because there is so much to see and do in St. Augustine, we ruled out commuting, hooked up the Pilgrim and set out for a week in this delightful, historic destination. We arrived at the Stagecoach RV Park on Sunday, April 24, 2011 set up camp and relaxed for the rest of the day. I guess being stationary since December got me out of “set-up” shape! Stagecoach isn’t a destination park, but who needs a lot of amenities when the entertainment is a few miles away? The sites are level and spacious with a good amount of shade, and the internet is strong and dependable. The owners assured me that ... read more

On Tuesday, October 19, 2010, we crossed the Potomac River on US 340 en route to North Fork Resort in Front Royal VA. Front Royal was selected for its location at the northern entrance to the Shenandoah National Park. Skyline Drive, Shenandoah’s scenic roadway, follows the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains southward for 105 miles. There it joins the Blue Ridge Parkway which stretches 469 miles to the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Our plan was to migrate south as the leaves changed and to enjoy the colors of fall for the entire trip to northern GA - erroneously believing that the turning of the leaves was mostly latitude-dependent. In fact, leaf color changes are much more altitude-dependent! I didn’t want to drag the Pilgrim along 574 miles of ridgeline and to ... read more

On Tuesday morning, October 5, 2010 we worked our way to MD 97 from Greenbelt MD, turned northwest on MD 140 toward Taneytown and then southwest on US 15 toward Thurmont and Cunningham Falls State Park. Even as we made our way to Thurmont on this splendid fall day, flowers sporadically decorated the roadside. We reflected on our time in the District as we drove and were pleased with our accomplishments, but we fully realized there remains much more to see and experience. Only a few blocks from the campground was the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Mount Vernon is just across the Potomac River and the US Marine Corps Museum is in Quantico VA. In the District, we missed the Library of Congress, the Pentagon and the National Geographic Museum just to name a few. ... read more

We pulled out of the Hononagah Forest Preserve on Tuesday, September 17, 2010 with an element of mixed emotion. On the one hand, we got a lot of elective work done on the Pilgrim to make it more livable and had several routine maintenance tasks performed to keep her “land worthy” for the next segment of “The Great Adventure.” On the other hand, there were numerous family members and friends we didn’t get to see for a variety of reasons. Without question, we were looking forward to our Washington DC visit. Some time back, I had requested a tour of the White House through our Silver City born and raised US Senator Jeff Bingaman and, while in Rockford, had received word that our request had been approved for Friday, September 17. Also, Senator Bingaman’s aide had ... read more

Let’s go back into ancient history and get y’all caught up. Internet availability has been sporadic, we’ve been busy, libraries under renovation, yadda, yadda, yadda!!! Most importantly, travelblog.org has had ISSUES!!! They have revised their software and have had hardware problems. I connot (or don't know how) to get rid of the "flags" on the map so y'all can have a clear image. I'll try to get it sorted out before the next blog. Bear with me, please. We had kept quite busy during our week in Independence MO and had skipped a couple of attractions in nearby Liberty MO that we probably would have included had we allotted more time. Indeed, Kansas City is on the “return to” list. Since Liberty was on the way to St Joseph and since the drive to St Joseph ... read more

On Friday, June 25, 2010 we departed the Big Red Barn RV Park in Carthage MO under brilliant blue skies en route to the Stadium RV Park in Independence MO. Our journey north on US 71 only took about 2-1/2 hours; however, we had planned a stop at the Harry S. Truman Birthplace State Historic Site in Lamar MO. John and Martha Truman bought the house for $685 in 1882 before Harry was born on May 8, 1884. They lived there until they moved to Independence when Harry was six. The United Auto Workers bought the house, restored it and donated it to the State of Missouri. Former President Truman attended the dedication on April 19, 1959. Interesting and worth traveling US 71 instead of US 69 between Joplin and Kansas City. Thanks to Irene’s precise ... read more

North America » United States » Missouri » Joplin June 23rd 2010

Even though scattered thunderstorms were in the forecast, Wednesday morning June 16, 2010 was another blue-sky morning. The drive to the Joplin MO area was only about 1-1/2 hours. Since I wanted to stop at the Missouri Welcome Center, we started northbound on I-540. Like many interstate highways under development, I-540 is a controlled access highway in those sections that have been completed and a two- or four-lane highway in those segments that have not - in this case, US 71. The only portion of our route that was not controlled access was a thirteen-mile stretch right at the AR-MO line. Originally, we had planned to stop at the Veterans Wall of Honor in Bella Vista AR on the way to Joplin. When we visited the monument on June 11, I was baffled at the volume ... read more

As I was laying out the route from Russellville AR to the Winn-Creek RV Park and Retreat in Winslow AR, I found there was no uncomplicated way to make the journey without backtracking to Fort Smith. Obviously, revisiting those visual stimuli was not my itinerary of choice. Since I would be pulling the Pilgrim, I wanted the route to be a reasonably direct path over fairly well marked, (hopefully) scenic roads. My concern was that a short segment of the route I wanted to take was shown as unimproved where it crossed the White Rock Wildlife Management Area. Chatting with a local who grew up in northwest Arkansas and still made trips there quite regularly, I found that my desired route was indeed gravel but was well-graded and easy to negotiate - unlike many of the ... read more

There had been so much to do in Fort Smith that we hadn’t taken a drive eastward to visit the small towns along the way and the three nearby state parks, so Plan B went into effect. Instead of going north to Fayetteville we decided to head east and spend a week in the Russellville AR area. On Tuesday, June 1, 2010, we caught US 64 eastbound and stopped in Alma (the spinach capitol of Arkansas) to see the Popeye statue. The statue is metallic and outshines the painted Popeye statue we saw in Crystal City TX in March 2010. Our next stop was Ozark AR where we followed the railroad tracks to the Ozark Area Depot Museum right on the Arkansas River and within excellent viewing range of the 1931 Ozark River Bridge.
