Our exodus from Hot Springs AR on May 25, 2010 found us heading west on scenic US 270. Logically, the further we traveled from Hot Springs the more remote became the landscape. The highway traversed rolling hills with sporadic vistas and intermittent pockets of civilization. The roadside businesses catered to the vacationer, adventurer and outdoorsman - lodges, fishing tackle shops, convenience stores, boat repair shops, restaurants and kayak rentals. Occasionally, a scenic pullout would provide a respite for the legs and a feast for the eyes. Scarce patches of wildflowers dotted the route but usually were limited to 2 or 3 varieties in any location. This type of floral display is more of what I remember of my days in the Midwest and reveals why the spectacular exhibits we saw in east Texas had such a ... read more

The drive to Hot Springs AR was convoluted by design -the road less traveled. We set out for Magnolia on US 278 and 371 via Rosston AR. Since we had seen much of Magnolia on Saturday, I pulled the Pilgrim onto the truck route around town and headed east on US 82 towards El Dorado - a town that had intrigued me since I first read about the historic downtown area. We were not disappointed. About two blocks from the historic courthouse, I found an open half block to parallel park the rig. The short walk past the well-preserved storefronts was delightful. Sculptures pay tribute to the oil heritage of the area. Sidewalk cafes blend the old with the new. Well-weathered advertisements on the sides of buildings reminisce of businesses long gone. Plaques mark the location ... read more

Well, low-keyed is an understatement for the Cajun Cowboy Motel & RV. They have Wi-Fi and satellite TV in the motel, but there are no 21st century amenities in the RV park - without an additional fee from a third party provider who is extremely proud of his exceptional service. There also are no customers in the RV park. In the four nights we were there, about 3 or 4 rigs came in for less than twelve hours - eat, sleep and be on their way. For the most part, we’ve been staying at few-frills RV parks and have learned that counting on extras like picnic tables and shade trees is presumptuous, but the Cajun Cowboy carries no frills to the extreme. Lesson learned - we now have a checklist to use before we book the ... read more

I said in my last blog that the “grand plan” for April 29, 2010 would require the cooperation of the weather. The grand plan for that Thursday was to spend half a day at NY/TX Zip Line Adventures in (where else) New York TX and half a day at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens TX. We were happy to see the blue skies, but the zip line folks weren’t excited about the wind and canceled that part of the grand plan. Oh well, I’m sure there will be other opportunities to soar with the eagles. Onward to our second stop of the day. The fisheries center was not what I had expected, but what a treat it turned out to be! I had expected a guided tour through the operations of a fish hatchery. ... read more

Monday morning, April 19, 2010, was overcast as we headed east on TX 71 to Bastrop and TX 95 to Elgin where Irene guided us onto several county roads until we reached Lexington where we caught US 77 on into Waco. The further we drove, the more the skies cleared. Different kinds of wildflowers appeared along the road, but there were few spots where I could pull over with the trailer. We hoped those flowers would present themselves again when I wasn’t towing the Pilgrim. As we got closer to the Quail Crossing RV Park, we turned onto a residential street in a small subdivision. I assured Kay that Irene either had taken us on the most direct (but not simplest) route or had taken us to the wrong destination. The RV park owner assured me ... read more

Short drive - leisurely start. “Informational Irene” (my GPS) wanted me to take I-35 to Austin. I plugged in Nixon TX as a waypoint to avoid the Interstate. We ended up going southeast on US 181 to Floresville, northeast on TX 97 and east on US 87 to Nixon. There we turned north on TX 80. A roadside display in a city park led us to the Central Texas Oil Patch Museum in Luling. The Texas travel guide identifies several oil-related museums scattered throughout eastern Texas. After having seen only one oil museum, my guess is that this one is average - worth a short stop if you’re passing through. The volunteer at the museum told us Luling is on the Texas BBQ Trail (which also includes Elgin, Lockhart and Taylor) and suggested we partake before ... read more

Beautiful wildflowers! That’s about all that can be said of our leisurely trip through the Texas countryside on the way to Von Ormy TX - just south of San Antonio. It seems like the roadside splendor intensifies every day of the trip. First the blues covered the shoulders of the roads. The low-growing yellows joined them. Then taller yellows and some whites. Kay tells me there are some reds, pinks and purples here and there. Even though I don’t see all of the hues, those that do register are truly pleasing to my eye. I remember that very little of the rural Midwest has been left to fields of “weeds” and know that the concentration of the flowering cacti in the Southwest cannot compete with the power of this panorama. Even though the timing of this ... read more

Up and at ‘em! Not really. More like a nice leisurely Wednesday morning with a short drive southeast to Del Rio TX. Our only stop along the way was in Langtry TX - home of the infamous Judge Roy Bean - the “law west of the Pecos.” Artifacts are on display both inside and outside the visitors center. The centerpiece is “The Jersey Lilly” the home, saloon and office of Roy Bean that he named in honor of Lily Langtry, a British actress with whom Bean had become smitten. Bean made several requests of her to come to Langtry - she finally did a few months after Bean’s death. The original building stands today in its original location. Worth a stop if you’re passin’ through. Our trip on into Del Rio TX was uneventful as was ... read more

Since shortly after I retired to Silver City NM in 1998, I had heard about the beauty of Big Bend National Park TX and had wanted to mosey over see for myself. It seemed only natural to make that the first stop on my great adventure. Originally, I had planned to spend a week in Fort Davis TX and then a week in Big Bend NP. When I learned there are no RV hook-ups in Big Bend NP (I have yet to acquired a generator), that idea was quickly postponed. Since I did want to get a sample of the area, I decided to take two one-day trips into the Big Bend area to satisfy my curiosity. More about that later. I also learned that spring break lasts almost the entire month of March for somebody, ... read more

North America » United States » New Mexico » Silver City September 24th 2009

Unlike the trip from Sanford to Marathon, we wanted our journey back to New Mexico to be slow-paced and relaxing. Between Florida and West Texas, we planned to avoid the Interstate system as we ventured North along the Gulf Coast. I wanted to stop in Naples to see my friend and fellow retired firefighter, Paul Pirello, who had stopped in Silver City earlier this year. We turned North on FL 997 in Homestead and headed for US 41 that would take us across the northern boundary of Everglades National Park and through Big Cypress National Preserve. Even though we made several stops and the opportunities abounded, we saw little wildlife and (most importantly) no gators. Sortta like going to New York and not seeing a taxi. Hmmmm! Campground guides and web site directions are not designed ... read more
