I woke up an hour or so earlier than usual for no apparent reason, performed my normal moving day routine and got an earlier start than usual. The drive was about eighty miles from Plymouth CT to the Seaport Campground in Old Mystic CT. After experiencing a blowout on the Pilgrim on the last leg of my journey, I decided to take the Interstates while pulling the trailer – less severe curves and less severe inclines equate to less wear and tear on the brakes and the tires. For an Interstate, my drive actually was quite pretty. Most of the adjacent terrain was tree-covered. I arrived at the campground about noon and was set up by 1 PM. By 1:30, it was drizzling and by 3 PM I’d say there had been about half an inch ... read more

I have bragged about the weather, and it finally abandoned me in Gettysburg PA and was mostly nasty the week I was in NY. It was raining when I left Middletown NY heading for Gentile's Campground in Plymouth CT and rained for about three-quarters of my drive. I also have noted that my trips from campground to campground have been uneventful. That, too, has now abandoned me. As I was stopped at a red light, the driver next to me told me a trailer tire had just blown. I got around the corner, found a place to pull over and changed the tire. Always looking for a silver lining, it didn’t rain one drop while I was changing the tire and, although the tire was trashed, the rim was fine. It must have JUST blown! Other ... read more

It was overcast as I departed Gettysburg on Tuesday, May 1, 2012 and began one of the longest relocations I have in the itinerary between Florida and northern Maine. The drive took me northeast on US 15 to Harrisburg and then north along the Susquehanna River to Millersburg. The compass heading changed to ENE as I followed US 209 to Cuddlebackville NY where I turned east on county roads to the Korn's Shawangunk campground. It was late afternoon by the time I arrived and set up the Pilgrim. This is another laid back campground. The owner said, “I’ll read the electric and we’ll settle everything before you leave.” Even my propane refill went on the tab. Other than my innate curiosity about the area and its people, there were three attractions that drew me - Washington's ... read more

Thanks to the tech support guy at Garmin, the drive to Artillery Ridge Campground in Gettysburg PA took me over the route I had imported from MapQuest. Clouds lingered, and there were some brief light sprinkles as I drove but nothing to amount to much. Set-up was uneventful, and the staff at the Artillery Ridge Campground recommended a nice restaurant – Gettysburg Eddie’s. Edward Stewart Plank (Gettysburg Eddie - 1875-1926) was the first left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball to win 200 games, subsequently first to win 300; now ranks third in all-time wins among left-handers with 326 (eleventh among all pitchers); and stands first all-time in career shutouts by a left-handed pitcher with 66. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1946. How is it that I had not heard of him? ... read more

Bah, humbug! (Informational) Irene is still giving me fits. The route I uploaded had me driving all the way to the Prince William Forest RV Campground in Dumfries VA on non-Interstate roads. The first thing Irene did was take me to an I-64 onramp. I might have to call Garmin. Tuesday, April 10, 2012 was a beautiful day, but the wind was miserable. Gusts really made me work behind the wheel – especially when an eighteen wheeler passed me. The aerodynamics on those babies is such that the Pilgrim gets shoved around quite a bit even on a calm day. I really would rather have been where the semis weren’t. The trip itself and setup were uneventful, but the wind continued to blow pretty steadily through the evening hours. Wednesday was overcast and cool so I ... read more

I laid out my route from Wanchese NC to Williamsburg VA on MapQuest and downloaded it to my Garmin so I could avoid the freeway congestion around Norfolk VA. All was going well. Although the backdrop was rural interspersed with small urban pockets, the drive on April 3, 2012 was relaxing and enjoyable. (Informational) Irene was taking me on the route I had planned. I wanted to exit from I-664 onto US 17/VA 626 and take US 17 over the James River via a bridge (where I could enjoy the skyline and the river activity) instead of using the Interstate route via a bridge/tunnel. Since I had been advised that RVs must turn off propane tanks before entering the tunnel, just as must be done on the ferries in North Carolina, I had turned off my ... read more

After enjoying Wilmington NC, I was heading to the Outer Banks for a two-week visit beginning March 20, 2012. Even though MapQuest told me the actual drive to Cedar Island NC was only 3-1/2 hours, I got a relatively early start because I wanted to stop at the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort NC. I had heard/read that this museum was the recent recipient of an anchor recovered from Blackbeard’s shipwreck Queen Anne's Revenge. Tuesday began as a hazy, foggy day but by the time I had stowed the gear and made ready to set sail, the sun was blazing. (Informational) Irene took me on a route through Wilmington NC I had not yet seen. No A/C, no heater, no radio – windows down all the way! The first half of the trip on US ... read more

Most of the drive on US 17 from Charleston SC to Wilmington NC was inland from the coast, again due to the swampy nature of the low country. The first leg of the drive was through the Francis Marion National Forest. I had considered camping at the Buck Hall Campground but had decided against so because of the distance to Charleston. I’m sure glad I did – it was about a 45 minute drive. Georgetown SC was an interesting-looking town, and the area around nearby Myrtle Beach was enticing. That area will go on my list for the future. Carolina Beach State Park, my destination, lies on a peninsula about 15 miles south of downtown Wilmington. It’s much more designed for tent camping than RVs in that there are no electric or water hook-ups – nothing ... read more

The low country of Georgia and South Carolina is replete with saltwater marches, swamps and tidal basins. These obstacles have caused nightmares for road builders over the years. Getting from point A to Point B is not going to get you there in a straight line nor to take you along the Atlantic Coast. The drive from Savannah GA to Charleston SC was uneventful – just the way I like it. (Informational) Irene, my GPS, is working splendidly. Just before I reached the SC state line, I noticed my gas tank was less than half full. That’s not panic time here along the populated east coast, but SC gas was really cheap compared to FL. I filled up the tank, emptied the bladder and stretched the legs. I’m sure glad I did – the gas went ... read more

Surprised? Well, it’s true. Larry is back on the road again. Almost all of 2011 was spent attending to appointments with the VA for one reason or another – from a general check-up physical to a stubborn kidney stone to PTSD counseling. I’m sure glad that is over – especially the kidney stone! I started a blog about St. Augustine FL some time ago and thought I had finished it; however, only when I was preparing to write this blog did I discover the errors in my ways. I had completed the text but never added the pictures and published the finished product. Oops!&%$#&. I’ll have everything you’ll ever need or want to know about St. Augustine FL to you soon as well as a summary blog about other miscellaneous excursions around central Florida. LOL The ... read more
